  1. Thanks for the write up. I will be performing this swap this month or next (Sept). My BA10 has a whine at higher RPMs. I think it is the release bearing going bad (again x5). I have a 98 XJ ax 15 and a 90 XJ NP231 ready and waiting to go in. I have two (2) ax15 crossmembers and mounting brackets. When I am done, I may put the extra parts up for CC members. I MAY.
  2. Jeepjeff859, It looks like you have a "franken-Jeep." 86 body, 94 engine and an ax15 w/ internal slave. The internal was used with the mid-89 to 93 XJ and MJ. That said, the internal slave has two lines that stick out of the bellhousing. One connects to the line from the master; the second is for bleeding. The second has the bleed nipple on the end. The pics on RA shows what looks like sleeve covers for the connects. This will keep dirt from getting on to the connector and in to the hydraulic system.
  3. IMHO - In my humble opinion TOB - Throw out bearing :waving:
  4. http://comancheclub.com/topic/12083-electrical-manual/ Download it to your desktop
  5. I'm gonna haveta drop the Fey bumper and make some mod's to it in order to fit the hitch.
  6. The UPS driver just dropped this off: Thanks Krustybailer! (for those of you who don't know or don't remember, that was from "The Jerk" with Steve Martin.)
  7. $250 more and you'll have a whole Jeep!
  8. Find a new source. The MJ and XJ front bumpers are the same.
  9. get the whole thing.,,,including the brake booster!
  10. Double check that. The 88 XJ would have come with a BA10 and a 21 spline Tcase. If a PO swapped trans and tcase then you are good to go. (The tcase for the AX15 has a 23 spline input.)
  11. You will need to find a BH for an external slave. My 2ยข: Keep looking for one with a complete ext. sl. set up. It will cost more than this one, but less than piecing them together. Ebay has BHs for $175 - $200 +/-. You'll be $500+ on a complete setup. If you can find one for $500 or under, you'll be ahead.
  12. http://york.craigslist.org/pts/5122518476.html The page has an MJ, can't tell the year, for parts. Long bed with a topper. Just FYI
  13. You need a trans from a 4wd. The 2wd trans won't allow for the tcase to bolt up.
  14. The website claims they fit "74 to 92" Comanches. What does a 1978 MJ look like?
  15. Mid-89 MJs and XJs have the AX15. However, these were also internal slave cylinders. Jeep switched to the external slaves with the 94 yr. So, look for a 94+ AX15 or get an earlier yr and a bellhousing for the external slave system. Be aware that in 98 (?) the input shaft size changed. You will have to change the pilot bushing to fit the input shaft.
  16. You stated the clutch master cyl was replaced and that you lost fluid two weeks later. Also, you noticed fluid coming from the bell housing. That suggests to me a bad slave cylinder. If your 87 has the BA10, that means dropping the trans and replacing the (whole trans with an AX15 with an external) slave cylinder. As for the carpeting, I replaced mine from Custom Interiors. They were able to match the original color. I purchased a reprint of the 87 FSM off ebay. Be aware that for 87/88, Jeep just took the 86 FSM and added TSBs and supplements for the later years.
  17. I have had to lower the trans, loosen the pressure plate and realign the clutch disk - several times.
  18. The "seats" will swap over. HOWEVER: The seat brackets are not the same between MJs and XJs. So you will need to put the XJ seats on the MJ seat brackets. AND The 4 dr seats do not fold forward to gain access to the "spacious" storage area behind the seats. To have folding seats, look for a 2 dr XJ.
  19. The flat one could connect to the washer fluid level indicator (C168) The not flat one could be for an XJ rear window washer motor. (C195) The wiring harness was the same for MJ and XJ. According to the 88 electric FSM, both connectors were not used in the MJ. I don't believe the MJ ever had ABS. What yr is your MJ?
  20. Sorry, my bad. I never kept up with the GCs. (Personally, I didn't/don't like any of the GCs)
  21. The V6 2.8 was in early XJ and MJ - 84-86. The I6 4.0 was used from 87-06 in jeeps. After 06, jeep installed V6 3.8. The XJ ended in 01. The Grand Cherokee (ZJ & WJ) started in 93. The WJ would have the V6. If you found an early XJ with a V6 2.8 just RUN AWAY! I don't think the bolt patterns for V6s mate up with the 4.0 matched trans.
  22. Take your current DS and get it shortened once you know by how much.
  23. The rear, yes. I swapped tran in a CJ and had both DS lengths changed. One lengthened, one shortened. It cost a few $$. Since it is only one, it would not cost as much.
  24. MJ = Comanche 86 to 92 XJ = Cherokee 84 to 01 YJ = Wrangler 87 to 95 The MJ and XJ are ALMOST identical from the front seats forward. The 4wd parts from any comparably equipped MJ/XJ will bolt right in. The front drive shaft is the same. The rear DS is longer for the MJ, whether it's SWB or LWB. I believe there are differences with the YJ setup but I am not sure of them.
