Post lift problems? (tranny?)
87MJTIM replied to Jackrabbit41's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You need a trans from a 4wd. The 2wd trans won't allow for the tcase to bolt up. -
Anybody bought seat brackets off of Andys Autosport??
87MJTIM replied to Kano808's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The website claims they fit "74 to 92" Comanches. What does a 1978 MJ look like? -

Mid-89 MJs and XJs have the AX15. However, these were also internal slave cylinders. Jeep switched to the external slaves with the 94 yr. So, look for a 94+ AX15 or get an earlier yr and a bellhousing for the external slave system. Be aware that in 98 (?) the input shaft size changed. You will have to change the pilot bushing to fit the input shaft. -

You stated the clutch master cyl was replaced and that you lost fluid two weeks later. Also, you noticed fluid coming from the bell housing. That suggests to me a bad slave cylinder. If your 87 has the BA10, that means dropping the trans and replacing the (whole trans with an AX15 with an external) slave cylinder. As for the carpeting, I replaced mine from Custom Interiors. They were able to match the original color. I purchased a reprint of the 87 FSM off ebay. Be aware that for 87/88, Jeep just took the 86 FSM and added TSBs and supplements for the later years. -
I have had to lower the trans, loosen the pressure plate and realign the clutch disk - several times.

The "seats" will swap over. HOWEVER: The seat brackets are not the same between MJs and XJs. So you will need to put the XJ seats on the MJ seat brackets. AND The 4 dr seats do not fold forward to gain access to the "spacious" storage area behind the seats. To have folding seats, look for a 2 dr XJ.

The flat one could connect to the washer fluid level indicator (C168) The not flat one could be for an XJ rear window washer motor. (C195) The wiring harness was the same for MJ and XJ. According to the 88 electric FSM, both connectors were not used in the MJ. I don't believe the MJ ever had ABS. What yr is your MJ?

Sorry, my bad. I never kept up with the GCs. (Personally, I didn't/don't like any of the GCs)

The V6 2.8 was in early XJ and MJ - 84-86. The I6 4.0 was used from 87-06 in jeeps. After 06, jeep installed V6 3.8. The XJ ended in 01. The Grand Cherokee (ZJ & WJ) started in 93. The WJ would have the V6. If you found an early XJ with a V6 2.8 just RUN AWAY! I don't think the bolt patterns for V6s mate up with the 4.0 matched trans.

Take your current DS and get it shortened once you know by how much.
-
The rear, yes. I swapped tran in a CJ and had both DS lengths changed. One lengthened, one shortened. It cost a few $$. Since it is only one, it would not cost as much.
-
MJ = Comanche 86 to 92 XJ = Cherokee 84 to 01 YJ = Wrangler 87 to 95 The MJ and XJ are ALMOST identical from the front seats forward. The 4wd parts from any comparably equipped MJ/XJ will bolt right in. The front drive shaft is the same. The rear DS is longer for the MJ, whether it's SWB or LWB. I believe there are differences with the YJ setup but I am not sure of them.

Possibly the wrong water pump. The blade finns are reversed. Take it back to where you got it and have them look up for your yr and model. If their computer doesn't have MJs tell them it's an XJ.

87s did not have the ballast resistor. -
Starter. Lights have dimmed because you drained the battery trying to start the engine.

help transmssion change finish can't start

You should use a CPS for the renix not the three wire -
I am not sure of the oil level in a 2.5 (4.0 is 6 qts.) The little bit of oil dripping out from any leak would hardly be noticeable on the dip stick. For the trans oil level, I would still suggest draining the old gear oil and measure how much came out. My searching shows the AX5 (like the 15) takes 3.3 qts. I you get less then 3 qts. there's your problem. If it is the trans, dropping it and the tcase are fun! Buy a trans jack.

The OP said in post #3, he has an "inline 4." I assume that he has a 2.5L 4 cyl. That means he has either an AX4 (4spd) or AX5 (5spd). So all references to an AX15 may not apply. The oil coming through the bellhousing could be dirty from the dirt that accumulates in the BH. Smelling it may have a sulfer scent. That would tell if it is gear oil or motor oil. However, the PO put in motor oil, then it would not pass the "sniff test." If the OP doesnt know when the trans oil was changed previously, it is a good time to change it. Measure how much comes out. Compare that amount with how much it holds. Look that up on line based on the trans. That may indicate a leak in the trans. If the oil out is approx. the correct volumn, then go back to the valve cover, oil filter adapter, oil pressure unit, dizzy. To change a RMS, it is MESSY, time consuming and MESSY. I doesnt require a lot of special tools. Mostly sockets sets, jackstands, rubber mallet and about 6 hours (if you have never done this before.) Oh, did say it is MESSY!

Over heats while idling/sitting still
87MJTIM replied to Paul Bruchal's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Mine did this once before. Turned out to be broken water pump. Driving was fine because the water would circulate itself while moving. Once I stopped, the water stopped circulating. Next possibility would be e-fan. Check the temp switch and the relay. -
gauge cluster QUESTION please help
87MJTIM replied to 86manche207's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I don't know. It would depend on the year of the cluster the PO installed. Earlier years had one type of speedo connection. Later models used electronic speedos. The other gauges may have changed also -

That looks like the sender unit. You also need the temp sender. -

87MJTIM replied to 86manche207's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The PO may not have changed the temp and oil sensors to senders.
