Direct bolt in, Yes you can remove all the vacuum lines to the CAD, when you swap the other d30 in.
-
You can always just swap the knuckles over too, Thats what i did when i went from cad -> Non cad, Since i had just bought new brakes shortly before.

What gear ratio is in the xj d30? 8.8 is 4.10 right? http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-16502363-yukon-dana-30-reverse-hp-4-10-ring-pinion.html http://eastcoastgearsupply.com/i-126965-dana-30-reverse-cjinstall-kit-master.html That's basically all you need, Unless the current gears in the d30 are really low, Then you'll need a different carrier. I'm not sure what they are because the tabs are gone. And ya the 8.8 is 4.10s BTW how's the exo cage? I think I might build something like ryansatrocks one. I have all the tools and I've help build one so I think I might give it a whirl in the near future Spin the tire once, Count how many times the pinion spins. IIRC 3.73 & Above is the carrier you need. 3.55 & below is the wrong carrier Cage is coming along nicely, Got 90% of the front cut out & tack welded together. Tomorrow we should finish the whole front cage, Probably take it off & completely weld it too.

Decided to start building my cage, While i wait for my axle to get out of the shop. Axle should be back tomorrow, only have two peices left of the cage to build atm in the front. Still have to figure out how I'm going to do the rear. -

Starting my Exo-Cage tomorrow, Any pointers?
Lee21490 replied to Lee21490's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I currently have Nates4x4 rock sliders on my jeep, I think i'll tie the cage into that. Would the 8 bolts + Pinch seam clamps be strong enough to hold the cage also? Or should i weld in some extra supports on it? Most of the wheeling around here is in dense tree's, Not very many places where i could actually roll down a hill. Thats why i was thinking 1 1/4 -

A little of both i guess. Was thinking something like the front of that White XJ Not sure how i'll tie the rear in. Sweet, Thats a good idea! Bro-inlaw can get 1 1/4" Tubing for cost from his work, but still would rather not waste money. -
Will be the first cage i've ever built, Bro-Inlaw will be welding everything for me & has made his own cage before on a toyota. Been searching around for exo-cage builds, havent found too much. Wondering what other people have done for theirs, Any advice? Not too worried about rolling it, Just need some protection from tree's.

Will be dropping it back off at the shop hopefully friday. -

Alright, Well the axles broken. The shop never put oil in the diff, Assumed i was going to & Never mentioned it when i picked it up. Thankfully after pulling the cover, i THINK the only thing that fried was the pinion bearing -

Did Midas do that complete install? I really need an upgrade in that area. No, I did it myself. I just had midas do my alignment, They were the only shop that day that wasnt a week+ Out on appointments >_< So update on the truck; Picked up the axle @ 5pm, Took about 5~ hours to get it completely bolted into the truck & drove it home. I got a few pictures, I'll post them in the morning way too dirty/tired to deal with transfering them. -
Hey, Another CC member that lives 30 minutes south of me! Like eagle said, Check the grounds. Could also be a shorted wire.

Meanwhile my truck sits without an axle at my brother inlaw's shop, And he just picked up antoher toyota Sat, That he's waiting to work on. EDIT: Got ahold of the owner just now, He JUST started on the axle. Said he should have it done by 5. -
You live about an hour~ South of me! There's so many people on CC that live in washington lol

Axle swap and gearing question.
Lee21490 replied to Knucklehead97's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Nates rear bumper is pretty damn good. I've bashed the hell out of it wheeling & havent really done any damage. Their cheap front bumper however, I've nearly destroyed already lol -

I need to know it all for the AX15 swap
Lee21490 replied to Jackrabbit41's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Btw jack, The guy on C'list i picked up my non disco d30 from, Had an entire box truck full of ax15's lol That guy had like 10 parted out XJ's in his front yard, And even a decent looking MJ. It was absolutely insane the amount of parts he had stacked on shelves. Told him about the site & how people are always looking for parts. Think he wanted $400 for the internal ax15, And $500 for the external. -

Alright! Time for an update. I took out & stripped the D30 in my truck Only to find out the ball joint holes are so worn out the new ball joints just fall into place without any pressure... Found a Non-Disconnect d30 out of a '92 cherokee on craigslist, Picked it up yesterday & stripped it down to nothing. Spent today pressure washing it, Then wire wheeling it, Then heavily painting the entire housing, Put in the new Spicer ball joints, Put my old knuckles on so i can re-use my pretty much new brake setup. Tomorrow I'll drop off the axle at a shop to install my gears/locker. Picture Time!: That's what happens when the U-Joint snaps in the middle of the trail & get towed out to the road lol "New" D30 After i stripped it, Hadnt cleaned it at all yet. Painted, But Balljoints/Knuckles not installed. 100% Ready to be taken to the shop tomorrow & have it Re-Geared! Hopefully I should have it regeared & installed by tomorrow night, If all goes well. -
What's the advantage to a non CAD? Easier to truss, Some people argue its stronger than the CAD version, Stock CAD has a two peice axle shaft on the pass side that is prone to failure.
-
Thanks for all the replies guys, But i really think its time to lay this tired housing down to rest. The amount of play in the ball joint mount is actually quite scary, You can wiggle them around by hand quite a bit when fully seated. I'll be picking up a Non CAD d30 from craigslist sometime tomorrow to use in my rebuild.
-
I think i'll just pick up a new housing, Get one without the CAD too. Its so loose the new one just falls right into place lol
-
Well it turns out the housing is absolutely @#$%ed. Somehow some of the metal where the balljoint mounts, Fused to one of the ball joints. 2 BJ fit tightly, The other two holes are enlarged.
-
Old ones fit tightly into the housing, New ones flop around while fully seated. Double checked the part # on the box, It is the one thats supposed to work. I am so lost right now.
