  1. Ive been submitting here for a while, finnally got around to taking pics and going through photobucket. easier than I thought. here's my baby, 1987 Sportruck 2.5, AX4, 2wd, 3:55 R+P I'm in the process of converting to 4x4 with 4:10 gears. Ive already added the AC and Power steering, and added a cold air intake I had laying around after finding out I needed to lose the airbox to have room for the other stuff, and I think it looks cool, though any increase in power is little to none. here's pics of the cold air, and my Dodoge caravan power steering resevior. My donor truck is a 1986 2.8 V6 4x4 with bucket seats, AC, PS, tilt column, and rust free. The PO bought it running and driving with a knocking engine, imagine that in a 2.8! The body is rough in a few places but very solid. I think this may turn into a future project with who knows what kind of motor...maybe a V8???? The owner of the dealer I work for has a 1988 Comanche Olympic Edition 4.0 4x4 SWB...its been having brake problems for years and hes now trying to get me to see if I can fix it...I'm not sure though... too many hands been in it! I told him Id swap the MC assy from my 86 to see if it would help..we'll see. here's the pics of the 88. And we have this little beauty for sale on the lot! Any takers??? And Ill throw this in cause I like it! Image Not Found And here is my other baby... Ghia Marie...riding in the MJ, she likes it because she can see out all the windows!
  2. When I was doing that same swap. I looked at an 88 4.0 to compare brakets to go on my 87 2.5. The brackets are different and don't take into effect the little shock that mounts between the motor and frame. I ended up spending $75 to get all the brackets off of another 2.5 from the junkyard ( they pulled ). And while they bolted up to my 2.5, none of the rest of the stuff was the same...I have no idea what year 2.5 they took those parts off of, but I made it work with a little parts swapping/robbing/grinding. I wish you luck!
  3. What city are you from in Michigan? And what school? I'm originally from Battle Creek. I really don't miss the rusty vehicles. I used to buy a new winter beater every fall so I could put away my nice car for the winter. I didnt really have jeeps back then, but one of my winter beaters was a 1987 Grand Wagoneer 4.2 Selectrac. Poor rustly little bastard. I found out the frame was about rusted in two, so I got rid of it. I loved that full size jeep...would love to have another if I could afford the gas for it!
  4. Welcome ! Nice start you got there. What are your plans for it??
  5. JK changeover was 2007, first year for the 3.8!!!!
  6. I sure wish I knew what to do with all of my rust free MJ's! I'm just lousy with 'em. :rotf:  :rotf:  :rotf:
  7. Another thing Ive always heard good things of is Water wetter, an additive to put in your cooling system that helps the water transfer heat faster....something to do with breaking down the waters surface tension to allow more contact between the water molecules and the inner surface of the radiator. They sell that brand or something like it at most parts stores or performance shops.
  8. Newcastle Brown Ale, or Negro Modello......good shtuff!!!
  9. Thanks for the support guys, replaced the started and hoped for the best. They left hopefully never to be heard from again, I'm just waiting for them to complain about the exhast leak it had! :brows: :brows: :brows:
  10. Mineral spirits, or laquer thinner is the only things Ive ever used. Cheap and you can get them anywhere. good luck!
  11. The Cv shaft is a shaft and Cv joint built together, it is one assembly with the boot and everything. To replace pull off the caliper, the rotor, then get to the backside and with a 13mm 12 point socket on a 1/2" drive wrench remvove the three bolts holding the hub to the knuckle. They will be tight, then carefully knock the hub assy off. This may be tough too if it is rusty at all. The hub assy is the wheel bearings and wheel seals all together in a single unit so be careful removeing it if you arent putting new ones on. Soemtimes they will just knock right off, other times youll need a little encouragement to get them off, but one the hub is off, the axle assy will slide right out, slide your new one in being careful not to mess up the axle seal deep inside the axle and put eberything back together. Good luck!
  12. Or if you want to just get a new ZJ CV shaft assy from autozone or somewhere, they are selling new ones now for the same or less than rebuilts, I think around $100. CV shafts never came stock in an MJ. Some one probably just had one lying around and decided to thow it in there to replace a bad u Joint axle. Either way will work.
  13. 3000 rpm sustained will not hurt a thing for any period of time, at highway speed the load on the engine really isnt that much, just enough to keep up speed and combat aerodynamics. My Hyundai Tuscon has stock 5:37 gearing with the 2.0 4 cyl and runs around 3500 at 70 MPH which I run across country on a regular basis. I would be more worried it the rpms was in the 4-5 range. 3000 will not hurt anything.
  14. Try Acellerated Motion cam and lifter kits. I can't remember where I saw them from, but they seemed to have some fairly big cams available, out of Canada IIRC eh? www.amotion.com/amcams.html Call them up and see what they say!
  15. Had a customer bring in their 06 Grand Cherokee the other day, wouldnt start, the whole thing covered in carolina red mud, open the hood, and the whole hemi has an inch of red mud all over it. Well, I hook up the jump box, get it running and notice the battey light on in the dash... its not charging. I get my flashlight out, move the air ducts and look at the alternator which is packed pull of mud and must have burned or ground down the inner working of it. We order them a new alt and tell them there will be a charge to hose this thing off so we can work on it. I get the alt replaced and everything is working so I pull it out and park it thinking I was done with it and these people could go back to Raliegh where they came from. I noted on the repair order that because of the mud intrusion, they could have other problems pop up. The customer comes in today to get it after driving for an hour and a half, turn the key and the starter just spins freely! Not engaging! And somehow its my fault! Its my fault they buried their soccer mom unmodified hemi Jeep in the mud at the Uwharrie state park! So tommorow I get to replace the starter on it, still with an inch of mud covering all of its underpinnings. I can't wait! (note the sarcasm) I just hope nothing else goes wrong with it till after they leave, because somethingelse will go wrong with it. Those new Cherokees may be trail rated, but its not mud bog rated. Its not bury the hood and front end in the swamp rated. It not STUPID rated!!! Freaking preppy a-holes! IF YOU WANT A TRAIL JEEP.... BUILD ONE!!!!!!!!
  16. I need to save this whole thread before it gets deleted!!!!!!
  17. I have never tried this or heard of it being done, but the ZJ is very similar in a lot of ways to the MJ/XJ. It should just be plug and play. Search the threads on here though, I seem to remember reading that it would be best to keep the original MJ valve and plug one of the ports in order to do away with the rear valve, though I can't tell you which one. Good luck!
  18. I'm working on this project myself. Youll need the braketry to mount the compressor and remount the alternator, all the high and low pressure lines, receiver dryer, condensor, the compressor itself, the HVAC housing assembly including the metering block. You will have to pull the dashboard completely out and the old heater housing assy, and replace it with the HVAC housing assy. In mine, all the wiring was already in the truck, just unused, there is a connector for the whole assy behind the radio. after mounting everything up, youll need to find the wiring under the hood for the compressor and the low pressure swith and wire them up. then have the system vacuumed real good, before charging with the correct amout of R134a refrigerant and the proper amount of refrigerant oil. Oh yeah and did I meantion youll need a kit to convert everything over to R134a refrigerant, which is no big deal, just a couple of adapters. You should also make sure you get a NEW receiver dryer if you are stealing parts from a donor. Not difficult, just time consuming. Good luck!
  19. Kelly Blue book only goes back to 1989 but for an 89 long bed 4cyl 2wd with ac and ps, excellent value is only $1860. You go back to 1986 which that truck is and I'm sure it would be lower. The price is too high for what it is. If you could get him down closer to $1500 it would be worth it.
  20. When doing the Power steering/ air conditioning conversion on my 2.5, I found that I had ordered the wrong PS resevior, so I went in to the parts dept and grabbed a resevior from a caravan, and realized that the place I needed to mount the res was where the airbox was. Ive had this cold air intake I took off of a late model Mazda 3 a couple years ago, sitting around, so i decided to see if I could make it work. I found that removing the hose part coming off the top of the TB that the cold air tube adapter fit right to it, so I cut it to length, made a support for it and have been running it now for a few weeks. I don't really think it made any difference in power, but it seems to be a little happier/peppier in general though so who knows. I also have 3:55's and will be going to 4:10 with my 4x4 conversion very soon. I can't wait to what kind of difference it will make!
  21. I wasnt really looking specifically for an MJ, but I was looking at getting a cheap truck to be able to haul stuff when needed. I had my sights set on an old ford. I had told everyone I know th keep an eye out for a cheap truck for me, and then it appeared. My friend Chip has a buddy that was selling everything to move across country, and had this one owner 87 with 336,000 miles on it for $250.00. I was told that it had been sitting for about 4 years. So I went to look at it, and the OO hooked up the battey and fired it up! I was soo suprised. It didnt run very good, but ran enough for me to be able to drive it home. I put I don't know how many bottles of fuel sys cleaner through it, and a complete tune up, and the more I drove it the better it ran. Ive always liked the MJ's and now that I have one, I don't think I could ever be without at least some sort of Jeep truck. What I would really have loved to have found would have been an M715. I have always wanted one....still do! Right now my MJ gets used as part time DD, hauler, and after the 4x4 conv. possibly some light wheeling! You gotta love em!
  22. Sounds like a great build, wish I could do as much as youre doing on yours. Painless Wiring has kits for street rods and custom builds. I'm not sure of their pricing anymore though as I havent looked anything up from them in maybe 10-15 years. There are other comanies doing the same thing though, I'm sure you could find some competeing kits that would at least give you the groundwork to run everything else off of. Good luck with the build!
  23. 341,000!!! Secind owner, rust free....read it and weap boys!
  24. Giffer... where did you get the info that Fiat is a division of Nissan?? I don't think that is correct. I do know that Chrysler has a deal with Nissan right now for a couple of vehicles in the near future, and that that particular deal has nothing to do with the Fiat deal, but I do not beleive the Fiat is a division of Nissan. Wouldnt it just be then that Nissan is taking over Chrysler??? I don't think so. Fiat is its own company based in Italy, and some rebadged Fiats are exactly what Chryco needs to get their CAFE standards in line with everyone else. I for one can't wait to see what they would bring to the states!
