  1. Yeah Don - that was the joke I was trying to get across. Probably could've used a better smiley. :D
  2. I wish we had junkyards like that here. The only one with more than 3 Jeeps in my town wanted $500 for rear ends left outside in a pile, although I certainly don't envy your rust :D Just noticed there were XJs with that rare 21 slot grille and fluid sentinel! Cool (if blingy and worthless respectively) stuff.
  3. Filled in the poll and I see you've added me to the maps. Great to see someone taking the initiative here!
  4. Woops, just noticed you have an '86... :thwak:
  5. Now that is cool.
  6. Next weekend is (as far as I know today) free for me. Wouldn't mind heading over then. Page 5 and we still haven't kept a plan :group beer:
  7. Unless it makes the trans start acting strange, I wouldn't worry about it. I've noticed this behavior (although it isn't a huge difference, it never really seems to come back to the exact same spot) on mine and it shifts like it should. The system is supposed to adjust the cable where it needs to be, but I doubt that there is or ever was a huge amount of precision in the adjuster.
  8. I'm in Cookeville TN and sometimes Columbia on weekends. I have a pretty busy week usually, so it would need to be a weekend thing unless we could plan it during the summer. Unless something really changes in the mean time, my truck has no place in a "wheeling park", but I could ride with someone I suppose. I'd be willing to drive ~250 miles, maybe more.
  9. Yeah, the biggest problem is that everyone is so far apart. We're a diverse group, but it makes really hard to organize in person. There's a lot of us in the TN area, but we haven't been able to find a time that works for everyone :( I wouldn't mind a longish drive if it was certain that it was going to happen and that there would be a good turnout.
  10. :D
  11. :agree: The MJ looks good with a roll bar, but only some roll bars look good with the MJ Edit: It kind of looks like one of those modular aftermarket roll bars. If it is, you might be able to get different "legs" for it that don't go all the way to the ends of the wheel wells. Never much been a fan of that style myself. Of course, then you'd have even more holes in the bed.

  13. Alright, it's been a few weeks. Time for a small update. Here's my observations so far: - You can fit more stuff behind the seat of an MJ than you might think, including a small TV and a couple of suitcases. I found this out when my buddy's basketcase '91 Chevy ate its distributor on the side of I-40 and we had to put 2 trucks worth of stuff in mine. :laughin: - I'm 95.9% sure that my exhaust manifold is cracked - considering that I believe it's the original one and the truck has almost 154k on it now, I'd say it's lived well past its service life, given the 4.0's hunger for exhaust parts (wow, that was a long sentence). The symptom? A noise that sounds almost exactly like a stuck lifter with the windows rolled up, but I can hear a distinct "puff" noise with windows down. It also seems to be sensitive to throttle position in some way. After a few minutes, it goes away. - I'd like to replace the exhaust system anyway. The odd combination of stock and el cheapo replacement parts I currently have is... bad. Everything but the cat (which is a new el cheapo replacement) and possibly the tailpipe (el cheapo replacement, replaced in 2002 with the el cheapo muffler that's currently rattling itself to death and probably restricting exhaust flow in some way) is on borrowed time. I hate loud exhausts, but the current setup is pretty toneless to say the least. - It runs like a charm at interstate speeds. Wind noise is quite high, so some sound padding will be added (something I've wanted to do anyway) The ride isn't bad but rough enough to make sure you don't fall asleep. The alignment I got in August made the steering feel pretty much spot-on. I adjusted the gearbox so it has the slightest bit of play, barely enough to notice. - The next big project will be a re-sealing of the engine. As I've said before, this truck currently has or has had all of the typical 4.0 leaks. Currently, it leaks from the rear main seal (VC gasket and oil filter adapter are both dry and have been replaced recently), front main seal, the oil pan drain plug, and I believe the oil pan gasket. I believe the threads on the pan for the drain plug are damaged as well. - My el cheapo CCV tube at the side of the airbox has split open. Easy fix, and it wasn't the right part anyway. - I have very little free time during the week. I spend nearly 21 hours in a classroom or walking towards another classroom, 4 hours tutoring math, and quite a bit more studying or doing homework every week. The truck isn't my first priority right now, to say the least.
  14. Also - I think if you got the 4.0, you had to have power steering.
  15. CC is awesome!
  16. That's a fawty-faw alright. This looks like a great truck to start out with. I've always liked the Chiefs - there's something very '80s about that style. You seem like you're doing a good job with this.

    :agree:
  18. The ZJ steering box has a "quicker" ratio (12.7 for the ZJ vs 14.0 for the MJ - I think.) which means that the wheels turn more for a certain amount of steering wheel movement. I've heard it makes the truck feel more nimble on the road. I plan to do it myself eventually. I believe hornbrod has done it on his truck - he'll know the details.
  19. The sway bar will provide a nice improvement in cornering (if that's a desirable trait to you. Big sway bars will hurt front suspension flex, but you can always disconnect it) if and only if the new sway bar is thicker. I'm pretty sure V8 ZJs got 26mm bars at least, and some had 28mm bars. The standard for MJs and XJs is 24mm IIRC. Obviously the bigger one will reduce body roll the most. As with anything, the only way to be sure is to measure it yourself. If you switch sway bars you'll need matching bushings as well. Poly bushings will further reduce body roll, since they aren't soft like rubber.
  20. :agree: 91s are few and far between, and mostly free of electrical issues and little niggling problems. If it's a 4.0 then it has an AX-15, if it's a 2.5 then it has the AX-5. 99% chance of it having an open D35 in the rear. All '91 Comanches were running Mopar electronics. Not for no reason are the 91s and 92s (there are very few differences between 91 and 92) considered the best years. They seem to be beginning to go up in value, also.
  21. Side question, sorry if it's a bother to anyone: does the OBD1 CEL ever come on by itself? I've had plenty of stuff go on that I'd think would trigger a CEL (I've also pulled a number of codes with the key trick) but it's never come on except for during a key cycle. A year or so back my truck cut off with no real pattern to it similar to what you're describing (seemed to only do it after warming up, always shut off smoothly and would restart right away). Ended up being the ignition coil. My symptoms were a little different but strikingly similar. I never smelled fuel, for instance. It's also pretty well reported that a CPS can fail only when hot, although I don't imagine that would let you start it up again right away. When both of my CPSes failed, the truck would restart after the engine had cooled down (and promptly stall again once warmed up) although the 4.0 CPS seems like it can fail in an amazing number of different ways. When you tried to restart it in neutral, was it turning over? My experience is that the NSS will stop it from even turning over. The CPS and sync sensor (some call it a "pickup coil") are two other logical suspects.
  22. Drove it 130 miles home from Cookeville last night. It was perfectly happy buzzing along at 75 the whole time
  23. Let me be another one to chime in about the quality of these headliners. I've had mine since 2012 and it's pretty much perfect. Looks exactly like the old saggy one did minus the oldness and saggy-ness. Here's mine:
  24. I'm assuming you're talking about transfer cases and axles, so here we go. The factory transmission in your truck is the Peugeot BA-10/5, a french transmission not known for strength but many have acheived some very high mileages. The AX-15, a much better transmission, came to be in mid 1989. Your truck is an '88 so it could have one of two transfer cases: The New Process models 231 or 242. The 242 has the option for full-time 4WD, the 231 does not. The front axle on a stock Comanche is always a Dana 30 with an open differential. It may have either a Dana 35 (oval shaped cover) or Dana 44 (angular cover) rear axles with either open or limited-slip differentials. The D35 is known for being very weak for offroading duty, but may be kept depending on what tires you plan on using. The Chrysler 8.25 and Ford 8.8 are frequently swapped in place of a Dana 35 that has failed. You don't have a Dana 60. My opinion? Start simple, and make sure it's mechanically reliable before worrying about cosmetics.
