New to Comanche Club, Bought an 86
dasbulliwagen replied to ride172's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you have a 2.8 auto, you may already have 4:56 gearing there already. That would need to be confirmed though, so switching to an AX4 or 5 with 4:10 will not help. Finding a 3.4 and just swapping all parts over will be easiest in my opinion. And buy a 4 barrel intake and holley 390cfm 4 bbl carb for the swap, and youll be in heaven! -
leaf spring question
dasbulliwagen replied to man of la manche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Normal is 4, metric tonne is 5. -
Seems like a waste to me.... where is this truck going to be when douchebag losses interest in it? Nobody else is going to want an MJ like that for daily use, and like previous poster said, if he does have a cover for it in the rain it will leak like a mother because it is a homemade job..... just a waste of a perfectly good MJ!

lack of power..
dasbulliwagen replied to tjjeejeepcomanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
An 86 4cyl auto SHOULD have 4:56 gearing already. And the clip on the TB cover will not help your power situation, but will keep dirt out better. Assuming you already have 4:56 gears, and are still down on power, you may need to look into other things like a cold air intake tube, removing the engine fan and installing an electric one, throttle body spacer, new injector, new 02 sensor, maybe gut the cat converter ( as to leave the impression to others that you still have a good cat ), free flowing muffler, maybe a header as available from Clifford performance... stuff like that. Ive done all this to mine except the header, and 4:10 gears instead of 4:56. Mine went from tired dog at 336,000 miles when I got it to half way peppy driver at 343,000 miles, though mine is not an auto. If your auto trans slips too much it could be part of your problem too, though I know nothing about the auto trans in any of our trucks. If I were you, I would also have a good compression test and cylinder leakdown test done before I put too much time and effort into this truck.... an engine may be what you need after all. Good luck and let us know what you do! -
Wow your' the first person I've heard from thats even from TN lol. Nice to have someone who knows about this place :D Actually, I'm from Madisonville, KY. About an 1 hr 45 min from you. Used to come to Gallatin twice a year to race at Lock 4. Great place to ride and I like the area. My son is going there right now, hope it pans out, I couldn't sway him toward something else. What do you do, if you don't mind me asking? I went to NADC for auto body repair... worked in body shops for a couple of years and got asthma real bad. Didnt do anything auto related till 6 years ago, went back to Community college for auto mechanics, and have been working as a Chrysler dealership tech for 4 years now. Sorry about hijacking!

Ford has been carrying this body style since 1993. My cousin actully bought one that year and drove it up till last year when the rust belt cancer finally got to be too much for her to continue to upkeep. My dad bought one new in 1996 that he is still driving, but I don't see it lasting him too much longer. I'm trying to talk him into a new full size Dodge... I can get him my employee discount here at the dealership, but I think he will probably drive it a couple more years to try to save money. And Mazda is no longer carrying the B series trucks as of either this year or last year, though the dated Ranger is still here. That platform is in serious need of a complete redesign. They are good trucks though, I have to say, but one thing I noticed is this model has less room in it than the Ford body style that it replaced... being a tall guy it is a big issue.

WILL YOU PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BALANCE YOUR WHEELS?????? I mean like proffesionally! Ive seen DW cases taken care of just by doing this alone! I know though your truck has had serious issues, but if you would just balance your wheels, it would be soo much better! Edit... just saw you got new tires! SA-WEET!

If everything is tight and you still get a rattle, your cat converter could be shot inside allowing peices of the converter element to bouce around insaide the case. If all else is tight, tap on the converter with a rubber mallet and see if it rattles inside. Good Luck!

Gallatin? Isnt that just north of Nashville? I went to Nashville Auto Diesel College back in 91-92. I got know the area pretty well at the time....chasing girls and playing pool all night. Its a nice area. Welcome to the club!

Part number 83500358 USA Dealership network, National parts warehouse shows to have three in stock. The part is no longer in production. There are two US dealers showing to have them in stock as well. So thats 5 total OEM engine shock packages still available in the US. I'm not sure if Britan dealerships work off of the same parts network or not, but if they do you could get one from a dealer there off of this parts network. List price is showing to be $104 USD Let me know if you want the names of the two US dealers that have the part in stock, maybe they would arrange international shipping for you! Doesnt hurt to ask!

Sorry, no gold and no woodgrain... I want to keep it simple and clean looking, will eventually repaint it white, maybe with a silver lower two tone, who knows.

How do you change the door pins?
dasbulliwagen replied to trapperbb's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I hope you gut the bushings too, it may not be a pin issue at all, but the brass bushings that the pin goes into. -
Is my frankenmotor dying?
dasbulliwagen replied to the_wizard_of_fire's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
4.0 wasnt produced for the 86 model year. I hope someone didnt swap in a 2.8 V6 drivetrain! We need more details about your truck, engine, trans, 2 0r 4 wheel drive.... all that stuff. -
I tried running the VIN through Chrysler... too old to bring any info up. I think my cutoff for running MJ vins is like 88 or 89. I can pull my 87 up, but it doesnt have any details like the later models do. There is another site that may be able to translate some but I don't know whay it is, Someone else may chime in with it.

I'm not sure really how it works, but if they total it, they own the truck and it will go to salvage weather you want it to or not, and you would then have to buy it back from them for salvage value..... though this scenario may only be if you have full coverage on the truck. Many states will let you either go full coverage, or just liability.... if you don't have full coverage, and the truck is considered totalled, you may just get a check for $400. can't remember what they call this but thats what happened to me when I lived in Michigan and totalled out an old rusty Form Maverick I had. You may need to research this to have your facts straight. Good Luck

These need to go seperately into the DIY section, so more people can reference them when needed down the road. Good stuff! keep up the good work!

whats my best option for engine
dasbulliwagen replied to 86customanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I agree. You need a second opinion on this. The 2.5 is a tough engine, and if you arent hearing any knocking noises from the lower end, it can probably be fixed with the electronics like the injector, o2 sensor, coolant sensor..... etc. Call around to a bunch of independant shops and ask if theres anyone there that has good experience with Jeeps of this vintage. Most of the independants have old timers that have seen it all. Good luck and let us know what you figure out. -
Ive done a couple of things to it this week. Monday I realized my electric fan wasnt working. Good thing its still cold outside, I checked the fuse, it was OK but the fuse holder had melted and the fuse itself was slightly melted and out of shape. So I traced out the lines and found my fan connector to the harness had melted also and was not making contact anymore. I pulled the connector housing out and put the wire ends back together and taped it up and it works again, but still not sure why. I need to re do the connections now and see if I can adjust the fan controller to come on ata ahotter temp, maybe the fan won't stay on soo much. I also installed a new Flowmaster 50 series muffler and gutted and sleeved the converter, welded everything up and it sounds almost like the old muffler. But I still havent driven it on the street under load, so I'm curious to see if the sound is any different and if I have any more power!

whats my best option for engine
dasbulliwagen replied to 86customanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
There a company near Vancouver BC called Accelerated Motion that has a selection of cams for the 2.5, website is amotion.com. It says they are temporarily closed but the catalog will be updated in March and company back open in April. Theres a lot of good info there too on cam selections. When their catalog was up they had a selection of cams for the 2.5 from stock to wild. So far they are the only place Ive found that still lists cams for the 2.5, but if anyone else knows someone else who still does Id be very interested to know. -
Installed my Flowmaster 50 series today, also gutted and sleeved the cat conv and welded everything up. Sounds about like my original muffler with the back end falling out, but maybe a touch louder but still mellow. I have yet to drive it on the street yet so havent heard yet how it will sound under load, or if it has made any difference in the amount of power on tap.

whats my best option for engine
dasbulliwagen replied to 86customanche's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
If you don't have the time or money for a 4.0 swap, which would mean engine, tranny, harness, driveshafts, radiator, core support.... lot of work. I know of at leat 1 0r 2 used 2.5 engines in the classifieds section for sale, just drop a used engine in and hit the road, you can slowly rebuild your old one in the meantime if thats what you want and have it ready in case the used one goes. I am in the process of doing exactly that myself, bought a used running 2.5 on here for $100 with injector and all accesories, it will get rebuilt with a few performance upgrades, and in case anything happens to my current 2.5, which I have no reason to beleive anything will, Ill be ready. Its a really good engine if you don't mind that type of thing. You know what you say to guys that have really big engined cars, or super fast expensive sports cars??? " Sorry about your p3n1s! " -
I'm glad he won too.... the dems have been sick with power for the last year and it finnally seems that people are wising up. Checks and balances.... it always evens out.
