  1. The vin won't tell you what the original trans was. Just the motor. Be thankful you got the AX15. Sometimes if your lucky you can find the build sheet. This tells you everything that was installed when it left the factory. I've found them behind the door panels, behind and under the seat cushions and sometimes in the glove box.
  2. When a man has a good woman beside him, he can whip the world. Getting a Jeep going would be nothing. Some of the most enjoyable and memorable moments of my life is memories of the wife getting her hands dirty and Jeepin the boonies with me.
  3. It can be done either way. However it is better off the truck as that way they can weld all around the tube evenly rather than trying to weld 'sideways' on the top.
  4. It can be welded, temporary or permanent. Use a mild rod, not high carbon.
  5. Agree with the not reusing ubolts. However I think the real point to be made here is that a 25 year old vehicle needs and should get a bumper to bumper inspection every so often and especially before highway use. And not just a walk around eyeball. Jack that mother up and physically check, shake, pry every fitting, assembly, moving part on it. To quote my old first sgt. " A word to the wise is sufficient"
  6. I was getting weird noises from my latest acquisition, a 1986 MJ. When I backed up it made a grinding noise. When I backed up, stopped and then went forward it made a very loud clunk. When I went forward tromping on it it chattered. Otherwise no problem. I have a set of axles I removed from a 2001XJ so no problem. Just swap assemblies. Cut off and rewelded the spring perches as needed. Raised and blocked the MJ so I could drop both axles at same time. Crawled underneath and started spraying everything with rust penetrant. When I got to the left side of the rear axle I found my problem. The 2 UBolts had come loose, one was broke allowing the housing to move about a inch and half. Replacing the broken one and tightening the other one solved the problem. Never heard of a UBolt coming loose before.
  7. BFH? :thwak:
  8. Hey Brett, It's so dern cold here I'm almost afraid to touch any thing plastic for fear of breaking it. I'm not familiar with those bezels. Do they just pop out, or is there a catch or hook holding them? I've got 2 but I really don't want to go breaking one of them. :hmm: Jim
  9. Every one I've seen was like that. Makes it easier to spray the CPS with brake cleaner.
  10. When your having trouble with any of the tail light functions, the first thing to check is to see if a PO wired up a trailer wiring harness. If so, remove it. or at least eyeball it carefully for shorts and corrosion. Then follow common trouble shooting procedures, as out lined above.

  12. Anybody can be a engineer. It takes natural talent to be a good mechanic, er, grease monkey.
  13. Yes, but can your toes be replaced?
  14. :rotfl2: We need a relay here. How many CC members are in a line from NC to Co? :jump:
  15. $20 shipped.
  16. It can be made to fit, but it is not a bolt on.
  17. 1986 MJ vacuum Image Not Found
  18. On the way as soon as i get it copied. Unless it's been removed there is a emissions information label on the firewall, left hand side, gives that info.
  19. There are several different ones. Is your transmission standard or auto? US or Canadian? 49 state or California?
  20. Don't know which one is best. Frankly I'd just like to get the hang of how to sharpen one.

You are going to send each and every one of them, us, a hand written note, right?

    2.5+AX15

I know what your saying. Half of what I do is just out of curiosity just to see if it will work, or if I can make it work. Putting a Corvair engine in a homebuilt airplane for example. Another half of what i do is out of necessity, cutting firewood so I don't freeze my patooty off. And another half of what I do is for the fun of it and to make a buck. HAPPY NEW YEAR everybody.

It's a Jeep. That's what they're for. If I wanted to baby it I'd get a Ford. :peek:
  24. I use my neighbors plates when I'm driving. Let him try to explain it. :rotfl2:

    2.5+AX15

It was mostly curiosity. I find it hard to believe that they would only make this combination for one vehicle, the 90's Dakota considering the way Detroit likes to maximize the use and minimize the cost. Anyway I like the 2.5 engines and feel the AX15 is the best tranny considering cost, availability and durability.
