Just one moment of carelessness

I was trying to adjust the shift cable on the '94GC. Had swapped motor, 4.0 and transmission, 42RE and the shift lever and tran lever wasn't in sync. I had the front end up on ramps with blocks behind both rear wheels. Did the adjustment, I thought, kick the blocks out and got in and started the motor. Moved the shift to R. Nothing. Jumped out and crawled back under Jeep. The motor was shut off. While trying to loosen the cable the Jeep started rolling back, off the ramps. I was already mostly under the thing so pulled my bod under it and as it rolled down the ramps it ran over my right shoulder, pinning me to the ground. After hollering for help and not getting any I realized I was on my own. Started to just lay there and wait for help but didn't know when that would be, Besides, the ground was cold and I was getting dizzy. Don't know how in hell I did it but I grabbed the tranny cross member and was able to rock the Jeep forward enough to get free. Drove myself to the ER. No broken bones but some muscle, tendon damage.

arm is tied down so i can't move it and I'm right handed. Gonna be like this for a couple weeks, darn it. Some reason I keep thinking of '91 Comanche wearing them sandals and a bunch of us warning her of work place safety. It just takes one second of carelessness. Jim

Sorry to hear that Jim. Good thing it missed the ol' melon.

 

At least you can still use the left arm to tip back a 12 oz., reflect on the day, and tell yourself not to ever do that again.

I have thought about a vehicle falling off the jack stands many times while I am under it and it always gives me the chills. It must have been scary, good to see your not too hurt though.

I had a vehicle fall off some cheap wussy crappy old hand-me-down jackstands. right next to me. and trapped me up against the garage wall (I was standing). and just in case that wasn't scary enough, the stand punctured the gas tank. good times. good times. :ack:

 

I bought my first set of good stands the very next day and threw out the old ones. :yes:

Worked in a shop years back and a late late 60's T-Bird came in just before closing, and one mechanic put the air bumper jack under the bumper, lifted it up, got under it on his creeper, and "WHAM"! it came off the jack. Another mechanic, big guy, grabbed the front of that TBird and lifted it up and another guy pulled the mechanic out! Thankfully nothing broken, but his chest was very bruised and had muscles torn. Was off work for a while!

I think of that every time I jack a car up. I place the stands very carefully, always block the wheels, and leave the floor jack under it also if I can. May we all be careful!

My friends father owned a transmission shop, and while one of the hydraulic lifts was being fixed he was somehow crushed and killed. Working under anything that weighs as much as a car can easily go bad fast.

I've got two very goofy looking toes on my right foot for the rest of my life now, courtesy of "one moment of carelessness" and a TJ half door wearing flip-flops :thwak:

 

woulda, shoulda, coulda....stuff happens so fast it's unbelievable. It's not the obviously incredibly stupid things we consider doing and then the primordial side of our brains kicks in and prevents us from doing, it's the simple little things that almost kill us.

i had an exchange student from korea work on my old MJ with me,

we were doing to power steering fluid,

i told him to turn the steering wheel,

front was jacked up, so he threw the truck into GEAR and tried to start it!!!!!!

at the time i was laying under the truck as it came forward,

made it out just in time before the truck came crahing down :fs1:
