If you remove the entire shifter assembly (using the 4 bolts, not just removing the rod), you can see inside and see where the shift arm's at. If it's in the 3-4 slider, you can remove the retainer springs on each side, the retaining bolt in the shaft, and the big female allen plug on the back(on a 4wd unit, with the T-case removed). You can then pull the shift arm out, put it back in in the 5-R slider, and put the shifter back on. Should be able to pop it out then.
