So I bought a valve cover grommet a couple years ago to replace the one I have for a better seal than the chewed up one. I got it in and its the toughest thing ever. I've revisited installing it a couple different times and the ideas have failed. Tried one time with a flat head to push it on. Poked a hole through the VC. Tried another time by boiling it, didnt soften. Tired tonight with just motor oil to slip it into place and no dice. Wondering what you guys have done if yall have ever had to replace it or any ideas at all really. here's a couple pics to show what I'm talking about: Now keep in mind, the 2.5L VC is plastic and the 4.0L is metal. I can understand the ease of installing it on the metal cover but not the plastic and thats where I am lost on installing the grommet. Theres gotta be some way those dealer techs did it to the plastic covers. Although I do appreciate the suggestion, I will not go to a later 2.5L metal VC with my set up.

I think about every 5-6 XJ's, there was one MJ, granted I kinda goofed around and started at the earliest MJ VIN I could find and just went up in numbers and found more XJ's rolled off than MJ's and SJ's as they also shared the same VIN sequence. Now that was 86. We have seen that 87-89 was what looks like the highest volume production years so that could've easily changed to every 2 XJ's was an MJ behind it.

This is actually the only thing I do not like about it. You get four machined plates with thread sticking out and 3M adhesive tape on the other side of the plates. You stick the plates to the window(glass in my case because its not a factory window) and once theyre on there you thread on the plastic nuts you are given and its on there, it even survived some strong monsoon winds last night so a plus! I opted for the hinge package which you get two machined hinges that allow you to undo two nuts and just let it hinge down into the bed, but at that point you ought to just completely remove it if you go that route.
