They're no good if you're expecting a quiet, quality ride on the street. However, they are apparently great for flex off road.

Heat will remove the decals (even with paint over them, provided the PO didn't use rhinoliner). Then there's the 30 year old adhesive. I'm no chemical engineer, but I can tell you the adhesive definitely changes the paint under it. When I had my truck repainted the guy stripped the decals and prepped those areas before shooting the primer. '88 Pioneer decals removed, you can see that where they were, required special prep as well as more sanding.

I would address the surface rust forthwith! You can never do that too soon. As to the clear, there's nothing you can do about it. If the paint is checked/cracked your prep for paint will cost you as much as the paint itself.

Technology is not (always) your friend. I choose to drive older vehicles. Traction control can get you killed and proximity sensors are equally dangerous.

I have no doubt the cap is OEM, but that hole is sketchy. More to your question … I've never seen an opening in that position in any XJ console. Never saw window controls in the console except in later model Jeeps, like the Liberty.

That thing can't move in anything other than a straight line (if at all) when slammed. Air or hydraulics will lift to clear turning the wheels. I bet it drives (like crap), but I wouldn't take it far from the garage.

It looks like this guy used pre-97 XJ rear bumper ends on his 98 XJ. Perhaps you could make the same "work" with some finagling? You have to eliminate the 97+ bumper ends when you put after market flares on. I think it cleaned up the rear end nicely.
