  1. I designed and built my bumpers/suspension/crossmembers/rollbar/rockerguards/etc mostly with just a 4.5" grinder and a drill. I only paid a pro to do the welding and the tube bending. Maybe in the future I'll get a nice welder. I'm just sayin', don't let the lack of welder keep you from the fun of Jeep building. Start small, build up your confidence and tool collection, and you'll be well on your way to tackling the tough stuff. :clapping:
  2. Now there is a good idea. Maybe if they all don't snap off on my next big project truck I can do something similar.
  3. It's a lot of work for an 86. Everything needs to be swapped, including all the wire harness and the front radiator supports (to fit the 4.0 radiator, the hood needs to be swapped for the later models with the corner latches, which means everything surrounding the new latches will need to be changed). A complete donor vehicle is highly recommended. An easier swap would be to change your auto to an AX-5 manual.
  4. All it does it change the shift points for the transmission. The power setting is superior in every way for a 2.5L (otherwise the trans shifts before the engine gets to its sweet spot). 4.0s can get away with the comfort setting.
  5. Yup. :( It's one of the few things I would gladly leave in the hands of the pros.
  6. I'm going to need pictures of this supposedly too-tall MJ.
  7. Looks like a used Fabtech tire mount. Should work fine for ya.
  8. Things such as old axles are rarely equal. :D What condition are they in? How much "freshing up" does each need? Mileage? Prices? Gear ratios? Does the 8.8 have disks?
  9. Have you thought about just fixing what's there? A multimeter and a shop manual (whether in book form or online) can get your truck running reliably. Don't fear the fuel injection. It's a far superior delivery system and the Jeep Renix versions are pretty straightforward once you get to know them.
  10. For the back, I generally recommend welding some steel to the axle rather than removing the bumpstop and trying to put a curved plate under it. I broke 3 of the 4 rear bumpstop bolts and I used tons of PB Blaster and time. :fs1:
  11. bumpstops are what keep the axle from going up too far. Depending on the setup, going up too far can cause tire-to-fender contact, or the shocks can bottom out, etc. The hockey pucks were acting like a bumpstop extension. Likely he had really big tires on his rig and that was his sure for keeping them out of the fenders.
  12. Was gonna. I was curious if there's enough truck left for someone to build up.
  13. Ahhhh. That would be a good reason. I highly recommend an additional crossmember and support to hold up that heavy case. I doubt the AX-5's case can take the stress for very long.
  14. Keep me posted. I was looking at it too.
  15. Sop you're the one that bought that. How's the rust on it?
  16. A lift won't necessitate longer bumpstops. Bigger tires necessitate longer bumpstops. YJ brake lines can be used up front, 95 Dakota in the rear.
  17. My mom's old Yamaha. Cleaned it up and sold it a couple years back.

    Divorced MJ

Used to be. I cleaned it up and got it back on topic (and in accordance to our new rules, the posts were moved, not deleted). Well, it was on topic for a minute at least. Now we're talking about the talking. :D
  19. A 21 spline 242 is somewhat rare-ish. Should be able to sell it to a Renix owner or 2.5L owner.
  20. Got an email from Rick (been hearing everything 2nd or 3rd hand so far). Turns out it wasn't a car accident, but a really bad fall (when I heard "accident", I assumed the vehicular kind). Cindy is more responsive today, and is able to wiggle her toes and write messages with her hand. :D
  21. Driveshaft should be fine. What are you doing about the t-case?
  22. 1: no 2: no (use the pilot bushing from an 84 CJ with the 304 engine. costs like $2) 3 use the bellhousing and internals from the AX-15. Try to get them all from the new trans, including the slave cylinder and most of it's line. You won't need anything from the Peugeot except the master cylinder and part of the hose 4 that trans is the best era of AX-15.
  23. An insanely heavy t-case with a poor low range. I gotta ask why you would want to try and adapt it into your Jeep. :???:
  24. Crawl underneath and look? :dunno: I don't have any 2wds at the house so I can't help much.
