I've got the Serpentine belt blues
PIKE replied to Comanche County's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Yes, in this case. They make one for a V-belt and one for a V-ribbed belt. I think its pretty handy. Think of it like a tire pressure gauge, you could guess at that too. -

I should also add that the FS manual for 1989 specs are, New belt 180-200 lbs-f Used belt 140-160 lbs-f -

I think your belt is too loose. Try one of these. http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Detail ... 0006447252 Takes out all the guess work. -
Another overheating thread...

I had the same thing happen with my truck. I thought the hose was leaking coolant at the bottom of the tank. The tank had a hair line crack at the half way point from top to bottom, at the same level as where the collant is supposed to be. I would add coolant and think it was leaking from that fitting but it was leaking from the crack on to that fitting. Since the crack was at the level the coolant was supposed to be at, I never gave it a thought. I replaced just about every part of my cooling system until I finally figured out that it was the tank and cap. I got a new tank and cap from the dealer and that took care of the problem for a while. Unfortunately the cap would not hold pressure and I had the same problem again. I now have a Mac's tank and no more problems. Hope this helps. -
You can get them here. Scroll about 3/4 way down the page. http://www.teamcherokee.com/Cooling/index.html Picture. http://www.teamgrandwagoneer.com/parts/ ... /1763.html

Glad I could help. I have had a lot of problems with the plastic tanks. Not only do they crack but the caps don't seal very well either. I had a hose clamp around the cap for a while. Got tired of the whole set up. With the metal tank you can fix it right and move on. Also when you purge the system removing the temp. sender at the back of the head is a great way to do it. Don't forget to do that. Here is a picture of the 2.5L expansion bottle. You can get cheaper universal ones at any auto parts store, but I really like the way this factory one worked out. It bolts right up to holes that are already in the inner fender. You also have to order the cap separatly. I don't have the part # any more but some one on this site gave them to me. This set up also allows you to keep your electric fan sensor or add one if you don't have already have it. Good Luck.

The Macs tank uses a standard radiator cap. There is a hose fitting in the filler neck for the cap. If you run a hose from that fitting to an expansion tank (not an overflow tank) you will have an open system. Its that easy. An expansion tank from an early MJ with a 2.5L works perfect for this mod.

The expansion bottle from a 1989 2.5 works good with the Macs tank to make an open system. I have a cone filter intake setup on my truck, don't know if it will fit with the stock air box.

Should my overflow tank be "boiling"
PIKE replied to SuperWade2's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
My original plastic expansion bottle had a crack at the same height as the fill level post. My cap fit tight and the fluid was always at the proper level. It took me a long time to figure out what was wrong. I got a new bottle and cap at the dealer but the cap would not hold pressure. To fix it I put a hose clamp on the cap so I could tighten it more. Maybe the after market bottles are better than the ones that the dealers are selling. Good luck -

Valve Cover Bolts/Seal/OIL CAP??

X2 The FELPRO gasket is a thing of beauty. If you ever tried to seal the valve cover with a cork gasket and rtv you know what I mean. :wrench: I used some black wrinkle paint on my cover turned out pretty nice. -

Well said Eagle, I think you and I are on the same page. I checked my cap this morning and it is a Stant 16lb vented My thermostat is a Stant 195* I think every one out here will agree its hard to fill and get the air out of these systems. -

Chico, You have it hooked up correctly. Since you have the tube go into the plastic bottle at the bottom and the MACs tank full to the top the plastic bottle is functioning as an expansion tank, not an overflow tank. I think you still have air in your system. MACs did not send me a cap with my tank, so I bought one for a 91 and up Cherokee 4.0 since they have the open system. The cap is designed to let fliud back into the system. If you were to fill the MACs tank up only 1/2 way run a short hose from the small fitting to the ground and use a cap with the same pressure rating as the plastic OEM tank than you would have a closed system. I think thats why the MACs rep said to do it that way. I try to park my truck down hill as much as I can and remove the temp. sender with the engine not running. Then fill the MACs tank until fluid starts to come out where the sender was, replace the sender and fill as much as it will hold. I run it until it warms up and shut it off. I always get one good burp. Some times I have to do it several times, and I always fill into the plastic expansion tank. Also I would not recomend more than a 50/50 antifreeze mix. Make sure you have your heater turned on when you do all this too. Hope this helps. -

Make sure you have plenty of coolant in your plastic bottle after you shut off the enjine. You will be suprised at how much gets sucked back in the system. -
Sounds like you still have air in the system. Did you fill up your plastic overflow about half way? When my jeep is cold the bottle is about 1/4 full, when hot about 1/2 full. It took a while to get all the air out of the system. I had to add some coolant after every heat and cool off cycle for a few times until it stablized.
