  1. Related issue: On my '88- It rattles very badly for a second or two after firing if it has sat even for a few minutes. Shutting it off and re-firing in just a few seconds prevents iy. Putting a Wix filter on it helped some. The PO had just replaced the rear main seal. The idiot light appears to work correctly. The engne rattles ( more like valvetrain ) at higher RPM's or when nailing it when warm. It runs strong, though. Idears?
  2. No breakage for me, luckily. The 6spd in the KJ has a 5:1 first and gives my KJ a 47:1 crawl ratio even though the axle gears are only 3.55's. I think that decent crawl ratio ( same as an auto Tj Rubi) makes for less drama on the trail. And I get an honest to goodness 23MPG highway if I keep it around 70. A '96 Xj lost a unit bearing about 15 miles out on the way home....got it off the road before it came apart, but it had tons of play and was visibly wobbly. Lucky it did not seperate. The Aussie in the rear is a great bang-for-the-buck. I kinda wish my MJ had an open rear... :D
  3. Took the KJ to the Badlands in Attica, IN yesterday. Good times. The KJ, even with only 31" tires, made a good impression. Why people are constantly shocked that the KJ is as capable as any similarly-sized-tire rig with comparable equipment is beyond me. Crappy pics from cell phone: http://www.ifsjeepers.com/phpBB3/viewto ... f=15&t=156 Not a big picture guy, so none of the hairier stuff got photographed. If anyone who can go has not been to the Badlands yet, I highly recommend it. Lots of varrying terrain and good times.
  4. XJ's become very profitable due to the long long product run vs. the length of time it took to recover the original costs of the stamps/design/etc.... I thought the pick-up was a go again (for now?) Starting with the FSJ in '63, Jeep SUV's always outsold jeep pick-up's From day one, jeep pick-ups were more limited in options than the big three competitors. No 1-ton, for example.
  5. "It ain't the truth, it's the proof"
  6. the GM Dana 60 is a SFA, so yes, it went away with the change to IFS. That is why you won't find a driver's drop GM D60. Dodge kept pass. drop D60/61's through 1993 before switching to driver's side, like Ford has always been. GM has not used a D60 front in over 20 years. Chevy 350 is king because it is cheap, plentiful, and well researched. Can't fault you there, but the expense of adapting the chevy engine to a mopar tranny seems an unusual choice. If you want an AMC-patterned 727 with a driver's drop np208 attached, I know a guy who can hook you up cheap... :D Interesting is that, as you point out, AMC had very few things that were AMC except engines. The trannies were always outsourced, and most of the axles were Dana, which were used by numerous manufacturers, foreign and domestic.
  7. GM switched to IFS in the 1/2 ton models in 1988 and along with the change came a driver's drop layout. The others went IFS in '90, IIRC. So most, if not all, GM's have been driver's drop every year for 23 model years, which is longer than any "modern" parts were used as a passenger drop. Factory 4x4 was pretty rare in the 60's. It is a safe bet, using sales numbers, that more driver's drop GM 4x's were made than passeneger drop, especially if you consider the S-series. Uber trick bizarre set-ups are cool for car shows, but tend to suck if you use your jeep as a jeep. Injected/auto/driver's drop combo's are plentiful and fairly cheap. The electronics have been figured out so DIY instructions or bolt-in stuff is readily available. Personally, I am not a chevy fan and never have been ( only little boys and weirdos wear bow ties), but when it comes to swaps "common and cheap" are great things. Just don't choose your wimmin by the same criteria used for swap parts...
  8. When you tie up the driveshaft, make sure that you do it in such away that starting too suddenly will not let it slip bakwards and out of the t-case.
  9. Yeah, because that image isn't used to peddle every product on earth, especially on President's Day sales? :D I mean, be pissed that people connect the word "freedom" in the same sentence with a slave owner if you want to be sickened. I am pretty sure Vince the shamwow guy is head and shoulders better than ol' george on that point. Otherwise, it is a commercial. Lighten up, Francis. :rotfl2:
  10. Are you retaining the ax15? I thought that the manny tranny/242 combo was a no-no that ate up the 242????
  11. back the single bolt out. there is a metal "shim" between the caliper and the mount. Use a hammer and a punch to drive the shim out. once the shim is out you can remove the caliper. clean the pieces with a wire wheel/brush before re-assemby. grease the shim with anti-seize or something to make next time easier.
  12. I'm a bit new to MJ's, but are LB roll bars that rare? I picked upi my factory SB roll bar for $40.
  13. And great customer service....
  14. Nice! I'd love to have that Commando (not that anything might tip you pff to my love of commando's)
  15. How close to a sbc drivetrain swap would $1,500 get you? You can get used but servicable TBI 350's with tranny & t-case pretty cheap, $200 motor mounts, some custom exhaust, electronics, and a decent radiator?
  16. Is there a way to seperate "active member" from "post ho?" :D there seem to be a lot fewer post ho's here than on some other forums I am on. This remains pretty on topic and relative, even the Pub.
  17. pipe/tube dimensions on those?
  18. I was afraid that the FWD version used a different pattern. Too bad as it would make for a cheaper/easier swap. Maybe you should find a GN or GNX Turbo 3.8... :D j/k. The 904 was available behind low output small blocks, and can be built to withstand some serious HP..but that adds expense.
  19. IF the FWD 3800 has the same BP as the RWD one, Kaiser used that block and an adapter to bolt a version of the TH400 and a few manuals, like the bulletproof T18, to it for about a decade. The 3800 is a diect decendent of the 225. If the patterns are the same, the easiest solution would seem to be a chevy tranny/t-case aready bolted together and a relatively inexpensive BOP to Chevy bellhousing adapter. http://www.summitracing.com/search/Bran ... toview=SKU $56 or http://www.coanracing.com/PDFS/InstallI ... 980073.pdf
  20. I'll text ya
  21. i meant donkey
  22. Hit 105,000 last night. Really not much mileage. the drivetrain/body appears stock/untouched.
  23. Then jpnjim stroked
  24. Hmmmm.. I wonder what substance around Ohio would cause metal to lose structural rigidity... :fs1: salt!
