tons of ?s looking for answers. HELP!!

My '87 Metric Ton 4.0L did Pete. Rob L. -
Get a big prybar between the engine and the pan, and give it hell. BFH works great too. Additionally, some members have had great luck with the "gasket remover" and just spraying it on the outside egdes and letting it sit, will make the pan just fall off. Rob L.

Roger, that just linked me to your GL4X4 feedback profile. Rob L. :dunno:

Get the VIN... If it has a "66" in the VIN, its the eliminator package... And I am not talking about the serial number... It should go something like 1J7FT"66"XXXXXXXX Means eliminator. Rob L.

What are your plans with the gasket set? Are you going to pull the whole engine? If not, I would just recommend the valve cover, pan, and maybe timing cover if this is on the jeep, but if its not leaking, I wouldn't worry about it. Rob L. -

You could do better on the oil pan gasket. That multi-piece oil pan gasket is a pain in the butt. Felpro makes one that's all one piece, and hassle free. Pic borrowed from MFPDM's build: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=4826&p=250454&hilit=oil+pan+gasket#p250454 Rob L. -
I just tried this with finding my MJ I sold back in '05. Item history is deleted after 90 days, but the history of the feedback doesn't go away. I was able to find the buyer (because he literally said "Now I just have to get the truck" in his rating) and shot him a message. Should be able to ballpark it, and find the account. Won't paypal have a transaction history? Rob L.

Ebay should have a history of it in the feedback. Find the one that applies, and shoot him a message. Rob L.

While we can help you a ton in your build, tech questions-like the questions about the noise, are best placed in the tech section. They will get a ton more attention, and advice. That said, the inspection plate looks ok, but I don't think there was ever supposed to be anything for the exhaust attached to the transmission like that. Rob L.

You should register the VIN. Rob L.

There is an inspection cover, that is made of sheet metal that just bolts on... But could you take some pics from different angles? Rob L.

Few of your pics look shaky and blurry, but I can't blame ya, because I'd barely be able to keep the camera still while screaming like a school girl. Rob L. :D

Sure its a tranny/rear main leak? These things have a habit of leaking at the back of the valve cover, and it runs down the back of the block. From underneath, it looks like a mess. But really, the gasket is under $40 for the valve cover, and super easy. Rob L.

Can't say I do Don. I guess I should re-phrase that... I noticed that it is for sale in my mom's neighborhood, as in town-wise. She lives in a decent area, but I think that bike is worth over half the value of her house... He's probably over on the high-falutin' side of the tracks... Rob L.

Its actually for sale in my hometown, by my mom's house... Crazy looking bike. Rob L.

Must be... I see this in the pics... Dunno anyone else with an MJ with half doors. Rob L. ;)

mj payload & towing capability?

Take 'er easy, keep it out of OD, and you'll be ok. Rob L. -
My pics from back in '04. Bed had rotted out from a drop in bed liner: After cutting off the bed edge, welding in some angle, patching the holes, and primer black. Straight off Ebay: All done: Even found a glove-like fitting toolbox at autozone, and shoe-horned it in. I liked it, and it hid the imperfections in the bed well. Only thing about the ebay special stuff was that the "grit" of the liner was like kitty litter, and very sharp... Gawd forbid you slid or took a quick knee in the back of that thing. :ack: Rob L. :D

I think the RENIX 4.0L that is in your jeep is plenty adequate, and should be able to pull down 20 MPG with good driving in stock form. Rob L.

How far you have to go? Rob L. -
I always wanted a jeep, and when I was 14, had my eyes set out for a CJ/YJ... Quickly realizing that those fetched a premium, I turned away. I had always known about the comanche, thanks to a guy in my mom's neighborhood who had a black '92 Pioneer LWB, with factory longbed roll bar and a grill guard. So I was on the prowl. I got a job making subs and doling out ice cream, and kept an eye out in the papers we got every day for the dining room. First blood was an '89 4.0L AW4 4x4 for $1800. Not being akin to the workings, we brought an older retired aircraft mechanic my mom had as a neighbor. The thing was ROTTEN. Ran like a top, but the heater core was gone, and there wasn't much left. Time passed, and we spotted one one day for sale a few towns over. Red, longbed, AR wheels, with a grandpa cap. Wanted $1500. My mom got a co-worker to come along for the test drive. It was an '86 Base. 2.5L, AX4, decent rust. After a test drive, it needed brake work, and the exhaust had a nasty rattle. The guy who had it went locally by the nick name "Spider". He was the original owner, and had made some modifications, including a sun roof to remedy hail damage, a cassette deck in place of the AM radio (FM was an option in '86), and a huge "good 'ol boy" bug deflector with "Jim Shouck Big Game hunter" sprawled across the front. :shake: He was a character. Real eccentric, and had a crazy lazy eye... One was looking at you, one was scoping out low flying aircraft. :rotf: My mom's co worker said it was worth about $500, and to keep looking. But, I had money this time, and was getting impatient. I called him, and after some not so tough negotiating, picked it up for $1000. A friends mom drove it home with me riding shotgun (I was still 14), and I spent the next summer with the retired aircraft mechanic getting the brakes fixed, the manual steering box tightened, and all the kinks worked out. I got a racerback off a parts truck, slapped that on, and lost the aluminum cap. I ended up selling it on ebay, after a the clutch went out and I was moving out of my mom's place. How I regret that. I would have loved to say I still had my first car, and MJ. If anyone knows the whereabouts of this poor MJ, please let me know. It was last seen on a tow dolly in McHenry, IL, headed to Wisconsin behind an S10, about 5 years ago. EDIT: After posting this, I had the idea to see if ebay records went back that far, and logged on to my mom's old account. Turns out, the record of the feedback from the truck still exists, and the members account is still active. I left a message. It was sold in '05, so I doubt it's still around. I vaguely remember having an issue with a buyer who didn't pick up the truck... I hope this wasn't him. I hope this was the guy who picked it up. Rob L. :(

mj payload & towing capability?
Automan2164 replied to zzze's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yep. No problem... I would suggest an auxiliary trans cooler and temp gauge for any extended hauling trips though... Heat is the AW4's worst enemy, and it likes to get hot while towing. Rob L. -
Not going to lie. I like the sincerity of the guy, and he speaks well, but, umm... I would think that he would get better response not looking like a stoner. :dunno: Just one mans opinion. Rob L.

Aluminum Wheel Refinishing
Automan2164 replied to neohic's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I tried a few things back in the day... I hear that someone had good results with boat and airplane stripper... Like a gel, that you leave on. Takes a few applications, then you have to figure out a way to "re-protect" the wheel. Rob L.
