knever3
I know this topic has been around before, but I really want a line-x bed liner, but I stopped by today (Bay City, MI) and they quoted me $500! I think they are crazy for a small bed like the Comanche. What do they charge for a full size bed, $800? I am going to call Mount Pleasant to see if they are any cheaper because I don't think that is a satisfactory price. I am willing to pay $350 for it or even 4, but not 500. Has anyone had a line-x bedliner put in and how much? Thanks
M1A1TankerTom
I got my full size dodge ram done for 350. I agree that the place that quoted you is waaaaaay too much!
89eliminator
were they including over the rails too? it cost me $400 even for under the rails.
dasbrick
I'm just gonna use the one from Meijer. It's like 59.99 if i remember right. Enoguh for a full size truck bed. Should be enough for an over the rail.
socal1200r
I had one done years ago in a Ford Ranger I used to have, cost about $500 for over the rails. I got a gallon of a roll-on bedliner to do the bed in the Comanche, and it's no where near as good as a spray-in liner. 'Course the roll-on stuff cost like $50, with roller and brushes extra, which is a tenth of what a spray-in liner would run. But depending on how you plan on using your truck, the spray-in liner is a good investment. For example, I wouldn't be comfortable with someone tossing $25 worth of wood into the back of the MJ with the roll-on stuff, but wouldn't have any problems if it was a spray-in liner. You get what you pay for...
comanche09
I did the Herculiner DIY roll-on liner to my MJ. I did alot of research, and from what I read it was the best choice out of the DIY types. I'm not at the point in my resto to drop that kind of money on a coating. NONE of the DIY products compare to Line-X or Rhinoliner. It's true about this, you get what you pay for. That said, I'm ok with the Herculiners performance as I was not expecting it to perform like the spray in liners. It holds up to wood/gravel very well. However heavy steel (ie a rear axle in the bed), not so much. It scratched right through the Herculiner to the metal. To be fair, the axle also dented the bed a little. I wonder how the Line-x would hold up to that?
johnnyc
I'm not at the point in my resto to drop that kind of money on a coating. I'm with you there. I had originally wanted to get my bed Line-Xed and still may do so some time in the future. But for now, my budget said Duplicolor. I used two cans of their spray-on bedliner. I wasn't expecting great results, but I was still pleasantly surprised. It looks a lot better than it did before, and it has held up pretty well, even after throwing stuff in the bed to take to the scrap yard. There are a few scratches that need to be touched up, but that's about it. I'm not saying that my method is the best. Clearly, it is not. But for someone on a tight budget, it is an option. Cost me about $10. Of course, good prep work is the key to making the stuff stick. I just washed the bed and sanded it really good.
CRF136N
http://www.grizzlygrip.com I will use this product from now on. I did 3 coats in the bed of my MJ using an undercoating spray gun (actually, I think I wound up getting a dupli-color bed liner spray gun, but more or less the same thing) it is unbelievably durable and chemical resistant. Very good quality product. It can also be rolled on. What sold me on it, aside from a fellow CC members recommendation was the fact this product is used by reputable companies not only for bedliners, but also floor coatings. I'll put it this way, I rescently loaded both my front and rear axles into and out of the bed of my MJ by myself, and they are quite heavy (140-150lbs...?) with jagged/sharp edges...I had to do it one end at a time, got one side on the tailgate, then picked up the other end and walked/slid the axles into the truck...dragging it along the bedliner...only one tiny sliver shaped scar, a couple mm's wide by about an inch long...nothing a quick dab of touch-up product won't fix. Otherwise my dirtbikes are always leaking trans oil and I'm always spilling gas on it while filling them up, its not effected. Just my .02 cents ;) Oh ya, I got the kit for the 8' bed, which came with 2 gals...but I only used 1gal with 3 coats, and it cost somewhere around $120 -James
Rymanrph
I've heard good things about U-pol Raptor. That's what I'm going to try on my TJ tub when it gets warmer.
codybutz
For what its worth, I agree with the rest of these guys. I've had a couple trucks LINE-X 'd and I feel they come out looking the best. The DIY 'ers just never result in the same quality at the end. The rhino liner and the rest or the spray on bed liners look OK and do the job, but in the long run I feel its the LINE-X that is the best. Just like with any body work, its all in the prep. The last truck I had and also what I plan to do with the MJ, is If you do all the sanding and prep, and all they have to do is just spray the truck they will cut you some off the price. Just my .02 cents.
streetjeep2.5
Grizzlygrip comes in colors. What about the others? I would like to keep a kind of white in my white bed.
M1A1TankerTom
I have also heard good things about DuraBak, comes in a butt load of colors as well. check it out: http://www.nonslipcoating.com/
whowey
It scratched right through the Herculiner to the metal. To be fair, the axle also dented the bed a little. I wonder how the Line-x would hold up to that? Line-x and Rhino hold up better to steel hitting them.. but they are not impenetrable. The spray in ones that end up soft are almost useless against steel. We used to get spray in liners on the trucks at work to try and keep the beds in better shape... But day after day of steel parts, pallets, boxes, etc. being drug around and sliding and eventually they all fall to pieces.
jteckmann
I don't have any personal experience with Line-X. I always hear it's the best, and I've wanted to get it done, but like you, I always get outrageous quotes for the cost. I have a longbed, and I've been quoted upwards of $550-$650 for an over the rail job. Even visited a guy who works out of his garage and was assured he was the cheapest around, and he was asking $500. This was even after I said I'd bring in the truck fully sanded & prepped. I just can't stomach spending almost as much on the bedliner as I spent to buy the whole truck. I wound up going the Herculiner route. Researched it a lot, and of all the more reasonably priced DIY options, seemed to have a lot of good reviews. I bought 2 gallons, and that was enough to coat my entire bed, over the rails, the inside & outside of the tailgate, the rocker panels, and the end of the bed sides around the taillights (those were the areas where my paint/body was in the worst shape, so the Herculiner route was cheaper than a paint job, and it masks the small dents fairly well). Then I bought a couple more quarts and did the floor of the cab. So I spent about half the price ($275) to do almost the entire truck as what Line-X wanted for just the bed. Sanding & prep is the key to getting any DIY liner to hold up well. And I used a rust inhibitor on the problem spots then rattle-canned on a base layer of Rustoleum primer before rolling on the Herculiner. I've been happy with it so far. The bed takes a lot of abuse, hauling lumber, landscaping supplies, rock, etc. I've spilled gas, oil, and paint on it, and it's cleaned up well. Like was said, the liners trap dirt, and it's next to impossible to ever get them as clean looking as when they were first applied. But on the rare occasions when I do wash my truck, I've taken a pressure washer to the liner and cleaned it up fairly well. I cut drain holes in the floor of the cab, so I can clean that up with the hose too. The only thing that's damaged the Herculiner so far has been sharp metal objects that have gouged it. But I keep a spare quart handy, and you can just touch it up with a brush, and it looks/works as good as new. I know Herculiner comes in some different colors - black, gray, red and white - but you usually just find the black on the shelf at the store. I think you need to order the other colors through their website. Here's a quick pic I snapped with my cell phone (my old tailgate got bashed in good, so I found a junkyard replacement, and haven't had a chance to reapply the liner to it yet):
