Selling Things....being Nice

Lately I've been posting many things for sale around the jeeping community, since i've bought several jeeps for parts recently.

I have had little to no issue getting parts sold for the most part, as my prices are pretty darn reasonable. For example...complete front clip with fenders, flares, header, harness, front bumper with end caps for 97+ XJ for $300.

But then I ask $150 for something like the cruise control kit (tested, good, working) for a 97-98 XJ. This includes air bag, clock spring, switches, all bolts associated, cruise servo, cable.

I think that's a pretty darn fair price considering that they have gone for much higher, used, on ebay. That said, I drop the price down to $120.

.....This is when I get a bit incredulous. I get 3 different responses on it. One wants it for $50 shipped. One for $60 plus shipping. One for $80 shipped.

This is on NAXJA. I have not responded to two of them. One had previously low-balled me on the front clip, wanting everything (shipped) for $200. LMAO. Needless to say, I was not pleasant in my response to him. The other two, I'm almost just thinking that I will prefer not to respond to, or to simply say "I'm sorry, but that's too low of an offer"

Basically, I think the low ball offers are funny, and some people are clueless. I'm curious, though, how everyone else feels about this. Do you cut ridiculously good deals for things just because people are your fellow jeepers, or are you still realistic about it? Or am I just being greedy?

Tell them to stuff it. Complete used front clip in good condition for $300 is good. Cruise control for $150 is going to be hit or miss. For someone that has access to a junk yard those parts are easy to get and cheap. Where I used to live the only good junk yard was were they pulled everything ahead of time and charged ridiculous amounts for them. So $150 for a complete cruise control setup would be a good deal.

Also, you do not need a different air bag for the cruise control setup. They are the same.

Where I live, you have to buy a complete column for half of these parts....and I've got TONS of pull it yourself junkyards around here. a whole column costs that....and then you're stuck with the extra parts. kinda cruddy.

side note for you Alexia, 97 xjs without cruise had a different airbag than with cruise...the airbag flared out to cover the thumb switch area. mid 98 they started making the cruise switch blanks, which is when they started making them the same.

Also, the switches from 97-98 will not work with 99-01, or vice-versa, because they changed the voltages/resistance required to activate them. The early switches have p/n ending in AC, whereas the lates have switches p/n ending in AD.

My 1997 air bag without cruise control has the switch blanks and is an early build for the 1997 models.

You've seen Pawn stars huh! Hit them with a lowball offer, and meet somewhere in the middle. Most people like to think they got a good deal. I wouldn't hold it against people (especialy fellow jeepers) for trying to save a few bucks. Just be polite and refuse the offer, but at least counter it with your bottom dollar.

Just my .02

My 97 donor was damaged when I bought it. The PO bought all new front end parts and an airbag to replace the blown one. The Jeep originally had cruise and while this new bag appeared to be the same shape, it did not fit. I had to buy another one from a Jeep with cruise. I still have the other one.

$150 for all that is a good deal around here. Most places would want that much just for the bag and clock spring.

i cut deals all the time for my fellow jeep club members if i have stuff to sell. i usually go to them first and if it doesnt sell then its on CL. even being nice to fellow members they try to lowball and i just be nice and say can't do it for that low. they usually pay the asking price after that. now for people on CL lowballing i tell them to get @#$%ed real quick. they either, don't reply back or come back with asking price or a damn close.

That's what early 97's came with. TJ and XJ. if yours had the blanks, someone replaced the airbag once, or it was an oddity. but I've owned 4 or 5 97's now and have a few of those airbags still floating around.

true enough. And you know pretty well by now that I'm reasonable on prices... I just don't play games with people who are going to offer me a low ball like that.

Just listed a bunch of parts for liberty KJ's. posted one pic of the silver one i'm fixing, to show the wheels I had for sale, and got a bazillion calls wanting parts off of it....when I stated that picture is for reference of the wheels only, and NOTHING off the silver one is for sale.

I haven't been to a regular junk yard in so long I can't remember when the last time was. Think it was '97 or '98. P&P is a different story. Jeff and Ed are the 2 guys behind the counter, Kenny is the yard honcho. Pete and Kris are the yard men. And they all know my name. On several occasions I've sold them parts. We have a good relationship. When I get a low ball offer it kind of depends on several factors how I respond. How long has the ad been running? How many responses have I gotten on it? How did they word, phrase the offer? My response will be a counter offer. No thanks. Get F*cked.

When I respond to a ad it depends on what their selling and How bad I want it. I always make sure I have the cash so if I make a offer and they accept it's a done deal. If it's a MJ I will get it now If it's a XJ, WJ or ZJ I will make an offer of less than they're asking but I will give them a time span of 1-2 weeks for them to sell it at their price. If they don't then call me.Biggest thing I've found is be nice, polite to people, which is extremely difficult for me,

I have 3 of my vehicles up for sale on Craigslist and I have been having a difficult time selling each.

However, early last week I had a fellow text me about my Z1000 for sale. I told him there potentially was another guy planning to come buy it on Saturday but I would certainly let him know if it fell through as he would be next in line. Saturday came and went and the potential buyer was a no-show so I let the 2nd guy know it's still available. We exchange texts and e-mails and he gets all of the details of the bike and seems satisfied with it. He shoots me an offer of $5,000. This was the same offer that the first (no-show) guy and I agreed on so I tell him that I'm good with that. He arranges to drive from Pittsburgh, PA to my place in MD (5 hour trip, one-way) the following day. That day arrives and he shows up right on time, looks the bike over and then says, "It's exactly as you described, I'll buy it...but would you accept $4500?"

At this point I figure he's just trying to see if I'm desperate - I'm not. I laugh and tell him I will only accept our previously-agreed price of $5000. He tells me he only brought $4500 with him so he can't pay 5. He shows me that he has it in cash, all 100's. I tell him I could care less if he had cash, silver or gold coins - the price is $5000 and that's where I'm at. He tries to point out flaws in the bike - all of which were stated in my ad - as to why he can't pay the original offer. I finally just got fed up, told him thanks for coming down, but please get out of my garage and enjoy your 5 hour trip back home. He must have seen the expression on my face go from, "you're messing with me, right?" to "if you don't get the F out of here I'm going to rearrange your face" because he moved out of my garage with some haste and drove off into the sunset.

I suspect he had another bike lined up in the area for $4,500 but thought if he could get me down to that price it would have been the better deal and he would have blown the other sale off. There's just no way I could see anyone driving that distance just to get shot down.

Either list it for room to go down to a price that the buyer thinks he's getting a steal or list it at a good price to start with (like it sounds like you do) and say firm, no negotiations. Then don't respond to low ball offers.

i always list what i'd like to get for something, but have another number in mind for the lowest i'll go.

if you want to buy something from me, forget i said that please.

its almost not worth it to sell stuff... its a pain. I'm selling a fourwheeler for my girlfriends father. really nice shape, low hours. I check craigslist and see what similar atvs are going for and price theirs accordingly. I get a text today saying 1900 cash. I'm asking 2700. I said it was too low. He came back telling me that he "buys and resells them to pay bills and feed youngins, so he needed a fair price" I havent heard back from him again

When I'm selling stuff, the question that just sets me off immediately is, "what's the lowest you'll take?" I hate that question; I always respond with, "what's the most you'll pay?" I'm trying to make money, so I'm not going to immediately drop to my lowest acceptable price because you're too lazy to negotiate. I list a price; either pay it or make me an offer. OK, rant over.

yeah i hate getting texts asking for a bottom dollar. COME LOOK At THE ITEM AND MAKE AN OFFER. or a lowball offer without even asking about it or coming to see it. Most of the time I will call and ask if they are firm on a price but thats it. I deal in person...
