  1. Get the 88 electric manual for your reference library. HOWEVER, be aware there are subtitle differences from 87 to 88. I have a paper copy of the 87 electric manual. While doing some electric work on my truck, the wiring did not match the diagrams in the 87 manual. I checked the 88 manual and it matched what I have. I found some other difference just in the configuration of part between 87 and 88. My MJ came off the line in May 87. So it was a late model year production. Jeep must have started using components designed for the 88 models. (AMC = any makers components) (Before anyone comments: I am the original owner. There have been no electrical modifications done to the truck.)
  2. I think he works on his Jeep XJ. I started following him on Youtube for repairs and modification to the Jeep before he started the REM videos.
  3. Does it make you want to buy a Renix now to have the monitor?
  4. I plan on going. I love the old Jeeps - CJ8s and CJ10s, old Commandos, FCs, etc. I love to meet other MJ owners as well. My nephew came with in '16. He loved it. He has a '15 (?) JKU. The only dirt is sees is possibly a construction site.
  5. I love a stock Jeep, also. Although, lightly modified Jeeps aren't bad either. Most of the XJ there are heavily modified. Too much for my taste. The All Breeds Jeep Show is located on the in-field of a horse racing track. A lane cuts through the middle. One half of the in-field has all breeds of Jeep - EXCEPT for JKs. Those have the other half of the field. It is getting to be a JK Jeep Show.
  6. Yep! That is my gold MJ in the top picture. It was good to meet other CC members and lots of MJs. I plan on going next year. However, I will not be displaying my truck.
  7. Following this thread. My truck has cruise control and I have trouble with the cable. I was considering eliminating the cruise control. I look at Napa for a cable. The online store showed the cable for cruise. I thought the cruise control cables were NLA. I was wrong! Napa part #615-1604 (can’t attach photo) figured it out
  8. Would it work in a manual trans - AX15? Is it friendly to brass parts? The Lucas data sheet says "it exceeds all GL classifications." Whatever that means.
  9. You need to change the sensors from switches. The switches will not work with gauges.
  10. That's a sway bar link. Not hard to replace. Be sure to buy two. The driver's side is just as old as the passenger's side.
  11. Look on craigslist in your area. You may find someone selling or parting out an MJ. You could piece together your missing/needed parts.
  12. Yes, it is the same length. In fact, I took the speedo out of an older tcase (21 spline) that used to be on the truck.
  13. I did clock it with the gear teeth range at 6. I thought I saw that on youtube. I will double check the orientation.
  14. Nori, thanks. I will try greasing the cable ends. Previously, I did spray on some lithium lube on the speedo cogs. It just gummed up the speedo causing it to read under and make noise. I later sprayed on different lube to loosen up the old junk. This was on the first speedo mentioned, not the second one I installed. The lithium should not have affected the second speedo. I also sprayed lithium into the cable. But all it did was spray back at me. I do not think it got down into the whole cable. Also, when I spin the cable, I cannot feel any resistance or binding. You mentioned the drive gear in the tcase. That is not something I messed with. If I think this through, the gear would have to spin freely on the output shaft - thus not turning the speedo gear. I guess I would have to pull the tail housing to inspect that. Oh, joy.
  15. My 87 4.0 is have problems with the speedometer. I will be driving along and the needle will start to bounce. Then it will drop to zero. No movement. No mileage changing. Nothing! When I get back in to drive later, the needle will work for awhile. I started using a GPS to track my speed. When the needle is working, the speed matches the GPS. Sometimes it will work for many miles, other times I cannot get out of my neighborhood before it stops. The MJ has cruise. Thus the speedo cables have two sections. Steps done, both before and after the issue started: 1. Before the problems started, I swapped in a new speedo gear. I found that my mileage was 5 mph lower than I was actually driving. Changed from 31 to 29 tooth gear. 2. When it first happened, I checked all the cables. I disconnected cables and spun them. Both ends turned freely without any binding or looseness. 3. Checked the cruise rev counter. It turned freely, also. 4. Reconnected all cables and drove it around. The needle worked at first, but after a few miles, it dropped to zero again. 5. Thought maybe the gear may be bad. Swapped back in the 31 tooth. Same problem. 6. Put back in the 29 tooth. Made sure that the number of teeth marking is at the 6 o'clock position when installing the gear holder. 7. Swapped out the speedo cluster with one I know worked. Same problem. 8. Rechecked the speedo gear to make sure it wasn't spinning against the cable. The gear held the cable tightly. Help! I've checked each end of the system and the parts in between. I've swapped out parts that I know were working previously, yet I am still have the problem. What haven't I considered?
  16. I DD mine regularly, but my office is 3 miles from my house. I also drive it around locally to stores and whatnot. I will take it on long trips to camping in WV or for hauling stuff for family members. Long trips for work, I drive one of my many other vehicles. As for driving a Renix, I would drive my MJ across country if given the opportunity.
  17. Ant, here is a write up of the swap: I have a write up on my swap, but...thanks to BotoPhucket, the picture links are gone.
  18. Ant, here is a link to the 88 electrical manual. Save to your desk top and print out a hard copy for easy reference. I cannot tell if yours is a BA10. Your picture is the back of the tcase. However, 88, 4.0 5 speeds came with the BA10. The vacuum line could be for the heater control valve. It is hard to see in the picture if a PO removed it. Does yours have the reservoir bottle on at the firewall?
  19. You may want to purchase a Renix Engine Monitor (REM) from Nickintime on facebook. https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=nickintimefilms He sells these units that will give you real time info on how the engine is running. One reading is the O2 sensor. It may be operating correctly, but something else is causing it to run in open loop. This is an issue I'm having. My O2 bounces around a lot but mostly stays at or below 2.5.Yet, I'm running in open loop most of the time.
  20. Eagle, I am waiting patiently for this book!
  21. Thank you.  It is my father in law.

My dad died of a heart attack when I was 20.  He was only 52 at the time.  He was hard man to get to know when I was young.  He was the rule enforcer, but NEVER abusive.  As I got older we could talk to each other more, but at only 20 it was not easy to show my emotions.  An older brother really connected with him.  Both had been in the military, so they shared those experiences.

    Thank you for your words.

    1. Motorhead X

      Motorhead X

That must have been real tough to experience, even at 20. I relate to our fathers being hard to get to know. It was never easy to show emotions either in our house. My Dad felt that being upset was a sign of weakness and my Mom was uncomfortable with showing anger. I should nickname it the Great Repression... and now I am having emotions about my dad! Such irony.

I wish for you and your wife strength while coping with your father in law and peace in knowing your Dad is still there with you all the time.

      Thank you for sharing.

  22. My father in law has Alzheimer's. He is currently in a nursing home. It is hard on my wife's family to go and see him. Be sure to visit him while he still remembers/recognizes you. Make the most of it. I understand you were not always close, but forgiveness begins with you. When he is gone (and it happens to everyone) you will not look back and say "I should have gone to see more often." You say you're not very religious, but he became more religious later in life. You might contact the priest/minister of his church to talk about YOUR issues. If they're a good priest, they will not try to convert you. They should just help you understand/deal with what you are going through.
  23. I would strongly recommend contacting someone in Social Services about your situation (best to leave out any mention of a "hunting accident"). Find out from them other resources for both him and you. Follow up with some of the resources about additional options. If he is still mentally competent, contact an attorney to draft up medical directive and most importantly, a DNR directive - Do Not Resuscitate - should something happen to him.
  24. Judging from the lettering used for "Comanche" it looks like the 97+ lettering used on the Cherokees. So, Pete is probably correct with the age. Funny thing is that Jeep had not made a Comanche for ~8 yrs. from when that bike was made.
  25. I rolled a car in college. Driving with my girlfriend (now wife) at night on a twisting road. Driving faster than I should. Road made a sudden turn; I jerked the wheel, the car slid sideways off the road and made slow roll on to the roof. Neither one of us were scratched. Not wearing seat belts. After that experience, I DO NOT ride in a car without having one on.
