  1. You really can't. Just a couple screws hold the front cluster plate on, then a few more hold the speedo in.
  2. The 2wd shaft is larger in diameter, yes, but they use the same U-joints. If you can change a U-joint, you can change the yoke. Is he going from 2wd to 4wd or just needing a replacement? If he's going to 4wd, he'll need to have his driveshaft shortened anyway, and chances are whoever does it will put in new joints to ensure a proper balance. Just give them the 4wd yoke to put on. When I converted mine, I didn't do that, and had to change it out myself. My truck is a 91, Ax-5 and NP207 are from an 86 cherokee, and the 4wd yoke I put on is from a 91 Ax-15/NP231 cherokee.
  3. No. 2wd ones are 21 spline, 4wd ones are 27. Found that out after I had my D.S. shortened for the swap, so I had to change yokes anyway.
  4. Sounds like the slave died. Being an 86, it should be external. Try bleeding it. You have to remove the slave, then completely compress it in order to bleed it properly. Try not to grind it up too much.
  5. I did it in my 88 XJ when the fan stopped working after the motor went back in. Ran a wire from the acc spot on the fuse box, to a toggle, to the fan, ground to the chassis. Just left if on all the time, never had a problem.
  6. except the gc has OTK steering...which is better for drive angles with lift. Whats WJ's not ZJ's.. They had the same LO-Pinion D30 as the TJ. So the knuckles would be a direct fit as long as you watch the rotor dates as Eagle pointed out. CW Considering ZJs weren't made until 93 I don't think it'll be a problem. It would be a big problem if you tried to use ZJ hubs and/or rotors on an 84-90 XJ or MJ. Well if you used the ZJ brake calipers would it be fine? Or is there axle shaft problems too?

  8. My Dad's 91 XJ has the Chrystler key(two sided), and both of my 91 MJs do. 91 was the year it switched. (I've seen 91 XJs with the GM style)
  9. I've seen just D44s go for more than that. If the body is somewhat decent and it runs fine, I'd say get it. 3.73 is a possibility too, I believe.
  10. How I removed the BA 10/5 transmission from my 88XJ when it got scrapped: 1. Jack up truck. 2. Remove head, Oil Pan, Front axle. 3. Remove balancer, Timing cover, and Timing gears. 4. Unbolt transmission crossmember and Tranny to Engine bolts. 5. Remove Main Bearing knuckles. 6. Pull back about an inch to clear the Bell guid pins, and it drops right down :D
  11. Carquest is kinda screwy. I ordered a clutch for my 2.5L AX-4 and it was completely wrong. I had to get the part that had the number corresponding with the AX-5. Smaller diameter pressure plate and it was another $40. Fits though. That is screwy. The AX-4 and AX-5 are virtually identical. AX-4 is just missing parts for 5th. They use the same input shaft, case, bellhousing.. They probably have on their books that the Ax-4 was with the 2.5 and the Ax-5 was with the 2.8 or something stupid like that. It's a good thing I had an old throwout bearing to compare it with or I may have never gotten the right kit.
  12. I'll be doing the same in my blue one..eventually.
  13. Pete!!!! I need some more CC stickers :D Puttin ALL of my new ones on in the morning!
  14. You DO NOT have an Ax-5. If you're talking about the truck in your sig, then you have a 4.0. The Ax-5 was never used behind the 4.0. Since you have a 90, you'd have an AX-15. The truck does NOT have the same tranny that was original equipment if it is an ax-5. I would have thought that i had the AX-15 too. however, for some reason an ax5 clutch kit worked in it. :D Either it is an AX-5 or the same clutch works in both ax-5 and ax-15 I'm open to ideas on why or if that clutch kit would work in both trannys. it could be that i have an ax-15. I have experience with Carquest not knowing their clutch kits. I ordered a clutch kit for an 86 cherokee with the 2.5, since that's where the AX-5 in my red truck came from, and they gave me a completely different kit... the throwout bearing was the completely wrong style. I ordered the kit for the 2.8, and that worked.
  15. Not trying to be an @$$, but if you have a 4.0 you do not have an Ax-5. There is no bellhousing for it to bolt to the 4.0. It's either an AX-15 (which looks very similar to the AX-5) or the peugot. The 4.0 would demolish an AX-5 very quickly. As for the clutch kit working, you've got me.
  16. LOL no. Funny story with that though. When we drove out to Jeepcos to pick up Ally's truck, all the screws in that mudflap decided to be rusted out at that point, so Pat looked right at me, and said "Just take that off, you won't need it." Ironic?
  17. lol, you're good. I was talkin to james750. Cory, you have an Ax-5. There's about a 0.1% chance its a T-5.

  19. Finally got over to my Dad's and it came!
  20. The Pukey and AW-4 both have 21 spline outputs on the T-case. The AX-15 manual is different, with 23.
  21. One little problem with that. My truck is a 91, so the original 2wd AX-4 has the new style(bigger) speedo gear setup, with the electric sender. The transmission I put in is from an 86 XJ, so it's got the little one, and it had a cable. I've only got the one electric sender, and at this point it could be the only culprit....anyone got an extra laying around? :brows: edit: I do have another electric sender. It's attached to the blue truck.
  22. And I'm convinced today was the first time it saw mud. And it did that twice. First was when after we got everything set to take my friend Ally's MJ home from Jeepco's, we went up this fairly steep dirt hill right by his driveway, and it was the most offroading I've ever done. It was freakin awesome, especially with Ally and my brother in the truck. The second time...after we got back home, Me, Ally, and a friend went into Madison for the hell of it. On the way we went through a dirt road/trail thing and got covered in mud. Started hearing a loud clanking noise, paused quick, determined I hadn't broke anything important(just the exhaust) and kept going. I stopped a little later when it made noise again, looked under the truck and laughed. The front of my tailpipe,(which hasn't been in the muffler for a long time now) Had gotten caught on something and ripped, bent, and mangled backwards, which basically wrapped my tailpipe around my axle. I'll post up pics in the morning when it gets light out.
  23. Hey I was there!
