I agree again with the 3.4... Jeepcomj went through several transmissions too with the 3800 because it was too much power. But if youre set on the 4.0, get a complete running donor so you can just swap it all over and see what the differences are in the radiator core support in order to swap it over as well.
-
The trans options for the 4.0 were the manual AX-15, which is the good one, the Puegot BA10-5 which is the bad one, and the AW4 automatic. Either the AX-15 or AW4 will be good choices as both are really good transmissions. None of these trannies will bolt to a 2.8. You should have the Chrysler A904 auto in yours, which isnt a bad trans. Its a smaller version of the TF727 and is readily buildable. It was offered behind Chrysler 6's and small V8's for many years. One option I'm not sure if you have thought of is swapping in a GM 3.1 or 3.4 V6. This would give you better power and reliabilty without having to go through all the problems of a 4.0 swap into an 86 as it is pretty much bolt in. You could keep the GM fuel injection as well if youre ambitious. There are writeups to make it a stand alone system and easy swap in from a complete donor like a Camaro or Firebird.

'86 Comanche Purchasing Advice
dasbulliwagen replied to Dillithium's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The stock drive train isn't bad at all. There are a few tricks you can do to the 2.5 to get a little more umph. www.4bangerjp.com has tons of info and tech specific to that motor. Good luck. We hope you get it! -
255/75R17 Goodyear Wrangler SRA. They measure right at 32 Inches tall.
-
The stock Jk 17 inch aluminum rims and Goodyear tires, I think they look like the rubicon Moab style, 5 spoke.
-
You guys have me discouraged now. I got a set of 5 new JK takeoffs for $200 and was planning on running them. My calculations in the past put running 32's with 4:10 gears to be nearly equivalent to having 28's with 3:55 gears. This was according to a chart I saw on here somewhere. I did recently get a set of lower profile tires to put on the JK rims if I was too disappointed by the lack of power of the 32's. I knew 31's will work relatively stock, why would 32's be that much different?

Shackle Relocation Brackets For A Mj?
dasbulliwagen replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you need relocation brackets, I would say you have other issues, maybe broken or badly sagged springs. I would look into that before modding stuff that might not be a problem. -
And by modifying the body, he means extensive cutting, welding and fabrication... so really its not a realistic option. Sounds like you got fixed up anyways.

Mine also had no P/S from the factory, I swapped a set in from an 86 2.8 setup, just had to get engine specific pump and lines.

88 Comanche Vs 86 Comanche
dasbulliwagen replied to ckjeep's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The AC dash should also swap over, just keep the HVAC controls from the donor and put them in place of the old ones, and keep your 4.0 cluster, I'm not sure the V6 one will work correctly with the 4.0 electronics. The rest should be fine. Suspension and axles are all them same. Keep an eye out on the rear axle on the 86, it could be the rare AMC Corporate 20, which would be a great find, though being a 4 speed truck its probably unlikely. -
Has Anyone Lifted A 2Wd Comanche?
dasbulliwagen replied to benjy_26's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Air cooled VW Beetles from the 60's and 70's had a front sway bar. Those cars weighed around 1500 lbs tops for the later models. If they benefited from one there must be something to it, especially for a heavier vehicle. If there was no benefit, the mfg's would not install them. The added cost and weight make it it a loss in profit and fuel milage if there is no benefit. Just my 2 cents, Ill stick with mine. -
Need Help Finding A Oem Ac Bypass Pulley.
dasbulliwagen replied to Zebvance's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Not sure if the 4.0 is like my 2.5, but when I did mine, there was a fake pulley for the P/S that it didnt have, but for the AC the belt routing was just different, and it didnt have a dummy pulley there. WHen I added the AC and P/S I just added the P/S pump and compressor bracket and routed the new belt appropriately. -
Do you have any better pics? Looks like you have no bumper at all... or is that the joke?

Better Then Oem Suspenion In Rear
dasbulliwagen replied to EzRam's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have a set of modified JK take offs on mine and have no sway issues. Sounds like the coilovers will be just what you need though. -
Better Then Oem Suspenion In Rear
dasbulliwagen replied to EzRam's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Some good new gas charged shocks would help you greatly. The only time Ive seen sway issues like that is if the shocks are bad. Some new stock or Metric ton springs from Hellcreek would be the next step if it were mine -
Wheel/tire Size Questions
dasbulliwagen replied to Reedtech's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The steel wheels from a Dodge Charger, Magnum, Chrysler 300 are also bolt on with correct backspacing and close to stock tire height. The center hub is also the right size. I have seen these used sucessfully on Naxja, and almost had a set for myself a while back. They are 17" wheels in steel with a bullethole pattern. The 18" ones from the police cars can also be used and have a decent looking 5 spoke pattern. I'm not sure about the aluminum versions for those cars, but it would seem to extrapolate that they would also work. -
Also have the 87 2.5! Gotta love it. Welcome home!

703 Fuel Injectors
dasbulliwagen replied to onlyinajeep726's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
All the above vehicles should be the 4 cylinder versions of their models. I'm not sure the v6 versions would be the same or not. All those models had the same 4 cylinder as the neon available in them. -

Could also be limited by the shocks being too short -
Trans gear ratios don't mean much to most people but diff ratio info is good to know if you plan like many of us, to ho with bigger tires. Oil weights and types will be good info for ongoing maintenance purposes. I was thinking a section with bolt on upgrades woulb be good, bit that is a lot of info. Maybe just a paragraph with a few examples and then a list of links to upgrade pages. My 2 cents.
