I need help!! (with axles and gears)
mvusse replied to The BOMB's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I run 35" tires and an Aussie locker in the stock D30 with the larger u joints. I have had the front axle hopping and bouncing without a problem. All the breakage I have had was initially caused by a seizing Timken unit bearing on the freeway. Have not had a problem with the diff or shafts. A friend of mine runs 35" tires on a ZJ with an open D30 and he has blown two sets of spider gears so far. I have no spider gears, so.... -
1987 Jeep Comanche Pioneer 4.0/AW4/231 D30 front, originally D35 rear, now 29 spline 8.25" with ZJ discs. 120" wheel base (lwb) Build date of 11/86. Currently located in Strasburg, OH and on the road. Completely original black interior with vinyl buckets and full gauge cluster minus tach (changed out for one with tach a while go). Original paint job was dark grey, possibly two tone. Also originally with chrome front end including bumper, but black step bumper on the rear. Oops

Where did you find a breather elbow? JY?? CW Advance Auto Parts. Dorman/Help! part number 47034, markes as "PCV system elbow, GM" has the correct 1" push in end to go into the valve cover. The other end is 5/8" instead of 1/2", but a small hose clamp fixes that just fine. Cost $4.59. This will work for the Renix (87-90) valve covers. The HO valve cover is different.

I'm sorry for your loss, may your memories comfort you.

Almost want to buy this XJ just because of the ad...

When I traded my Suburban straight up for a Cherokee, the title office said we could put $0 for the purchase price since no money was involved. Then when I got my license plates they asked me why $0 and I explained. Fair enough, no problem. With all the flaws in Ohio government and regulations, compared to other states we seem to have it pretty good here. -
Just got off the phone with the park, to let them no I have 10 rigs definitely going with 10 more maybes. Camping both Friday and Saturday is no problem, and free of charge. I was told towing trailers (including pop up campers) into the camp ground is pretty much impossible, so they will have to stay in the parking lot. That means I will be hanging out with everybody at the camp ground, but will be sleeping in the parking lot. It is just much more convenient to pack the trailer and leave the bed available for my play tires and tools than to try to fit everything in the back. I imagine the Cherokee owners probably remove the rear seat and fold the back flat to make it all fit. As for people driving up Wranglers, hats off as I have no clue how you make it all fit. When we get closer to the date we will figure out where the NE Ohio people will meet up to convoy together, how many groups/convoys will work best, etc. etc. As for the people local to the park, I guess we will see you there.

It SHOULD be a 7mm Allen, but if someone tried to use a 6mm on it, they may have rounded it out. The newer ones (91+?) are a regular 10mm hex bolt, but they also used cast on caliper brackets and different brakes. Maybe get an E12 socket and take the entire bracket off the steering knuckle, with the caliper still attached? And watch out when buying a set of Allen wrenches, as most sets jump from 6mm to 8mm.

I thought this was about how to open a locked Comanche door. Guess what I got on the brain  Anyhow, it seems like you pretty much figured things out, so all that's left to say is "good luck, hope everything works out the way you planned."

Sorry, no clue on that one. just the 87 through 90 ones. Maybe at some point I will have to find something for either my 94 or 96 Cherokee, but they are both still fine so far.

Replaced breather elbow and upper radiator hose.

After looking around Autozone, NAPA and two Advance Auto Parts stores I came up with Dorman/Help! part number 47034, marked as a "PCV system elbow" for GM vehicles. The 1" end fits perfectly in the valve cover. The 5/8" end is a bit too large to fit well on the tube, but a hose clamp fixed that easily enough. $4.59 Problem solved.

Where can I get one, or something else that works?

Replaced the old leaky Siemens fuel injectors with a set of Bosch ones from http://www.precisionautoinjectors.com/. Have not driven it yet, as the breather elbow on the valve cover fell apart on me, but it starts much easier and idles much smoother now. Anybody know where to get an elbow that fits? All the junk yard ones are dry rotted.

Missed the part that it was Lake Township in Woods county. I thought it was further east. I was at Jeepskool, near Garrettsville. Far northern Portage county. There were tornado warnings just north of us. A tornado also damaged a school as well as Skyline Manufacturing (they make modular homes) in Sugarcreek, about 5 miles from Strasburg.

I was camping and wheeling not too terribly far away from the EF-4 in Lake Township, Ohio that killed 5 people. No damage where I was at, though.

anybody 4-linked their MJ???

Get some higher lift springs and get rid of the blocks on your axle. They are probably the main reason for your wheel hop. Gives the axle way too much leverage on the springs. -
Drivetrain noise after trying to pull tree stump

I agree. No gasket needed on a diff cover. -

How did you check the u joints? Could also be internal to the axle. -
One Guy's Opinion OME shocks
mvusse replied to glundblad's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
To continue the discussion on shocks, I would say the opposite for Skyjacker shocks. One of my Cherokees came with almost new Skyjacker shocks. They are WAY too stiff. Makes the Cherokee ride like a 3/4 ton truck. -

He's been trying to sell it for at least two years now. $8K is simply too much for a 22 year old truck, or even a 13 year old truck. -
Mine flexes a bit more than that 9although it doesn't look nearly as nice). Down travel is currently limited by the shocks.

Scored a set for $51 plus shipping this morning. Who was I bidding against? I've been "going to" get a set for about 2 years now...

BAH. I have a D30 front and run 35s on it locked. (With the larger joint shafts and 5-760x joints) and had it bouncing multiple times without breakage. The weak parts are the hubs. Had one fail on the freeway that eventually caused a front wheel to come off at 60mph, after evidently running on the shaft for 20 miles after the hub split. But they are still the same hubs on the TJ Rubicon 44s. Problem with the 35s is I can't feel the road underneath me, or tell how seriously something is wrong on the front end without getting out to look at it. Also, for 35" tires with 6.5" lift and heavy cutting you still need to bump stop quie seriously. 33s are a better choice.

I bought a new bottle off Ebay for about $25 I think, and it's been good for over a year now.
