  1. Whoops, my mistake. The HVAC controls have a different layout than my 92 and the blurry picture posted in the ad made it look similar to my non AC 86 HVAC control. I see it does have AC, but I wonder if it is aftermarket. Here is a new Mopar HVAC control:
  2. Dillon, welcome to the club! I think that truck could be a decent buy, only if it passed my personal inspection. I'd first do my best to find documentation verifying the mileage. The clusters are exceptionally easy to swap out or alter in the MJ and XJ. The steering wheel cover and seat cover also don't resonate with 85k miles in my opinion. The clear side marker lights and shiny speaker grills on the doors are also alarming to me, makes me think a teen may have owned or operated the truck. The rear bumper is a cheap Fey replacement, I'd be curious to know why the original was replaced. Rusted or wrecked? Rust would be my biggest concern with the truck, especially coming from Illinois and having what looks like a relatively fresh coat of paint. The J e e p stickers are missing on the tailgate, the fuel door is painted black and the radio antenna is missing. Check those bed sides, rockers, cab corners, frame between the front and rear spring mounts and floor. It is a non AC truck, in case you missed that. Don't fear the 2.5l. I daily drive my rusted out 86 with the 2.5. At 191k miles she gets me to work and back (17 miles one way) and has even climbed up to 13,500' in Colorado on Mount Antero and did trails like Black Bear Pass without an issue. Just don't expect it to do anything real fast.
  3. I have used Spicer on 4 Jeeps with good results. I used Moog twice on one of those Jeeps and finally gave up on them. You can find the Spicer parts on Amazon for $50 a side.....and they will arrive in 2 days! That 'mechanic' needs fired. Wow.
  4. Fantastic tires  Eagle - I think you would be pleased with the AT3. They stick like glue in the dry, in the rain and in the snow. Quiet and smooth on the road too.
  5. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. And it's killing me! Well, that's not entirely true. I did brake down the Rubi front axle for this truck to determine what was wrong with the locker. Turns out a rear locker was installed up front and the mechanical limited slip shredded itself. I am on the hunt for a new locker now.
  6. I am impressed with the members of CC. On most forums, a political discussion with a wide array of views as presented here would have plunged down the hateful name calling drain :) I think the election would have had a totally different outcome of it was Trump and Bernie on the ticket. Regardless, I am comfortable with the results and look forward to a prosperous few years. I didn't vote for either candidate. I checked the Johnson box. Sure he was a little crazy, but I was really hoping the popular vote this year, would give a 3rd party candidate a chance in 4 years. I knew my vote wasn't against Trump since I was 100% confident Kansas was going red, regardless of my vote. In other news, I was curious about Canada's immigration policy. I filled out the questionnaire and it seems I am not welcome to become a citizen.... apparently my language skills are not up to par.
  7. My wife tells me I have a sickness. I tell her she is right! :)
  8. One of my duties at work is to thumb through a variety to drawings of our buildings to find answers to structural questions. I came across this photographic elevation from 1988 and something immediately caught my eye. Image Not Found The late 80's scene while poorly put together did capture the old (well nearly new then) MJ that started my love for these trucks. Image Not Found It is an '86 with the bold '4x4' graphic on the doors, V6 and a factory hitch. It was the repo truck and ATM maintenance truck for the bank I work at for about 15 years, bought new in '86. Apparently it was a good day since the truck was parked at the bank to be photographed. The MJ was retired and sold to an employee when the bed, rockers and cab corners disappeared. Thought CC would enjoy!
  9. Bump. I am still on the hunt. Thanks!
  10. Nice truck. I bet it is fun to drive! I want that steering wheel! I agree with your sentiments on that front bumper.
  11. My late '91 build '92 had no evidence of a tether.
  12. It is a TBI 2.5L truck. The pulley didn't come with the pump so I assume it could be installed on a serpentine setup with the correct pulley. I ordered the pump with the reservoir attached from Napa.
  13. If you have the Dana44 get a set of 4.10 'thick' gears. Should really wake up your truck and fit without an issue.
  14. I cannot comment on the late model pump/reservoir, but I can say my '86 has the pear shaped reservoir attached to the pump. I had to replace the pump last year as it was leaking and groaning. Pretty uneventful install.
  15. Man I was really disappointed in the WIP cables. They were ALL black! They were built beautifully but for the price I paid I was expecting something that looked correct under the hood. I was so disappointed I put them back in the box, stuck them on the shelf and hadn't thought about them for 2 years. I like these 'Lemon' cables.
  16. It is a nice truck. I'll give them that.
  17. That 'kit' consists of shocks, single rate coil springs, short AALs and centering pins. The 'kit' is far from complete. The most expensive part of the 'kit' is the shocks. If you are getting new shocks why start with such an incomplete pile of parts? You can buy new progressive rate coils and a full length AAL (or other used leaf springs to build a bastard pack). Oh don't forget the centering pins. Still, at 3" of lift you really ought to get brake lines, bumpstops, longer sway bar links and an adjustable trackbar. Using the stock control arms will alter the ride and handling characteristics of the truck, but usable at 3".
  18. I am in need of a non leather wrapped 3 spoke steering wheel, in black. Horn button not necessary. Year doesn't matter. Would need it shipped to Junction City, KS 66441. Let me know what you have! Example wheel:
  19. Build your own kit out of used parts or clearance parts. Build the suspension to suit your needs. 3" coils, shocks, Chevy1500 brake lines, discos or extended link and track bar, up front coupled with AAL or shackle and shocks in rear should come in under your budget with careful shopping.
  20. Ok any reccomendations on brand and how often to change it. I'm hoping to change it Monday as long as my new fill plug is here by then. Sent from my LG-H634 using Tapatalk I assume you got the fluid changed already, but I'll still entertain your questions. I use Mobil 1 in the transmission, the same as I use in the motor, and change it every other year because I do not daily drive the truck anymore. I think a yearly change would suffice in a daily driven truck.
  21. I was looking is valvoline syncromesh any good. I can't seem to find penzoil sycromesh without ordering it and paying a lot for shipping. Sent from my LG-H634 using Tapatalk If the Valvoline bottle says "safe for yellow metals" then YES. If the Valvoline bottle says "GL-5" compatible or the like, then NO. I can not find transmission fluid for the AX5 (same build as the AX15) around home. Thus, I follow Chrysler's recommendation and run a high quality synthetic 10w-30 motor oil. Shifts like butter, is far easier to source and is recommended by Chrysler.
  22. All 6 sets of D30 ball joints I have changed resulted in the same gap. Spicer and Moog did the same thing.

    Make do

I have never used my HiLift jack on the trail, but I have pulled hundreds and hundreds of fence posts out of the ground with it. Looks like I need to add an engine hoist to the arsenal. :)
  24. When I installed 99 XJ seats in my 86 MJ, I did it a little different. I used the XJ bracket/slider and the XJ floor brace that is spot welded to the XJ floor. I mounted the XJ sheet metal floor brace to the floor of the MJ. The rear of the XJ slider/bracket needed bent upwards some to account for the MJ rear floor pan and the MJ needed some bracing to properly secure the seat. The back of the seat does sit about 1" higher than it did in the XJ. Can't compare to the MJ bench since it was sagged to the floor. I don't notice the extra rear height and my passengers never notice. I can slide the seat all the way back and struggle to reach the pedals, which impressed me being 6'3" tall.
  25. No need to drill and tap, you can bleed by hand. This maybe what you refer as 'squeeze bleed'. If this doesn't/didn't work, I'd wager you have an air leak. - Remove the slave from the bell housing. - Unscrew clutch master cylinder cap, make sure fluid is topped off. - Go back under the truck and hold the slave vertical with the rod end pointing down. Gently push and pull the rod to simulate the slave working. Any air in the system will work it's way up to the master. For $150 you could piece together a hydraulic kit from Napa (Clutch master, hose, slave, and brake fluid) for a 95 XJ. This is the route I took on my 86 since I didn't trust those pre bled kits. Even the replacement slave cylinder bought individually won't have a bleed valve and you will need to do the same procedure above.
