Serious changes a-happenin' at the Yellaheep ranch....
johnj92131 replied to yellaheep's topic in The Pub
Spent 2 hours Monday at the Ferrari Museum. Wish I had recorded the JBL sound track of a Ferri Formula 1 car running a race. Man do they SCREAM!! -
Did anyone here get this LundVisor? It is sold now. Just wondering.

At least one member has a stock 18 gal tank on the passenger side. I have looked at doing a second tank for the last 8 or 9 years. But just can not see the need for it based on how I use the truck. Even on 2 coast to coast and back trips last summer, my 23 gallon tank was all I needed.

How to find out which model I have
johnj92131 replied to Manche757's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
$2500 sounds reasonable for a decent old truck that runs decent. You could do far worse IMHO. Also like fact it is H.O. rather than Renix. Just more parts for H.O. -
Interesting 4 door Comanche ...
johnj92131 replied to Strokermjcomanche's topic in Craigslist/eBay... i.e. Not Your Stuff
98 Dakota standard cab wheelbase = 111.9" Stretched cab = 131" wheelbase Think an extended cab Comanche would need a wheelbase longer than 120"? -
There is an old saying:. A fool and his money are soon parted.
-
What instrument cluster is in your truck? A full 99 cluster and OBD II harness?
-
The Comanche is just metal. Remember that. Take care of yourself and others first. Don't worry about the truck, except if it is your transportation to safety. Know your evacuation route. That is 2nd most important thing. Above is what I learned in 2003 massive fire here in San Diego CA. Killed 15 people who waited too long to evacuate. Don't wait to evacuate.

I would be very careful about dealing with the insurance company. I "thought" I had a written agreement with Liberty Mutual to accept payment only IF title was not branded. They reported it as totaled anyway, claiming state law made them do it. But, I got enough $$ to properly fix and repaint the truck. Either way, life is a crap shoot.

X 2 what is the problem with power windows??

NOS Air Dam with Tow Hooks
johnj92131 replied to HOrnbrod's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Kind o look like something for an electrical box? While I like the look of the tow hooks, I do wonder about their actual strength and utility. I have a front mounted Drawtite hitch. It has a pair of loops welded on from factory with a 300 pound pull rating. Tink the only use I ever found was to pull some small trees I had cut down into an easier place to trash them. Have used the front hitch a couple of times to move a trailer in tight spots. -
Truck is repairable. Mine was worse and got fixed very well. Still sucks to come out and find stuff like this. It will take some time to find a shop interested in actually fixing the truck for a fair price. Most shops want to do just insurance jobs.

First, sorry you lost the phone. BUT, great find on the parts yard! Verizon customer service is terrible. I hate them for at least half a dozen reasons.
-
Do not skip the machine shop!! Do a valve job and have the head surfaced. It is not fun to do it again, just because you tried to take shortcuts and save a couple of bucks.

There is a lesson here for me. When I buy an Engine hoist - Get the BIG one!
-
Good use for the hoist! Sure beats a pick/shovel and pry bar/digging bar.

That's a gross understatement. How's the Wildernest look? It looked better than expected in the pictures I did get. Have not even opened it up since I got it. It is on the pad in the back yard, Won't get around to using it for quiet a while. One thing I did notice is that the main part of the shell does not quite match the cab profile of the Comanche. It is a couple of inch short at the top and just a bit narrower at the top of the cab. Found a serial number on the shell but no model number. Length of the shell is an exact match for the bed as is the width. Need to get some information/pictures from others on the club with a Wildernest. Know Rob has one and "think" neohic has/had one. But he has been busy with his move to Colorado. My goal with the diesel MJ and the Wildernest camper is a trip to Alaska along the Alaska Highway. Wanted to do that trip since I was in high school, so maybe next summer everything will be set to go.

Saw this truck last week for a few minutes. Looks good, but had no mufflers. So was loud. Nice looking engine, have to say. Runs about 1750 rpm at 70mph. Should be great on the highway. Lots of potential here.

No kidding. Started the journey at 218001 miles. Back home at 226750 or so. This is my second transcontinental trip of the summer in the Comanche. First was San Diego to Boston and back. Never expected to be driving the truck this much. Not too bad for a 25 year old truck

might be a very newbie question
johnj92131 replied to madog7200's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have a set of NOS tail lights, but the price is $500+ shipping. And your first born child. Seriously, you can do much better as others have said. And if you want to spend 500 just buy my NOS lights -
After I flew back to Chicago and picked up my 91 Comanche. I went on to the TDI Club's annual convention in Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin. While there I got a line on a 98 TDI engine at the bargain price of $250. Best news was it was only an hour away from me. So Sunday I made a 3 hour side trip and purchased the engine. Here it is in the back of the Comanche: Turns out this is more than just an engine - it is the complete front drive power train. Includes transmission, radiator, engine computer, dash panel, accelerator peddle, battery terminals. Even includes a start switch to test run the engine on the pallet. Just add battery, fuel and ear plugs (no Muffler). So this was delivered to the shop that is doing the engine transplant on Monday (Labor Day). Then I was off to Charlotte, NC to pick up a 2 wheel drive AX-15 transmission from Rymanrph - link: http://comancheclub.com/topic/23788-ax-15-2wd-nc/ From Charlotte it was off to Savannah, Ga to pick up a Wildernest Camper shell that is destined for the 86 diesel MJ. The Wildernest made the journey home to San Diego. I left Savannah at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time on Wednesday and pulled into my driveway at 2:00 a.m. Friday morning. Only managed a couple of cat naps in rest areas along the way.

Good advice that. I'm definitely an offender, especially when just running errands around town. This will change now. Were you fairly close to home when this happened Dirty? I think the statistic is that 75% of all fatal accidents happen within 25 miles of home. Had an uncle killed, just running errands in downtown Los Angeles, many, many years ago (1968). Not using seat belt, ejected from truck, fractured skull when head hit the blacktop. Cops estimate speed at 25 mph. So, use the darn seatbelts!!! Dirty, glad you are reasonably OK. The truck is just metal that can be replaced. Really good word on the seat belts. Hope others listen to this and use the belts. JJ

I have an NOS set sitting on the shelf. I would like to get back what I have in them - $500. Yes, it is steep. Pick a Part is your best option, when you run across a Comanche.
