OzarkGuy Posted Sunday at 03:08 AM Posted Sunday at 03:08 AM Did the comanches come with insulation under the hood? Found this listing on eBay but it only shows the Cherokee. It would cover my rather ugly underside...
pizzaman09 Posted Sunday at 12:09 PM Posted Sunday at 12:09 PM I've never seen one with under hood insulation but it can't hurt to try that product. My understanding is the Comanche and Cherokee hoods are identical other than early ones had a single latch instead of the double on the later ones.
AnotherOldJeepGuy Posted Sunday at 12:17 PM Posted Sunday at 12:17 PM If you give it a try post pictures of the install please!
Eagle_SX4 Posted Sunday at 01:04 PM Posted Sunday at 01:04 PM My truck has the factory hood insulation on it I will get a pic later today.
Eagle_SX4 Posted Sunday at 04:23 PM Posted Sunday at 04:23 PM Here is what mine looks like. It does appear to be cut the same as the pic in the first post.

Can't tell if the new one is molded or flat from the pic for sure, but it looks flat. Also curious of how it is attached. I don't see any plastic bolts holding yours in place so the guess is it is stuck there with adhesive instead. Which also suggests you have to drill holes to install the new one with the fasteners provided.

If you look closely at the right side of the pic I took you can see three of the clips.
Eagle_SX4 Posted Sunday at 05:10 PM Posted Sunday at 05:10 PM After looking at my truck again there are clips at all the places the holes are at in the pic from eBay.
fiatslug87 Posted Sunday at 07:05 PM Posted Sunday at 07:05 PM I added it to all three of mine. This one is molded. https://ebay.io/m/PXbtQZ
eaglescout526 Posted Sunday at 08:09 PM Posted Sunday at 08:09 PM On the topic, anyone ever seen an 84-86 with such?
pizzaman09 Posted Monday at 10:35 AM Posted Monday at 10:35 AM I'll be curious if this actually reduces noise for you.
75sv1 Posted Monday at 11:18 AM Posted Monday at 11:18 AM I put some of the peel and stick sound deadening on the hood of my Avalanche. Then put on the factory hood insulation. I think it helped a bit.
Sarah Walker Posted Monday at 04:48 PM Posted Monday at 04:48 PM The combined approach makes sense — adding a sound-deadening layer under the factory insulation seems like it would address both vibration and airborne noise. I'm curious whether the peel-and-stick material alone made a noticeable difference before you added the factory piece back, or if the improvement only showed up with both layers in place. On the 84-86 question, I haven't seen one with it personally, so I can't say how common it was. Worth checking whether the hood bracing on those years has the mounting points for the insulation clips.
OzarkGuy Posted Monday at 10:01 PM Author Posted Monday at 10:01 PM My goals are to make the engine bay look a little nicer and help protect the hood from heat. Just had this thing painted.

MagicJames Posted Tuesday at 03:17 PM Posted Tuesday at 03:17 PM I bought that one in the original post for my 90 cherokee. It doesn't fit 100%, you gotta cut it a tiny bit and make new holes. If i could go back and choose a different one I feel like the one @fiatslug87 posted would be the better looking and more correct option.

Just had this thing painted. I took a different approach. I purchase self adhesive foil that is bonded to a think layer of closed cell foam. The foam provides SOME thermal insulation, but the foil is what really reflects the heat away from the hood. is it better than the factory fiberglass insulation? I don’t know, since I have never had another MJ or XJ with that insulation with which to make a comparison. The front edge of the hood still gets shockingly hot, to the point that I have to race from the secondary hood latch to the side by the prop rod to avoid the area where the radiator bakes the front edge of the hood. such is life in AZ in the summer
