Why you can't build it strong enough

The link to this clip was sent to me by a friend in Greece.

 

 

Looks to me like they managed to rip the front axle completely out, and the right front wheel seems to have ended up basically under the driver's seat. The obvious lesson here is, if you're going to build it for "real" off-road use, be sure you do it right because Mickey Mouse builds won't get you home.

Same thing happened at JeepSkool a while back. but using winches, and losing the rear axle instead of the front.

 

 

They tried to pull him forward first, but it wouldn't budge. Then backwards he broke the rear axle control arms.

The first was definitely poor extraction technique. It was also a hot dog who got into something his vehicle couldn't handle. What I can't figure out is, with all the people standing around watching, why nobody had a winch.

 

Unfortunately, there are no views showing what was straight ahead or straight behind. Pretty obviously, they should have been doing a straight pull rather than a severe side-angle pull. But ... too late now.

Is it just me or did these guys have no clue what they are doing? Then the icing at the end, "I don't want 'em to mess this truck up." :grrrr:

I have seen that first one a few times. Terrible extraction technique. Should have winched him straight backwards, IMHO. Probably did not want to get the fancy white truck dirty though.

 

Any idea if the second guy had factory control arms? I would tend to guess 'yes' since it looks like he has a 3" spacer lift on the front with the stock swaybar links still connected. The look on that guy's face is priceless. Looked like a nice Jeep :nuts:

Anybody ever hear of a "Shovel"? Properly manipulated they can be quite usefull in removing earthen obstructions in the path of a vehicle.

Anybody ever hear of a "Sheepherders jack"? Called HiLift in some parts. They can kill or miam ya. They can also help when properly utilized.

Anybody ever hear of common sense? sometimes reffered to as brains, smarts.

I've always maintained' ANYTHING CAN BE BROKE!!!!An idiot seems to be able to do it faster and quicker than anybody else. :redX:

Sure hope congress doesn't hear about this. The last thing we need is another Gov agency enforcing gov mandated rules on the extraction of personal transportation devices. There must be a good acronym for that. Just can't think of one now.

Lousy rotten technique displayed in both instances. The owners got exactly what they asked for by not controlled the recovery of their own Jeeps.

 

A few minutes of shovel work would have done wonders in both cases... A special dose of foolishness for the Wrongler owner.... His winch cable isn't the same color as the mud...obviously it wasn't pulled out.....

as for the Ford I'm am sure transmission failure is right around the corner, it's been my EXP, that a Ford auto trans only last about 40-60K miles . . .

 

Normally right after such an aggressive stunt is when it start's shifting funny then within 6-9 month it smokes all the forward gears out of it.

 

I only buy Fords with manual transmission's from now on, even tho i try to avoid that brand all together as they cost to much to fix.

Now as for the pulling, once the jeep came up out the whole, before the axle broke would have rehooked to the rear corner that was in the air, and pulled him backward . . .

I've never taken a physics class. Those laws never change period. Seems to me a wrecker with a higher angle of pull would have gotten either vehicle out a whole heck of a lot easier, not to mention cheaper. Well thought out use of a winch and some hand tools could have done the same. Physics have always been an integral part of my life, from 20+ years in construction, to changing the tranny in my truck. I always keep in my mind to work smarter, not harder. Both cases were prime examples of working harder (brute force), definitely not smarter.

i've seen the original video before, i at first thought they were using the axle as a recovery point but they didn't upon further inspection. poor technique, the icing on the cake for me is the idiot standing on the bumper while its being pulled. some people have no clue what they're doing, thas what gives our lifestyle/hobby a bad name.

I doubt that Fords tranny was stock the engine sure wasnt,build them right and you can tractor pull with them.

 

 

IMHO the ZF manuals behind the diesel arent any stronger then the auto,the old 5spd does seem to be a little better then the 6spds though

I was comparing my experiences personally and the Granny 4spd in my 77' F350 is way stronger then the E40D my 95' F-150 had i smoked 3 of them in 155K miles and that truck never towed anything, the auto trans in the 03' F-350SD 5.4L which i feel is also an E40D but some say its not either way smoked 2 of them in 115K miles n that truck only tows a skid loader all summer n plowed snow all winter.

 

The 1977 Ford F-350 dumper is pushing 300K miles and smoked 1 clutch at 190K miles, it towed 18K-lb's all summer long and used to plow snow in the winter as well . . . I retired 77' F350 from plowing when i got the 03' F350 then a few summers later i retired the 77' to my personal fleet of collector truck's . . .Run's flawlessly still tons of power . . .

 

it is 1 of very few Ford's my AMC/GMC loving @zz likes . . .

the old trannies do seem to handle the abuse . i had a 3spd or "three on the tree" in a 74 f250 that could not be killed.

 

the autos were not bad either I had a C6 with heavy duty packs in a 83 F250 that was pretty bullet proof.

 

 

you must be hard on transmissions and/or you were getting poor replacement trannies. they should live longer then that.
