If I remember this right (too lazy to look it up) one of the 4x4 mags tested a bunch of axles and the shafts from the 8.8 not only outperformed the Dana 44, it outperformed the testing machine. :D

Latches are bolted on. Torx screw I think. :hmm: Haven't looked at them in a while, but I've removed them from my 88 and 90.

If he thought 8 hours was boring, I don't imagine he'll survive the road trip from NY to Cali. :D And for the record 8 hours is nothing. My house is 24 hours of driving from Moab (probably turned out to be more than that since my truck couldn't always do the speedlimit) and it was just me and the dog with no radio (couldn't hear it over the road noise). Disney Word is 19 hours away. My sister lives 12 hours away. And if I remember right, The Badlands is about 10 and Rockport offroad park is 11 and change. But as much as I love the open road, I do wish I lived closer to some good wheeling. :( sigh...

I love following the short Jeeps. :D I may not do the turns as smoothly, but I'll be danged if I won't follow wherever they lead. Although with that minispool up front the tight turns can be a bee-atch (multi-point turns are, um, "not unheard of"). And now I have the boggers sticking out in the rear, catching tree trucks as I go... And that one time I just pushed over the dead tree rather than try to go around it... :D The tighter the trail, the bigger the challenge. But I generally don't wheel at night. I bet that would make it exponentially harder.

Underneath the dash on the drivers side is a small plastic box that has wires going in one end and wires coming out the other. It is usually attached to the Jeep with velcro. This is the wiper control module. Replacing it exorcized (sp?) the demons in the psychotic wipers of my 90.

There was a 45mph sticker on the last open top U-haul trailer I wanted to rent. :( I ended up just borrowing my buddies trailer instead. It was a 12 hour drive to my destination at 70 mph, I sure as heck wasn't going to attempt that at only 45. (and after inspecting the U-haul trailer, I wasn't about to go any faster than 45 with it)

I don't know of anyone that's actually done it. It's always been the theory that you could convert an AX-4 to have the overdrive, but it was always also assumed that it'd be easier or cheaper to just go buy an AX-5. :dunno:

Are you sure about that? Maybe it was a typo. The 27 spline 8.25 is only marginally stronger than a Dana 35. The 31 spline 8.8 is waaay stronger than a Dana 35 and the shafts are stronger than a Dana 44. Even the 28 spline 8.8 is much stronger than a Dana 35. As to C-clips, it's a common thing to say it's poor, but that's not due to weakness in the C-clip itself, but rather it's a weakness of the design. When you bust an axle shaft, the clip part gets retained inside the diff just fine, but the rest of the axle shaft is allowed to wander right out of your axle tube and it takes the tire with it. :eek: With a non-C-clip design, the tire and outer part of the axle shaft are retained even if the axle shaft snaps. But if you get a 31 spline Explorer 8.8, the C-clip design is essentially a moot point seeing as it's very VERY hard to snap one of those shafts. :D

The highway patrol tends to frown upon that method of towing. :D

Nothing special came with the Metric tonne package. But if you want an upgrade in strength over your Peugeot ranny, the AX-15 fits the bill. Or even stronger is the NV-3550 that came in the Jeeps 2000 and newer. The Exporer 8.8 is a very nice and very strong axle. It has the same 5 on 4.5" wheel bolt pattern and it just a hair more narrow than a Dana 35. 95-00 Explorers also came with rear disk brakes. C-clips are one way to hold an axle shaft into the axle housing. Both bolt to 4.0L.
