Can Spell Comanche

Can Spell Comanche (2/11)

  1. where is the ground point for the instrument cluster? I found where I thought mine was and disconnected it, but the lights stayed on. my lights are coming on, but are not very bright. I thought I would try to upgrade the ground before tearing too deep into anything else.
  2. I checked the steering wheel movement with the front tires on the ground. It is the same as with them off of the ground, about 1". The tire pressures are all even at 30 psi. My wife is going to take the truck on the interstate in a couple of days. Will see if she notices any difference with new wheel bearings.
  3. I have an 88 Comanche, 2 wheel drive. When going down a straight road I have to continuously keep moving the steering wheel to keep going straight. All of the linkage, track bar, tie rod ends, steering damper seem to be tight. I checked the ball joints with a bar under the tires and there is no movement. The wheel bearings were loose and I replaced them. If I lift the front end of off the ground I can move the steering wheel about 1" before the wheels start to move. Is this ok? The tires are all worn evenly. The control arm bushings have been replaced. Does anyone have any suggestions of what else to check.
  4. I need to adjust the steering box on my 88, 2.5l Comanche. Is there an easy way to get at it? I can't seem to see a way to get at the adjusting nut.
  5. I just had the same problem with my 88. To get the nuts off of the studs I just held onto the end of the studs with a pair of vice grips while backing off the nut. Once the box was out I was able to just put some JB weld on the end of the stud that screws into the plastic heater box and screwed them back in. It worked fine.
  6. Does NAPA have an evaporator that fits into the Comanche? What is the part number? Everything that I can find is too big.
  7. Does anyone know the part number for the AC evaporator that was used for dealer installed AC systems. I am trying to replace in my 88 Comanche and am having trouble locating one that fits.
  8. I am not required to get an emissions inspection.
  9. Are there any safety issues with removing the vapor canister from my 88 4 cylinder MJ? I am trying to clean up the engine compartment and the canister takes up a lot of room and looks pretty bad. After being in there for 25 years and having no maintenance, it probably doesn't do anything any way.
  10. If I keep the MJ arms, how do I get the bushings out? is this the part that is worn?
  11. 88 Comanche, 2WD. How much (if any) side to side play should there be in the upper and lower control arms? I can move mine some side to side using a large screw driver. If the bushings need replaced, do they require a press to install? Thanks.
  12. I have an 88 mj with a 4 cylinder engine. The vent tube from the front of the valve cover to the air cleaner is in bad shape. Is this necessary? What will it hurt if i eliminate it? Can I just plug the opening in the valve cover and at the air cleaner? Thanks.
  13. I've been working on removing the dash from my 88 comanche for the past few days. I have followed the write up from the project section. I am stuck with with the defroster cowl piece. I have removed 4 screws ( three from around the vent openings and one behind the glove box door). The trim piece is loose from the passenger side to the defroster opening on the driver side. The rest won't budge. Have I missed a screw or do I need to pry a little harder? I haven't broken anything yet and don't want to start now. I am close to being able to pull the dash but need to get the trim piece off to get to the bolts behind it.
  14. Does anyone know what I should read on the D2-9 terminal of the diagnostic connector on an 88 2.5L? I am trying to figure out why I have no spark. This terminal is on the output of the ECU "timing" output. I have no spark off of the coil, and no signal to the two pins on the coil. I am running out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated. All grounds have been checked, the CPS has been changed and is in spec. My next move is to buy and replace the ECU.
