firemansteve6921
i have a used ax 15 being shipped to me to replace the ba10-5. I'm looking for some input on what type of transmission lube i should use...brand, weight, amount of fluid? any suggestions will help whether its what not to use or what is best. thanks
MJRemi
Haynes says 7.2 pints of 75W-90 GL-5 but doesn't distinguish between BA10/5 and AX15. Just keep filling until you feel the fluid level at the fill plug. Any quality name brand should be fine.
A-man930
I've been told NOT to use GL5 as the sulfur content is no-good for the brass syncro rings... My rebuilder recommended 5w30 engine oil (synthetic.)
mvusse
5W30 or 10W30 Mobil 1. You're correct about the sulphur eating the brass synchros.

Pete M
chrysler changed the fluid specs to (I believe) 10w30 synthetic.
Jeep Driver
I've got an AX5 sitting on the bench waiting to be installed, the synchs in the one in my truck are fading. I'll likely use Lucas oil additive and then top off with a 20/50 this time around.
ComancheKid45
Ive had no trouble with Pennzoil Syncromesh in my AX15. Now it only sees around 1500 miles a year but shifts smooth and quiet ;)
whowey
chrysler changed the fluid specs to (I believe) 10w30 synthetic. That's to simplify their inventory for service departments. They don't want to carry the correct fluid for two transmissions that haven't been used in years.

FrankTheDog
I've been running Mobil 1 high mileage synthetic for 30,000 miles. It shifts and works fine no trouble.

Redline MTL and MT-90 or Amsoil MTG are all intended for transmissions that contain yellow metal parts.

xjrev10
10w30 synthetic was recommended for use in my reman np231 by the seller. Seems 10w30 Syn is the new oil for everything!
mvusse
Official fluid for the NP 231 is Dexrn/Mercon ATF. I imagine 10W30 might work, but don't know how well the oil pump handles the thicker fluid. Some people use gear oil, but the synchro for 4-hi is -you guessed it- brass.
