He's still kicking it, just busy with work. I went down to his place last weekend and raided his parts pile.....came back with a whole bed full of stuff :chillin: He's DD-ing a cherry black 88 (I think) 2.5 MJ now too..... Welcome back, DC  Jeff

I reused the stock plates flipped on top, and bought a set of short shocks. They work fine, but I do have a set of RE weld-on perches to put on the tubes, sometime this year... Jeff Image Not Found

pressure carburetor????
mjeff87 replied to Beachbum1236's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Throttle body injection (TBI) Sounds like a semantic difference to me.... Jeff -
87-89 XJ/MJ's with an auto and 2.5L engine only. And if the rig is 4WD, you get the bonus of a 4.56 geared D30 front, too. Jeff

sittin' here doing my best tonight....this is the first year in I can't remember that I'm not back home in PA doing the shamrock shuffle. I'm about 2 beers away from not making it to the bedroom ;) Martin clan, County Galway. Wife and I are going back to the Emerald Isle next year for our (belated) 15th anniversary. Jeff

If it was a 5 speed, yes. '87-90 XJ/MJ's that came with a 2.5 and an AW4 got 4.56's. Jeff
-
If it's factory, the rear axle will have 4.56's in it..... That bellhousing is a pretty rare bird, too. Also, the torque converter is unique...the front part of it that fits into the crank end is different than a 4.0 version. Jeff

Yeah, but I bet he's a Browns fan...... Just kidding :D welcome aboard.... Jeff

FWIW, I'm using 5.5 TJ coils on mine in the front with a 3/4" spacer. It's got about a 3/4-1" rake. The coils are softer than XJ/MJ ones, and I just put new front shocks on yesterday along with a set of BPE's. Almost rides like stock again :D Jeff -
4.0 fuel line disconnect from injector rail
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
huh....I'll be damned. Thanks guys! Jeff -
OK, calling all you 4.0 wizards..... How do you get the rear fuel line disconnected off the rail? I've got the special tool, which works great for the supply line to the regulator, but there's not enough room to slip the tool over the metal line and get it inside the fitting to pop it. Is there a special-special tool? Jeff

anyone here have an '89 MJ with 2.5L?
mjeff87 replied to mjeff87's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
RedBull....I'll PM ya. Genovast, I see that you have two same year MJ's.....I'm'a PM you as well. Thnx! Jeff -
If you do, please PM me.....I need to ask you a small favor. Thanks, Jeff

I don't want to put out bad information, and I don't want to come across in the wrong way JeepcoMJ, but have you actually done this swap? Reason I ask is that I've been doing serious amounts of research on it in prep for mine, and it doesn't appear you need the interior harness to make it work. I've talked with three different people who have done this swap successfully, one used the interior harness but the other two simply plugged the engine harness into the bulkhead of the 2.5 harness and everything worked. One even used an XJ harness, and both of the two used different model year engine harnesses than what their vehicle was. I've also researched thru FSM's and dealership parts catalogs, and the same interior harness p/n was used for each model year from 87-89, regardless of drivetrain (engine or transmisson, 2 or 4WD). The only difference in interior harnesses is diesel versus gas engine. On the gas models, seperate engine harnesses are listed, but each plug into the same bulkhead connector, which is hard-wired to the same fuseblock, and associated interior harness that has the same part number. Leaving the 2.8 and diesel out of the discussion, the only differences in the engine harness between a 2.5 and a 4.0 Renix are the injector circuits, cam sensor, knock sensor, and location of the EGR solenoid from what I've compared....and none of those feed thru the bulkhead connector. They only go to the ECU (which is different, of course). Jeff

you're gonna need the 4.0 engine bay harness, including the ECU. Looks like this ;) Image Not Found

on the TC shift rod, put the case in 2HI and loosen the trunion nut that holds the rod in position. Then, put the shift handle in the 2WD position and tighten the trunion nut back down. Also, there's three different sized linkage rods (the rod that actually attaches to the TC) depending on what tranny the TC was behind. The AX5 is the shortest, then the AX15, and the longest is the AW4. Make sure you have the correct rod for your tranny or it won't shift into all positions. Jeff -

Making XJ buckets work in a MJ
mjeff87 replied to mfpdm's topic in MJ Tech: DIY Projects and Write-Ups
yes, there's a tiny tack weld on each as well, behind the rivets. Look for a tiny little dimple behind where you drilled and you'll see it. Take a thin chisel or a screwdriver that you're not too fond of and pound inbetween to pop each one. Jeff -

how so Pat? I've got the harness from the ECU (and the ECU) the whole way to the fuseblock. Everything looks the same, outside of the injector harness and a couple other doodads, as the 2.5 harness. Jerry and I stripped, and I mean stripped, the interior of the donor MJ today, and the interior harness has the same wiring as well...even the fuseblock is the same. The only difference in the engine harnesses is that the donor MJ was an auto...I'll need to figure out how to jump the non-existant NSS, like we did with our buddies YJ when we went from auto to manual. Or am I  JEff -

I’m right around 6” with 33’s (5.5" TJ coils and small spacer in the front and SOA in rear). The only thing you might want to think about cutting is the rear fender flares in the front. I moved my axle forward 1.25” to center it, but the 33’s won’t stuff fully because they hit (bad) in the rear. I haven’t gotten the sawzall out yet, but it’s on the to-do list (I’ve already chopped the front). Image Not Found And for the 4.0 swap, you’ll need the entire underhood harness. This one took me about 2 hours to pull yesterday, after I figured out how to get it separated and pulled thru the front clip (you have to pull the clip and fish it backwards thru the hole in the driverside header panel: Image Not Found -
Thanks guys.....top ones are verified as IAC and TPS (I only need the one becuase of a manual trans). Bottom one still in question is either MAT or coolant temp (thinking it's the MAT, but then I don't know where the coolant temp is now...gonna have to run back down and look at donor vehicle again in the morning to verify) I do see an FSM in my future, very soon! "Dis is gonna be fun" :D Jeff

Pulled a wiring harness off an 88 4.0/AW4 MJ in the ‘yard today, and have a couple of connectors I need to identify. The MJ had been picked over a bit before I got there and some stuff was missing….I’ve got everything figured out except three connectors to the manifold/TB area, and two connectors under the manifold, in the same loom as the knock sensor. First, the three on top of the manifold. One is a 4-wire connector: Blue/yellow tracer Green/black tracer Purple/black tracer Red/yellow tracer One is a 3-wire flat connector: Yellow/green tracer Brown/white tracer Red/yellow tracer And one is a 3-wire square connector: Light gray/black tracer Red/no tracer Tan/pink tracer Image Not Found The others are below the manifold, in the same loom as the knock sensor: 2-wire connector: Tan Brown/white tracer 3-wire connector (is this the O2 sensor connector?): Orange Gray Black Image Not Found BTW....here's the whole mess. Took me about 2 hours to pull it all (once I figured out how to get it seperated and pulled thru the front clip :D Got the whole harness, radiator support, fan shroud, ECU, throttle cable and linkage for $50...... not wanting to discourage you, but 34's + 2.5 (TBI) + 3.55's are gonna bring the suck......at least swap the 207 for a 231 with the deeper low. I'm at 4.56 on 33 AT's now, and am planning a 4.0L swap   Jeff
