Back in 1994 driving a GMC 3500HD dump truck with a Vortec 454 and 5 speed stick I blew away a Ford Escort with a body kit that was trying to show off. Imagine that, an ESCORT. With a BODY KIT! :rotf:

Never mind the fact that Ford weighs twice as much as your MJ.
-
Who makes 3" spacers? 1.75" spacers are everywhere, though.

Best mileage I have gotten out of my 87 MJ was 24mpg (60 mph). Best I have gotten out of either my 94 or 96 XJ was 21 or 22mpg (70mph). But even though the Renix equipped MJ is quick (or was, on stock tires), the XJs are rockets. If you can keep your speed down, the Renix will get better mileage, but if you're a lead foot, at 75mph the HO will do better (my Renix only got about 17mpg cruising at 75, while my 94 XJ still got 21).

Fuel Pump, the same in the XJ and the MJ?
mvusse replied to Jason H. Rea's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
87 through 90. Make sure it's the same engine, as the 2.5l 4 cylinder and 4.0l 6 cylinder use different pumps. -
Turns out of links I posted are for the ECM. Advance does carry one for the gauge, and it looks like the NAPA one, Autozone does not seem to. I think this should be it: Everco part number 36400 http://www.autozone.com/autozone/catalog/parts/partsShelf.jsp?categoryDisplayName=Climate+Control&fromType=parts&fromString=search&parentId=52-0¤tPage=1&filterByKeyWord=coolant+temperature&isSearchByPartNumber=false&navValue=15200113&categoryNValue=15299999&fromWhere=&itemId=113-0&displayName=Coolant+Temperature+Sensor&searchText=coolant+temperature Or from Advance BWD part number WT5011: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_Coolant-Temperature-Sensor-BWD_3461572-P_290_R|GRPSENSAMS_529634046___# Don't know if the links will work for you because there may be cookies involved

Fuel Pump, the same in the XJ and the MJ?

:agree: The pumps are the same, but the sender units are different. Make sure you get one for the correct engine, though. -
Last night (but it was today when I came home) I washed the inside of the windshield with water and a rag, then windexed inside and out and sprayed all the mud out of the bed. Then I went to the drive in to watch Ironman 2. Wasn't sure if we wanted to sit on the cab or the bed, but with the impending thunderstorms we chose for the cab.

Yes, a 6.5 degree caster angle will give you a 2.5 degree pinion angle. No a 7 to 8 degree caster angle will give you a 1 to 2 degree pinion angle. To get a 3 degree pinion angle you need a 6 degree caster angle.
-
Going from memory here, but pretty sure about this: Stock caster angle is 6.5 degrees, stock pinion angle is 2.5 degrees. When I lifted my truck 6.5" I attempted to find a happy median between pinion angle and caster (I have adjustable upper and lower arms also). I had the pinion angle at about 5 degrees, and caster was 4 degrees. No vibes, but she wanted to wander like crazy on the freeway. After a couple thousand miles like that and a 100 mile almost suicide trip without a sway bar I set forget it, set the pinion back at the stock 2.5 degrees which put caster back at 6.5 degrees. Rides nice and straight again, and disconnecting the sway bar doesn't cause any trouble either.

MJ shackle on an XJ will net ~ 3/4". IIRC, a XJ 2" lift shackle will lift an MJ about 1", and the comment I got on mine was "HOLY LONG SHACKLE, BATMAN!" Can't forget the fact that the MJ axle does not sit on the center of the spring. More of a 40/60 split.

My 2wd XJ (1996 4.0HO/AW4) just got 21-22mpg by itself, 18-19mpg towing a 1600 pound trailer on a 930 mile round trip. That's with the cruise set at 70 mph most of the way.
-
My 87 MJ, the way it sits now, but with 235/75R15 tires on it i can get 24mpg on the highway if i stick to 60mph. Don't know around town, but mixed driving town/highway was around 17. With the 33x12.50 ATs I could get ~20 highway, 16 mixed. But with the 35x12.50 MTs I barely get 12mpg for a trip (drive ~an hour and a half on the highway, wheel a day or two, drive home). Don't know what just the highway mileage is, but I'm guessing ~17. Rubber compound and tire tread can make a big difference. My 1994 4.0HO/stick gets ~21mpg highway, 17 city running 235/75R15 where stock is 215/75R15. My 1996 4.0HO/auto gets ~22mpg highway at a mixture of speeds varying from 60 to 90 mph running 225/75R15 (one size smaller, stock size is the same), don't know city yet as I have only had it for a few weeks, but I did just drive it ~400 miles a few days ago. and will again tomorrow. But tomorrow I will be towing a 1700 pound trailer that is quite a bit wider than the XJ, so mileage will be out the window. From my experience, the Renix engines can get better mileage if you keep the speed down. The HO engines get better mileage at higher speeds, but can't touch the best numbers. No matter what, the 4.0 is not a very efficient engine. My 1984 Olds 98 with a 307 fed through a Rochester Quadrajet got better mileage than my twelve year newer multiport fuel injected Cherokee that weighs a lot less, and has a smaller displacement engine.

The sucker weighs 1560 pounds dry, with a max loaded weight of 2000 pounds even. For a pop-up, it's ginormous. Technically, to tow it with the Cherokee, it needs brakes.
-
This one goes BEHIND the Jeep: Technically I've already had it for 20 years, but it's been stored at my uncle's dairy farm in Canada for 16 years (and borrowed a few times while there). He finally dug it out for me and I will be towing it home Sunday.

The federal government gave the option of 1) Renault couldn't buy AM General or 2) AM General will lose it's military contract. No foreign government is allowed to have control over US military contracts. Renault is partly owned by the french government. AMC/Kaiser was on the verge of bankruptcy. and NEEDED the deal with Renault to happen. The only way to make it happen was to split off AM General. And AM General did not make a deal with GM, GM BOUGHT AM General. Although AM General did use a GM engine and drive train in it's Humvees all along.

I currently run a sending unit out of a junk yard 89 2.5l on my 87 4.0. 4.0 pump swapped right over onto the 2.5 unit.
-
The sending unit is identical between the 2.5 and 4.0. The only difference is 86-90 and 91-92 (and 86 V6 is different also). Both size pumps fit on the same sending unit. Cherokee (XJ) sending units are not the same a the Comanche ones, unlike what stores will try to tell you. They will NOT interchange.
-
Installed radio antenna on Booger, junkyard unit bearing on Sparkles, and stored away a spare tail light and fuel sending unit I scored today. Sadly the other tail light had a hole in it and the dome lights had the clips broke off.

I have a 4.0/auto and 33s with stock ratio sucked. I now run 35s with the stock gears and overdrive is useless. Drove a friend's Cherokee on 33s with 4.10 gears (also 4.0/auto) and it's about the same as stock gears on stock tires. haven't had a chance or funds to go to 4.10 yet. When I do my current axles are going into Booger, which currently has the stock 3.07 ratio.
