what did you do to your MJ today?

I mocked up some bumper ideas on paper today between work orders. I think I have come up with a good working plan. No pics as I haven't done anything.

I stopped at the steel store and picked up the stock for my bumpers... :brows: :brows: I got 2x4, 2x3, 2x2, all .125 thick along with a couple 10''X24" scraps of diamond plate.

Once home, I clamped some scraps together for a look at the actual idea. I haven't seen anything exactly like my idea, but I think it looks good.

Fixed!

Well, kinda.

No pictures as I'm a little embarrassed by the look of the welds.

And I stripped the threads in one of the bolt holes in the steering box! :fs1:

Now I have to drill it out, tap it, and put a 1/2" bolt in. The stock bolts are 7/16".

Found out tomorrow I'm working a normal day, no 40 hour limit yet this week. Then I just have enough time for supper before my evening job at the drive-in. Can probably get out of there around 10:00 pm or so, at which time I still have to pack up the truck, and be up at 6 in the morning to have breakfast, shower and be on my way to JeepSkool for a weekend of camping and wheeling.

Looks are the icing, as long as you have good penetration you will be fine. Like a very good friend of mine says, a good grinder makes most people good welders. :shake: :brows:

BTW, IIRC the box bolts are bigger than 1/2". Use grade 8 and don't go any longer then you need to.

Good luck camping/wheeling!!!

The stock bolts are too short now, so I went to the hardware store to get longer ones. To be sure I took one of the old ones with me. a 7/16"-14 nut fits on them perfectly, so they are 7/16"(x4). 4.5" long bolts would be perfect, but they didn't have any, so I had to get 7/16x5". The threaded part of the bolts is just barely long enough.

This afternoon I'm going to try to make it to Ziegler's bolt and nut house to get a 1/2" bolt and a 1/2" tap. Better selection than Fastenall. If they don't have 1/2x4.5", it's doesn't exist, meaning I have to again go with 5".

Tapped stripped steering box hole for 1/2" bolt. Installed 1/2x4.5" bolt.

Drill 1/2" hole in center of roof. Installed CB antenna. Tuned antenna. SWR is now 1.9; best mounted on fender was 2.3. 5/8 wave antenna gives 1.2, but at 10 feet it's a little long... My 3' antenna looks too long on the roof. Need to get a 2'.

Hooked up radio antenna.

I made my front bumper this AM. Came out rite nice, if I do say so myself.... :clapping: :rotfl2: :shake:

I started with a stick 5ft of 2x2 and added two pieces of 2x3 on top, for the top sides. Then decided I didn't like the flat/square front. So I cut an angle on it so the 2x3 paralleled the grill lines. I left it long enough to bisect another short piece of 2x2 for each side.

Here is a couple mock up shots.

I tacked it in position and removed it to the welding bench for all welding. I then cut caps for the open ends and welded them in and ground flush.

Then I put it back on and welded it on to the Back bone winch mount.

I like the end result. now on to the rear bumper side protection...

Replacing my bed.. got so beat up . now is a good time to repaint the whole truck. will be doing that over the next few weeks. I did sand the frame and primed and painted it while the bed was off. Like that totally solid rust free bed..yes

I was still on a roll from yesterday... SO. I started on the rear bumper side protection. I got the first side done.

Then I shot it with a quick coat of primer and a final coat of Rustoleum Hammered black top coat.

Let it loose on some LEGAL trails on 1500 acres of private property. Got stuck in mud twice, clearanced driver side front fender a bit with the tire, but didn't break anything (that I know of so far).

Wow?! How did you accomplish that? Just put insurance on mine and it is costing an extra $75 a month. Honestly has me thinking if it is worth it to have third vehicle.

Got mostly done replacing a bad lower ball joint. After that's finished I will convert front passenger axle to single piece shaft, and am thinking about cross over steering. Either see if I can make a WJ factory set up work, or something after market.

I drove it with the bent front axle some more.

then went to work.

then drove it some more.

won't be working on anything for a few weeks. need to finish packing the wheel bearings on the tow dolly and get the straps out for measurements and modifications for new straps that disconnect and get stored out of the weather, and the 3800 needs to get moved in which means cleaning the shop.
