Control Arms

88 Comanche, 2WD. How much (if any) side to side play should there be in the upper and lower control arms? I can move mine some side to side using a large screw driver. If the bushings need replaced, do they require a press to install? Thanks.

if they are shot (and it sounds like it), I'd recommend upgrading to some WJ grand cherokee arms. :thumbsup: they are better built in ever way, old enough to be cheap at the junkyards but new enough to usually be in great shape when you find them.

The lowers will require minor grinding to fit.

and yes, I think the uppers work too.

 

lowers will need the steel inserts trimmed a bit. can be done with a grinder, sawzall or whatever.

If I keep the MJ arms, how do I get the bushings out? is this the part that is worn?

Amazon has OMIX XJ/MJ control arms with bushings for about $30/each. I picked mine up from there and they work like a charm.

forgot to show the other reason for going with the WJ arms. the bend for tire clearance. :D

If you go with WJ lower control arms you will have to grind off ~1/2 inch off the front and 1/4 inch off the back steel inserts. I just did this two weeks ago, more grinding than I expected.

I searched for a 2000 GC and came up with those numbers for the bent ones. Is yours bent like the others? It looks straight like the unwanted ones.
