Adjustable control arms and 35s
Lee21490 replied to Jackrabbit41's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Should I just go to a junkyard and pull off the steering from a zj? No. The only difference is a slightly stronger tie rod (and that's only on the V8 models). It really isn't much of an upgrade. I've seen them bend just as easy as stock XJ rods. As was stated above, the entire stock XJ steering is weak when you go offroad. There are a bunch of companies who make nice 1 ton set-ups. They come with heavy duty TREs and heavy duty drag link and tie rod. You ream out your knuckles and bolt up the new stuff. It's pretty simple, a whole lot stronger, and only costs a couple hundred bucks. He mostly drives on the road, with very little actual offroading. The v8 tie rod is a hell of a lot stronger than the stock xj/mj setup. http://www.ironrockoffroad.com/11060.html This is the OTK 1ton steering i got, If you want i can run over & show you it in person. -

http://www.ironrockoffroad.com/10215.html Save $40~ getting this instead of the bracket & Bar seperately. Using the CA drop bracket WITH 4" lower CA links might be detrimental. The CA drop kit brings the mount forward a few inches. The Stock WJ Control arms are pretty much the perfect length with the drop brackets & Are stronger than the MJ CA's. At 4.5" With the Trac-bar drop bracket, You don't need the pitman drop arm. The Stock V8 WJ tie-rod/Steering linkage is most likely stronger than the omix stuff -
If anyones interested, Humblebundle.com has Spintires + 10 other games for $9 atm Messed around with it a little just now, Pretty fun so far. Wheel it like you stole it!

It will flex a bit. I've had it pinned out so much you couldnt open the door at all. Was it on a lift? that should have lifted it straight up? Shouldnt have flexed at all.

Scotch & a hammer. I repair things on the trail Jeremy Clarkson style! -
Check the connections where he added the trailer harness. My trucks PO Did the same thing.. And the splicers he used got filled with water & shorted themselves out.

Sweet! Got the axle back already? Let me know if you need a hand with your lift/axle/etc.
-
Up a random mountain near me to try to go deer hunting. Area i went was a bust though, Way too steep & Way too many 'party/shooting' pits. Hopefully going to another mt tomorrow to try my luck again!
-
Got a pic of the rivet?
-
LOL Glad you got it back though.

I just watched a video of your rig on some random youtube channel. pretty cool and ya I'm planning on getting a roll of some of that insulator type plastic stuff and that'll hopefully make it look cleaner too. Yea, Was my first attempt at a gopro vid xD It was the day i broke my axle. Gopro died before that though, Going to run a power wire to it next time, Battery doesnt last very long. This is just hilarious. Must have thought it was in drive.

I've always been a little wary about crossing the boarder with a wheeler lol Nice! Hopefully i'm going to be planning a wheeling trip here in the next few weeks. Finished with my truck for now, Just have to help my bro-inlaw finish his toyota real quick.

Its an Auto. True, I just don't have a shop/dry area to climb under it currenty Rainy season here in washington lol
-
You have to remove the starter for this, Right? I believe its still under warranty though, Which is good. Thats what i was thinking after it 50-50 started when i wiggled the wire, I stuck my hand under there & They were solid to the starter.
-
So i'm pretty confused by this. Turn the key, You hear the solenoid clank in the starter, But doesnt even try to turn over. Battery reads 12.5v been driving it all day just fine, Started fine all day, No struggling sound etc. Tried P & N on the shifter, just incase. Did it earlier today & Then finally cranked over normally without issue. Got home & now it won't crank. Starter is less than a year old. Any tips what to check first, Before i rip the starter out? /e think it might be the wiring to the starter. Wiggled it a bit & now the truck starts about 50% of the time i turn the key over. can't climb under it till later, Its raining pretty good out lol

You'd have to cut the weld to remove the bumpers. Thanks. Was stopping at the part store/home depot on the way out to ferndale to finish welding/painting it. So you saw it all rusty/Unfinished. -

Those look terrible lol

Did you ever get your axle back yet?
-
Aussie locker is what i was looking into awhile back. Ended up just paying the extra for Yukon Grizzly front/Back.

Might as well do 4.56 if you have the option. I'm running 4.10's on 33x12.5's it does just fine. I wouldnt use larger tires with it though.
