How much $ do you have tied up in your Comanche?
dasbulliwagen replied to 91Pioneer's topic in The Pub
I haven't really added it up but I'm guessing $2000 or less. That includes purchase price of $250, $125 for a parts truck, $100 for my first set of aluminum wheels, $200 for my set of 5 new JK takeoffs, $200 for adapters, $100 for a new clutch, and then money here and there for my AC conversion, p/s conversion, longer brake lines, elec fan conversion, $40 for 11 gallons of NOS Mopar diesel engine oil... Yeah still under $2000. That doesn't include all the free stuff... 235 BFG A/T's, front brake pads, front and rear JK shocks, Procomp adjustable track bar, WJ cooling fan, diff and trans fluids, coolant, Waggy doors fenders and front clip, larger sway bar, Waggy radio, front skid plate, cold air intake.... And whatever else. The only things untouched on it are the engine (long block) and the gas tank. I think I'm doing OK. -
Welcome to the club. If you want to post or pm me your VIN I can look it up through Chrysler for you. Can't wait to see pics. The more the merrier.

Power steering swap
dasbulliwagen replied to ownedueasy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Don't use the ZJ pitman arm. It drops too far and will cause bump steer. You'll need an XJ MJ p/s pitman arm. -
The ax5 will bolt right up. You'll need to have your flywheel neutrally balanced by a machine shop as the new 3.4 is internally balanced and the 2.8 wasn't.

I've read somewhere before that its possible to keep the efi as a standalone system without doing too much work as long as you're comfortable with wiring. Do some research you should be able to find it.

Diesel (TDi) conversion discussion & research
dasbulliwagen replied to A-man930's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Promaster has been for sale since spring with the 3.6 Pentastar V6 and 6 speed auto. The diesel version was just recently released and has a single dry clutch automated manual trans. Both are front wheel drive. The small Pro master City will be out after the first of the year and have the Chrysler 2.4 with the multi air cylinder head and 9 speed auto. I'm not sure about what the turbo is. They didn't get into that in the training class. And I don't have the book in front of me to give you the HP number. -
Diesel (TDi) conversion discussion & research
dasbulliwagen replied to A-man930's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I just went to school on the new Dodge Promaster 3.0 liter 4 cylinder just now being released in the states. Its not a VM Motori engine but a Fiat industrial engone. Seems like a fairly compact engine and is said to weigh just over 500 lbs with 295 lb ft of torque. I know this probably won't be a swap option for a while yet but might be something to look into in the future. -

I got a new pro comp adjustable track bar for free and installed it on my MJ. It has a heim at the body aide with the adjuster there. Screwed all the way in is just about right on my truck that has 4wd springs and an extra isolator. I see they go for $200 and says its good up to 4 inches lift. I've had no issues with mine installed for several years now. -
'86 S10, MJ 2.8 engines
dasbulliwagen replied to jimoshel's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There is a kit out there to put the Holly Weber 2 bbl progressive carb (same as used on some Ford's) on the 2.8. Its a much better carb than the Rochester. Might be something for you to look up. I put a kit like that on my old FSJ Waggy 4.2 after its original carb fel apart. I've also used them on air cooled VW's a couple times. -
UPGRADED front end/steering components
dasbulliwagen replied to projectMANCHI's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I got mine from a v8 zj. But researching on here I found someone say ALL ZJ's had the better ratio. You might research it more before buying. -

does it matter what year its from? It doesn't matter what year or model as long as it is a ZJ. -
4 headlight conversion
dasbulliwagen replied to Jakesjeepmj1988's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
You might try some body shops. They usually have special suppliers that get them small parts like adjusters and things like that to repair stuff with. -

The ZJ steering box has a quicker ratio too and is bolt in. I just bought one myself after reading that others here have done it. I've yet to have time to install it but have read good reviews. -
I think this qualifies in both cost and rarity. A real AEV Brute. it has a local adress too, though Ive never seen it before. It came into the shop the other day for an oil change. The chassis has been extended, and is built to a very high quality. Theres a full size spare up under the bed too, Comanche style! Too bad it doesnt have a hemi though, That would be the icing on the cake. Enjoy!

Not to get off track, but a pic of said Lada would be great for those of us who don't know what they are. -
Yes CANDY colors are nice, but very expensive and hard to paint. Candies are generally a 3 stage paint. A solid base coat often in a heavy metallic silver or gold, and tinted clear coat to give the effect, and a regular clear top coat. This type of paint is generally reserved for high dollar custome or hot rods. If a repair is needed you generally have to repaint the whole vehicle as a 3 stage is almost impossible to match if painted panel by panel. Just FYI.

Has anyone tried a set of JK Front Coils on a MJ?
dasbulliwagen replied to CGCWO's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I looked at doing this when I converted to 4x4. Unsprung the coils were about the same length and had about the same wire diameter. I didn't want to have them net no lift over stock 4wd springs and not wanting to do the job twice I decided against them. I too have a few sets of them sitting around just in case. -

If you have to ask, you can't afford it. -
I'm just down the road from you in Asheboro. This site had been a huge resource for me and my 87 as I'm sure it will be for you. Let us know how this fix works out. These trucks deserve to be kept on the road.
