The YJ transmission clocks differently than an XJ/MJ trans. From what I've seen/read there would be no need to cut the floor, especially up that high.
-
Both the AX15/231 and the BA10/231 line up with the factory trans-tunnel/console opening. There was not need to cut the floor. If the PO cut the floor when he/she did the 4wd conversion makes me think he/she "took some liberties" with the swap. You should check the work to make sure nothing is F'ed up.

Cherokee vs Comanche Blower Motor
87MJTIM replied to Cali Cruse's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Hey! Don't go knockin' Corvairs! My dad had two and he loved them. R Nader does not know how to drive, that's all. -
There are lots of thread on CC with the parts list and steps to perform. I did the swap on mine several years ago and made a thread. (Sadly, the pictures were uploaded on photobucket and the links were broken.) Several items that come to mind immediately (assuming you have a BA 10): A tcase that mates to the AX15 (the one with the BA will not fit) AX15 trans mount and cross member (again, the ones for the BA10 will not fit.) You don't say if your AX15 has the internal or external slave cylinder. This is important not only for the slave cylinder, but also for the clutch kits. The tcase shift linkage for the AX15 (you can modify the BA to work or purchase after market shifters) Depending on the year of the AX15, the input shaft tip size changed from ~1/2" to ~3/4". You would have to change the pilot bearing/bushing. (See changing clutch kit above.) Others may add to this list. Good luck.

Do Wiring Diagrams change for each year?
87MJTIM replied to WolverineCub's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
yes, it does. I have an 87 electric manual (paper) and the 88 manual (pdf). I found at least 2 cases where the 87 manual does not match the actual wiring in my MJ. However, the 88 manual does match the wiring in the truck. My truck had May 87 production date. AMC must have run out of the 87 wiring harness. The assembly line must have used the 88 harness.- 5 replies

Not a problem.

Nice truck, Horn. But it looks like a Renix

The picture was the right side. Based on his written question, you are correct. However, I was referring to his picture.

On my MJ those are on the left side

XJs used the same dash bezel. Those two spaces had rear window wiper and defroster switches. MJs did not have either switch.

For quite a few years, my MJ was a weekend-to-the-hardware-store truck. For probably 5 years, I put on less than 1000 mile per yr. I started to drive it more frequently and remembered how much I love it. I was also looking to get another vehicle to be a DD. No new cars/trucks captured my interest. I then started to look at getting the MJ a "refreshing." I spent less to have it refreshed (engine rebuild, rust repair and repaint) then a new vehicle would cost. Now my MJ looks (almost) new. It is my DD. I receive lots of compliments almost daily. I plan on keeping it another 30+ years.

XJ rear wipers and defroster. Neither ones for an MJ.

Anyone know what this is?

Update your signature to include a description of your truck: year, engine, trans, 2 or 4 wd, any modifications done -

Doesn’t the CC use the “football “ bottle, while the one pictured is the “grapefruit “ bottle? -
I did get it a few years ago. You can try searching for similar models. I bought it at Best Buy.

I had to remove the dash bezel. Then pull out the radio. I adapted the wiring harness. Also routed the microphone under the dash and up the A pillar

vacuum bottle. It holds the vacuum to control all the parts that need vacuum. -
I installed a JVC KD X50BT. Bluetooth ready. No more cassettes or CDs, just link to my phone

How fast are driving in 4H? What road surface are on? A 231 is not meant to be driven as AWD.

Congratulations. My wife and I just celebrated 30 years.

clutch pedal adjustment.....?
87MJTIM replied to rocketwheels's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The 87 probably needs bleeding. Sounds like there’s air in the line. The 89 may have a bad (going bad) slave cylinder. Are the the trans original? Internal slave cylinders -
Replace BA10-5 with AX-15
87MJTIM replied to JustEmptyEveryPocket's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I guess I lucked out. I got an AX15 from a 90 XJ (int. slave). I purchased off ebay an ext. slave bellhousing. I installed this in my CJ. I bought another one off craigslist for $300. Seller said it came from a 98 XJ. I installed this one in my MJ. Both work well. The MJ gets lots more miles since it my DD. The CJ has been a WIP rebuild for the last two years, so it isn't getting many miles. I found the one from the 90 shifts better than the one from the 98. -

4. The clutch should match the trans. When you order the clutch kit, be sure you get one for your 98 AX15. The pressure plates changed from the internal slave to the external slaves. I've had good Luk with Luk. 6. Yes. I have an AX15 from a 98 XJ, also. My cable just screws on. I did my swap in one weekend. I started taking things off on Friday PM and had it all back together on Sunday. A trans jack is MOST useful. I rented one for my CJ swap. I bought a Horror Fright jack for about ~$100. I've used it a couple times. One issue I ran into was the loaner pilot bearing/bushing puller. The tips would not fit inside the old bushing. I ended up pushing out one of the dowels that holds the gripping tip. I then put tips inside the bushing and put the dowel back in puller. The loaner slide hammer made quick work of getting the old one out. (There are lots of videos on U-tube about using grease/bread/wet paper towels. I tried one on my CJ and all I ended up with was wet paper towels jammed inside the bearing. The bearing never budged. After cleaning out the paper towels, that was when I learned about the puller not fitting inside the bushing.) Good luck. Post script: To take the knob off the shifter, use a heat gun on the cap top. This will soften the outer portion. You can then pop the center cap out without scarring the outer portion. The nut to remove the knob is under the cap. To install, heat the outer portion to soften it and slide the cap in to place.
