Found an 89 MJ in a yard about 50 miles from my house - the first I have ever found here in a yard in the metro New Orleans area. It was a maroon Pioneer model. I spent about 2 hours pulling parts from it.

 

I was excited to find it did have a D44 rear axle...but evidently it is this yard's habit to drain the fluids by punching holes in the housings. :headpop: I pulled the cover and the residual fluid drained out but one of the teeth on the gears had been broken by the tool they punched it with.

 

I did not have anything to write with so I took pictures of the VIN...they did not come out.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Tailgate was missing, but I got the tail lights, the cargo light and switch, the emergency brake assembly, the rear flares, the TPS and the IAC, the rear bumper license lights and harness, and the fuel pump and sender. I also got the carpet panel behind the seat, which is maroon. Some of these items will be for sale at a later date (I'll post a different thread).

 

I need to go back and get the front and rear bumpers and header panel. If I can get there before they cruch it, I'll write down the VIN as well.

I still get soo upset when I see a great looking MJ like that in a JY. I would love to have that truck and put it back together! Good find though..

if it was cheap enough, I'd still grab that 44. heck, depending on how much tooth was gone, it's still usable as-is. :thumbsup:

My son, with the eagle eyes, was able to make out the VIN on the door.

 

1JT7PT36LLKL446902

 

It translates to:

1 - US

J - Jeep

7 - Truck

P - Not found, but is the GVWR

T - Cherokee 2WD (?)

3 - Pioneer

6 - Not found, but body style

L - 4.0 liter I6

L - Check digit

K - 1989

L - Toledo Ohio Plant 1

446902 - Sequence number

how bad was the punch in the housing? it might be repairable, and the damaged gear is just a good excuse to to change the ratio.

That's if you pay somebody to do it. I took it upon myself to learn how to do it.

 

Guesstimate for me to do it- $250 to $300.

 

Definitely worth learning to do. For me anyways.

 

I'd use the broken tooth as an excuse to lowball the JY owner.

 

A MJ 44 is still a 44, broke tooth or not.

yes, $600+ would be right for a shop, but there's always learn to do it yourself or pay a mechanic for some side work. i've been known to do side work for friends for much cheaper than a shop, and plenty of other mechanics do, too. it all depends on how bad the axle is, who would get it, and how much it costs as is.

I'd pay good money for that cargo light and the accompanying switch for it!!!! PM me if you get your hands on that and want to sell it!

If it's just a chip in the outer edge of the ring gear, I'd think you could run it with no problems. The pinion rides on the very center of the ring gear face. Be worth a try.

damn i would of tried to buy the whole thing! underside looks rust free and for the most part dent free too. itd be a good "back burner" project

i hope you bought a "big @$$ beer" on the street. can't remember how much but it was just funny to walk around with. mid-town is really where Memphis is. all sorts of people, all sorts of food. downtown is just for the tourists and 1AM house parties on the river. just let me know next time image_209027.gif
