AX15 - Gear Oil vs. Motor Oil (again)
A-man930 replied to youngfred's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I've had Royal Purple 5w30 in mine for over 7 years now. Local Jeep shop did an overhaul on it back in the day and that's what they recommended. Only changed it once and that's because the truck went for a swim -
Dang dude that looks great

Jeez dude you'll have me considering doing my own body repairs before this thread is done. Good work!

Ring and pinion break in question
A-man930 replied to Jacob Ochs's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
The front gearset doesn't usually get the same attention that the rear does because we don't normally drive in conditions that would cause it to make noise. Change the oil at the same time you do for the rear and call it good. -

Troubleshooting A/C - Noise from compressor?
A-man930 replied to Zambeezy's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Either steer clear entirely of that stuff or make 100% certain that you tell any future service shop that you've put propane in it. I say just shoot some 134a in it and be done -
I spy CV shafts... what's the front axle from?

Love the attention to detail!

86 Diesel MJ to VW TDI conversion
A-man930 replied to johnj92131's topic in MJ Hardcore Tech: Epic Journeys to Greatness
Would you happen to know from what engine code that 1.6 exhaust manifold is from? I'm not coming up with much solid info on domestic late '80s / early '90s VW diesels; the wiki page is pseudo helpful because it doesn't break down where in the world each engine was available... is it an SB perhaps (~1990 Golf/Jetta)?? Reason I ask is I'm liking the high-mount arrangement more and more despite not having an easy plug-n-play EGR cooler/valve any more. And lastly, did you say somewhere that the ports don't match up to the head or am I just making that up? lol Dig the pan baffle and modded pickup btw. -

Are we to assume there will be no EGR? -

Seems like I've seen the VW P/S pump be utilized in other (XJ) conversions... just going by memory. -

bitchin! Is the compressor housing able to be clocked? (are any of them able to be??) -
It still works great after a year and a half with regular usage. If the teeth on the pawl are shot and/or the pedal is loose on its pivot then this is really your only choice. The spring replacement/upgrade is obviously easier if yours isn't too far gone yet.

Same question here. Although I want to say it's a common aftermarket "high torque" starter for sbc or something. Stumbled upon this today. Hmmm... -
10 Hole Rim "Jeep" Center Cap Replacement Decals
A-man930 replied to Lucas7667's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
I'm planning to use them on my ProComp center caps  If the demand exceeds the supply I'll step aside for those who have the OEM 10-holers. I'll then promptly steal the idea and have my buddy make vinyl versions! lol -

I say go for the KO2s. I had the old KOs in 32x11.50 R15 and I loved them so much that I got some KO2s when I stepped up to 33x10.50s. I guess I really don't have any comparisons but I find kinda raise an eyebrow when people complain about the BFG A/Ts for snow... what do y'all expect? Its not a studded snow tire folks.

Sector shaft support style braces?
A-man930 replied to A-man930's topic in MJ Tech: Modification and Repairs
Ok so the Boostwerks "Ultimate XJ Steering Brace" does look like the original based on the time frame I see forum activity. Keeping in mind I don't have either one of these in my hands, I'll go on record saying I think the Boostwerks piece looks to be a bit overbuilt. Let me explain: I've come to believe that I am indeed less of an engineer than the folks at AMC who designed the truck in the first place; if we're honest this probably applies to the majority of us... Are there poorly executed or "weak" areas in the XJ/MJ literally and figuratively?? indeed there are, that's why we're having this discussion. But adding what's essentially a super beefy, boxed Xmember across the front of the "frame" seems like a recipe for some other area of the unibody to suffer. By comparison, despite being .250 thick, the Ironman4x4 "flat plate with a lip formed into it" design probably accommodates more of the natural "twisting" movements of the chassis while still helping to hold the box in place; perhaps this is an overall better scenario for a truck that doesn't have any aftermarket frame plating, braces, roll cage, etc and probably never will. Perhaps I'm wrong on this though, and I've been known to overthink things. :hmm: Big picture: What I'm pondering here is if the approach of suring up and/or repairing the driver's side with a steel spacer between the box and the chassis, some sleeves in the rail for the 3 mounting bolts, and perhaps a bit of plating on the outboard (C-ROK??) in addition to a sector shaft brace is a more complete approach to this chronic XJ/MJ problem than some of the others out there.- 5 replies
