Renix Engine Monitor scan tool
johnj92131 replied to 87MJTIM's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
On the highway at 60-65 mph you should be able to get 23/24 mpg. First thing to check is you tires - make sure you have 32-35 psi all the way around. At that 60-65 mph my H.O./AW4 can get 23/24 if I keep the speed closer to 55/60 - I can manage 26 mpg. The Renix should be a bit better. -
Minuit, The company I worked for the last 20+ years of my working life is/was a provider of distributed controls systems world wide to the power industry (including nuclear) and municipal waste water systems. We used a good number of relay panels as parts of the control system. All of these relay panels were mounted vertically, with the relays being mounted "on their side", as I think you have described it. We had no issues world wide. But the equipment was always enclosed in it's own cabinet.

That is bazaar. Have to wonder how he new the color of the car did not match the registration before he pulled you over? Guess he ran your plate for some reason and the color mismatch was his weak excuse for probable cause.

88 MJ manual with radiator for automatic?
johnj92131 replied to omega_rugal's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Using the same part, instead of 2 (or more) slightly different parts solves a whole lot of problems. Many companies do this all the time. First, it cuts down on expensive set up time for each (slightly) different part. Second, it reduces inventory requirements. Third, it reduces production costs by allowing longer (less expensive) production runs for parts. All these things make it easier and less expensive to support an older, out of production car/truck for its full life cycle. -
snow plow hitch/receiver hitch?
johnj92131 replied to dpoly's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Have you ever used it John? Yes, perhaps 3 times! Maybe twice to put a trailer in a tight spot because I don't to a great job of backing up into tight spots. The other time would be pulling a small downed bush/tree - just because I was too lazy to turn the truck around! In total, I spent more time just bolting it on than I have ever used it. "Maybe", somebody might be able to use it as a temporary winch mount? -
Rebuilding the front end
johnj92131 replied to That_Creepy_Guy_In_The_MJ's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Do make sure you use quality parts like the Spicer parts mentioned above. No fun to have to do the job again in a year because you saved $10 or $20 on cheap, poor quality parts. With Rock Auto, you at least know what brand name parts you are buying. Not sure that is the case with J.C. Whitney - it has been many years since I purchased anything there. -

snow plow hitch/receiver hitch?
johnj92131 replied to dpoly's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Search Ebay for a "Comanche trailer hitch" and you will find several from either Curt or Drawtite. Prices range from $107 to $186 including free shipping. Also check Amazon, especially if you have Amazon Prime. Curt front hitch is $101.24 with free shipping Drawtite 65009 is $106.49 with free shipping. I have the Draw-tite hitch on mine for the last 6 years. -
Two words: "Lucas Flamethrower" Next best thing to 747 landing lights. I remember those!

Power Door Lock Switches (Fixed)
johnj92131 replied to Minuit's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Did this to my 91 more than 5 years ago when somebody hit the truck. Since I had to fix 1 door, I just purchased a pair of doors from a Cherokee with the power windows and locks. Doors also came with the interior door panels in the correct gray color. I paid $200 for both doors. Then I just had to come up with the cross body harness. Don has a simple wire diagram. Frankly, I have gotten used having them in all my cars. Minuit: Very nice job to describe the issue and the what to do for installing the power door locks/windows. I need to look in the DIY section to see if their is a write up on installing the power windows and locks. If there is, then this thread should be linked to that DIY. -
I just posted this link last night in the Headlights thread: http://www.danielste...ays/relays.html You will find a complete package of information on the how and why of the light relays. Should answer all your questions and a few more.
-
Just do the headlight relay harness first. That alone will improve any headlights by delivering full battery/alternator voltage directly to your headlights. It is simple in concept and about as cheap as anything to improve your lights. This site is a very good one for lighting information: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech/relays/relays.html

Makes sense, since Fiat owns Ferrari. My only question is: Where can I get some of that "stuff" your smoking in that emoticon?

That is what I thought. I use Haggerty to insure my 69 Corvair Convertible with 24K original miles. Cost me about $240 for 20K coverage with no miles limitation. The same pleasure use restriction. Provided a ton of pictures also prior to coverage.

Eagle, I don't know what the rules are in Conn. BUT, I strongly doubt that any insurance company has the SOLE right to decide what the fair market value is for anything with out some recourse when there is a difference of opinion. Example, here in California, one TDI club member recently took his insurance company to arbitration over the car value, the arbitration panel could not agree on a value, so they set up another arbitration panel who did settle on a value that was 3 times what the insurance company "thought" was fair market value. Now, this TDI club member was very persistent and put out several hundred dollars in appraisal fees, but got a much more reasonable value than the company offered. Insurance companies count on the insured getting tired of the process and eventually, just taking what they are offered and moving on. Most of the time they win! Your state's insurance commissioner office should be able to tell you what the process is IF your insurance company is unwilling to inform you.

So Bo, which company provides agreed value coverage for a car/truck in daily use? Also, what was your cost for what agreed value - if you don't mind sharing.

Third brake light/cargo light
johnj92131 replied to Dzimm's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I think you are giving the Police more credit than they earned. First, a cargo light is white - a brake light is red. Second, the two tail lights make it easy to spot a bad light from a very long way off. Not so with a single high mounted brake light. My Passat came from the factory with a 3rd brake light that I have removed. I have never been asked about it - and yes - I have been pulled over a couple of times in the last 10 years. -
Thanks to both of you. The CPS certainly makes sense. The TDI gets its crank position information from the front of the engine once the flywheel is at top dead center, the injection pump is mechanically timed and locked down. My kit comes with a 4.0 starter, I need to supply the clutch and flywheel for the AX-15. My next issue is if I want to convert from the internal slave to the external slave now or just keep the internal slave. Has anyone converted to the external slave without changing the bell housing? The 90 was Renix; the 91 was HO. They use different fuel systems/electronics. The flywheels are different. The Jeep's CPS count the teeth on the flywheel to tell the computer where the crank is and which injector to fire. I don't know how the TDI's electronics work with the flywheel. It seems to me you would want electronic to that engine. As for spline counts, that is at the other end of the trans, where it bolts to the tcase. In 90 and 91, each yr. came with the AX15 with 23 splines-out. That should not be an issue for the TDI.

From recent Ebay sold listings: All 2001 year. You may also want to check for 2000 year sales. http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Jeep-Cherokee-SPORT-XJ-/252681848902?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3ad5030846:g:PrQAAOSwHMJYMjWZ&item=252681848902 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Jeep-Cherokee-Sport-/122269814252?forcerrptr=true&hash=item1c77d94dec:g:80cAAOSwj85YRt79&item=122269814252 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Jeep-Cherokee-Sport-4X4-SUV-1-OWNER-SMOKE-FREE-NO-RESERVE-/361840183712?forcerrptr=true&hash=item543f5b09a0:g:3psAAOSwHMJYO1gR&item=361840183712 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Jeep-Cherokee-SPORT-XJ-/291956025932?forcerrptr=true&hash=item43f9ef6a4c:g:GnsAAOSw8gVYA-5s&item=291956025932 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Jeep-Cherokee-SPORT-XJ-/252645229463?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3ad2d44397:g:PrQAAOSwHMJYMjWZ&item=252645229463 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Jeep-Cherokee-Sport-Sport-Utility-4-Door-/262735067046?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3d2c3af7a6:g:398AAOSwo4pYORfz&item=262735067046 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Jeep-Cherokee-sport-/132011076418?forcerrptr=true&hash=item1ebc792b42:g:U9MAAOSw44BYIj86&item=132011076418 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Jeep-Cherokee-sport-/131997743320?forcerrptr=true&hash=item1ebbadb8d8:g:U9MAAOSw44BYIj86&item=131997743320 http://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Jeep-Cherokee-XJ-Sport-4x4-62K-Low-Miles-/272439537366?forcerrptr=true&hash=item3f6ea96ed6:g:3EwAAOSwKOJYF67a&item=272439537366

I have never seen a plastic OEM gas tank for the Comanche. You can find new, steel replacement tanks on Amazon and Ebay for less than $100, depending on size.

While looking on Ebay for a clutch kit to use with the AX-15 on my TDI conversion I noticed listings for 4.0 flywheels were different for the Renix era from the H.O. era. I had been looking at LUK clutch kits specifically when I noticed that different flywheels also seemed to be specified. Is there a difference in the 4.0 flywheel from 1990 to 1991? I know the transmission spline count is different (21 vs 23), but why would the flywheel be different? Thanks for any pointers.

Nothing wrong with having questions. Even after reading a DIY article. It is natural to have questions about things you have never done before or using tools you know nothing about. Everything we learn new depends on having a foundation of previous learning. DIY articles require some basic foundation knowledge. It doesn't matter if it how to fix a car or how to find a book in a library, if you lack the foundation knowledge, it is a difficult process to fathom. So don't be afraid to ask questions about what you don't understand. But, please do try to ask specific, detailed questions. Questions like "Why doesn't my truck run?" will not get to the root of the issue. But if you say "My truck doesn't run after I ran out of gas, how do I find/fix the problem?" You will get better answers like: "Change the fuel filter, you may have picked up crud from the bottom of your tank that is blocking your fuel line." Even that answer "assumes" that you had enough knowledge to put several gallons of gas in the tank before you tried to restart the car.

Welcome Nathan, Your truck body looks to be in decent shape with original paint? Your Cherokee front bumper should transfer right over to the MJ with no trouble. That little 4 banger should be nice for a daily driver.
