You should have a rectangular flange by the trans cross member. This is where the cat mounted before going into the muffler. If your pipes are in good shape just buy a universal cat or universal high flow cat and have it welded in. No big deal really.

New Comanche owner question
dasbulliwagen replied to Scalped's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes 31x10.50R15 will fit. But for an unlifted 2wd I think P235/75R15 would be better. -
Sounds like you're skipping second and going into fourth.

The stock Chevy shackles are the same length as mj ones. Might be easier to find the Chevy's.
-
Yes. Just use the 87 cluster.

I'm sure the trailhawk will look better, same goes for the Cherokee. But I don't think at this point I could ever say that I would like to own one, especially with no manual trans option.

We just got our first one into the dealership. All I have to say is... No sir. I don't like it.

The axle shafts advertised are to replace the original failure prone 2 piece shafts as found in the CJ's. The MJ 20 already has one piece shafts so its not an issue.

2.5L Bogs down REALLY bad
dasbulliwagen replied to Comangi's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I have 32 inch JK take offs on mine with almost no lift and 4:10 gears and 5 speed. My earlier calculations figured 32 inches with 4:10's and only to 4th gear to be very close to the original 3:55 gears and stock tires to 4 the gear. If I were you I wouldn't ever worry about using 5th unless you were on a long downhill run. I don't and I don't have too many issues getting around and my fuel milage is nowhere near as bad as yours. But then again I'm not lifted. I love the 2.5's but I think if you want to go with bigger tires you'll need a 4.0 swap and bigger axles. Keep your expectations low and you'll be OK. -
Transmission Compatability
dasbulliwagen replied to swsws1's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
IF you could find a bell housing to mate the ax15 to the 2.5 you'll also most likely need a different rear driveshaft as well. The bell housing is super rare only found in Dodge Dakotas. Assuming you have 3:55 gears with the 4 speed. Without changing to 4:10 rear axle your fifth gear in an ax5 might not be much use. Just keep the 4 speed and keep on trucking. -
Adding A/C to an 87'
dasbulliwagen replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Its a TBI 2.5. Renix XJs are rarer in the JY with every passing day and the 88' I pulled the dash harness from is a tempting candidate. Thanks for the input Dasbulliwagen. For the under dash parts I swapped the whole HVAC box. I didn't even disconnect the heat and air controller. The wiring from the new box came over to a connector behind the radio area. The extra wires needed were already on the existing harness. I didn't need to do the whole dash harness. Just that section to the box. I think your 88 you got should all go right in and plug up. Add what's needed under the hood and you're good to go. -
Rear drum brake to disc brake?
dasbulliwagen replied to Jackrabbit41's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Rear brakes could be helped as well by unhooking the rear load sensing prop valve and tying it up to the 1 o'clock position. Or by eliminating that rear valve altogether. This fix will give full braking power to the rear brakes. -
Adding A/C to an 87'
dasbulliwagen replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Is yours a 2.5 or a 4.0? When I did my 87 2.5 I used an 86 donor and all of it was plug and play under the dash. The 2.5 has a "dealer installed AC" connector under the hood over the left inner fender. I used the downloadable 88 FSM to build what I needed off of that. The compressor wire was already in place and a couple other connectors I can't remember were too. As for the compressor and lines I just bought what fit my application and then added adapter fittings to run r134a. I'm not sure about any of the newer systems being any more efficient or not though. They are all roughly the same and work the same way. I wouldn't worry about finding a newer system. Having a donor that will plug right up seems more important to me. -
Don't forget your track bar. You can get play from that as well.

Electric fan temp sensor location?
dasbulliwagen replied to Comanchemodder's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I used the heater bypass hose going to the intake manifold and installed a brass T with barb fittings and the correct size adapter for the sensor. I cut it into that hose. Its been working fine for several years. -
I saw where one person used the original foot brake cable and looped it under the seat then connected it to the handbrake. Might be an option for you.

The Commander is just a heavier slower WK. They are on the same platform. They were built to compete with the Hummers. It must have worked seeing where Hummer is at today.

What plug is this unplugged?
dasbulliwagen replied to 88mjblue's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There are probably lots of unused connectors on your Jeep. Depends on what options you have. -

An mpi throttle body will not take the place of a TBI throttle body. You would have to have a 91 or newer 2.5 for this to work. Sorry. -
A WJ front beam is not a bolt in. But the knuckles will swap with the better brakes with only correct ball joints installed

Calling people idiots isn't going to get you very far in this forum. But just to give you the benefit of the doubt, in the 7 Years I've been on this forum I've never seen any talk of weight distribution. Its not an issue for wheelin or daily driver use. But if its like most pickups' it's biased toward the front for load carrying ability.

If you haven't been there yet the International Full Sized Jeep Association should be a good resource. Love that truck. Good luck with it. Keep us updated.

I can't believe I never saw this thread before today. I too love a red interior. But you can't go wrong with black.

Mine did something like that till I replaced the o2 sensor. Mine had sat for 4 years and nothing fixed its running issue till I put the o2 sensor in it.
