  1. He's smoking pot if he thinks they're worth $175. Some people on here buy entire trucks for that, and I paid just over double that for mine, 4wd and all.
  2. 1.9 is ~4, isn't it? ;) I heard the trucks were 4" wider, I knew the axles were wider, so I assumed by 4" also.
  3. Mother@#$%@#$@#%$@#!@#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Man I'm pissed at this thing right now. Time for a beer and bust out the welder. If you don't mind ruining the gear set, you can grind off the part of the ring gear teeth that interfere with the cross shaft.
  4. He said it was a local ordinance.
  5. Be aware JK axles are ~4" or so wider than YJ/TJ/XJ/ZJ/WJ/WK and MJ axles.
  6. The D30 has a spring pin holding the cross shaft in. There's a little hole you can stick a thin rod in to knock it out. I know from experience that with 3.55 gears the cross shaft will not clear the ring gear meaning the carrier needs to be removed to remove the ring gear before the cross shaft can come out. Don;t know about other ratios. I had a 3.07 sitting around but gave it away before looking at it. Also have a 4.10 around somewhere, but can't remember offhand where it is at. (I have at least three, possibly as many as five front D30s, some complete, most partial, hiding in 4000 square feet of weeds called my back yard  )
  7. Wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be a Cheroker.
  8. I've seen a number of ZJs with u joint axles, sometimes on one side, sometimes both. Small u joints, large, ABS, non ABS. It seems to not be uncommon to swap a u joint shaft in when a CV shaft goes out.
  9. Sounds to me like a bad connection or corroded wire between the battery and starter or a bad starter. BTW, the solenoid is mounted on the starter and the two are usually replaced as a unit.
  10. No need to drop the transfer case, even with 7-8" of lift.
  11. Once single clunk, or multiple ones in a row when moving? If a single clunk I would suspect track bar or ball joints.
  12. Spending good money of Mobil 1, why would you waste it with a Fram piece of poo?
  13. With a 4wd truck, the speedo hooks up to the rear output of the transfer case instead of the transmission. Since that is further back you may need a longer cable.
  14. 16 around town is probably right. I'm getting 17. But 14 highway is way off. Should be getting close to double that.
  15. The only MJ/XJ I have seen that cleared 37" tires pretty well with <7" lift ran full width axles. But since you run them also, I think you might be okay. You'll still have to trim the fenders and/or bump stop, though.
  16. I don't see any way a complete kit for 6.5" lift done correctly will fit in your $700 budget, or even under $1000. Control arm drop brackets are not a bad idea if your truck does not go off road, or only sees mud and sand off road. They work great as anchors in the rocks with more damage done by the rocks to the brackets than by the brackets to the rocks.
  17. $1200 is way to much for the parts.
  18. You say, aside from the air cleaner that there are no differences between the 86 and 87 4 cylinders. I thought the 86 was carbureted?
  19. And with the XJ being a 98, it would have the 29 spline 8.25 as opposed to the 27 variant for early 96 and older. Axle shafts almost as strong as a D44. The C in Dana 35C just stands for custom. That just means the axles were shipped from Dana to the car manufacturer (in this case, AMC or Chrysler, depending on year) in unfinished condition. But early Dana 35s did not use C clips, using a retainer behind the brakes to keep the axle in place, whereas newer ones use C slips inside the carrier to do it.
  20. And lift/larger tires is useful in more than just mud. It allows me to go over larger downed trees, up or down taller ledges and crawl over larger boulders. Assuming it would have been possible to cut enough to fit 35" tires with a stock suspension and still be able to steer (not really possibly because the front wheel well and suspension components get in the way) I still would not have nearly the suspension travel needed to tackle any of the above.
  21. Some 3/4 ton and 1 ton pickup trucks were exempt through at least 78.
  22. Oh yeah. While taking a forced 4 month break from college in 92 I got a job rust proofing cars and doing miscelaneous mechanical work for the owner, including work on the owner's Monza. Worst POS Chevy I've ever seen.
  23. It's caused by blow-by. It is not actually "normal", but something the Jeep 4.0 has a reputation for and most of us just learn to live with it. Whenever I'm at the junkyard I check for good condition air filters as they are less than $1 and for that price I can't justify not changing them. A number of people I know with Cherokees as well as some people on here have constructed some sort of oil catch device to keep it out of the air filter and in a container instead.
