When do you want to go?

  1. 1. What time of year and year would you like to go?

  2. 2. What kind of wheeling do you want to do?

    • Mild, no damage please
    • Wild, I'm not afraid of body damage

    • Somewhere in the middle. I don't want to tear stuff up, but I'm not afraid to bump my rock sliders here and there, but I don't want body damage.

This topic got started in this thread here:

Let's start thinking about ComancheClub going to Moab. Mainly, time of year and what kind of wheeling we want to do. I'm not sure if I can do Spring 2027 for sure, but any of the other times work for me. I'd prefer mild stuff, but I should have a set of rock sliders by then and I won't be afraid to use them.

Anyways, fill out the poll if you're interested so we can come up with a rough number of CC folks.

List of trails we have expressed interest in (likely to become some sort of itinerary as we get closer):

Rimrocker Trail (Montrose, CO to Moab, UT). We would have to hit this either before or after Moab. https://rimrockertrail.org/

Fins N Things

This is a good trail for people new to Moab.  Lots of slickrock and some fun hills.  Not too difficult for a vehicle close to stock.

There is a day use/week use fee of like $10 to access this trail.

Hell's Revenge

A favorite trail for many.  It has some optional obstacles to challenge more built rigs.  Lots of optional lines lets you do the easy route while being challenging for more built rigs.  An XJ on 32s and 3-4" lift has zero trouble making it on some of the harder lines.  Hell's gate is intimidating but not technically challenging.

Same day/week use fee as Fins.

Poison Spider

A difficult trail for more built rigs.  But you get to a scenic overlook at the top of the bluffs west of town that is pretty cool.

Top Of The World

A rough trail and you need to be built a little.  But the overlook is pretty stunning.  Google top of the world and you can see the pictures people take.

It's a bit of a drive to get there but worth it.

Chicken corners

Easy trail with scenic views.  There's a cool overlook that is good for a photo shoot.

Onion Creek

This one winds through a valley with high walls.  Many water crossings.  It's a fun trail.

Gemini Bridges

An easier trail that has scenic stops at natural rock bridges.

Id love to run trails like “Fins and Things” or similar. Mild trails where it’s really just about picking lines. Fall is probably a bit more reliable for precipitation. But May would be great but maybe not Labor Day weekend.

I've been a trail leader for EJS and I've done a bunch of trails from easy to difficult over the last 15 years.  I haven't done the more extreme trails but it's looking like few people would want to run those trails.  I'm happy to offer to be a trail leader if people want.

FWIW, I did Hell's Revenge (6 out of 10 on their scale) in an XJ on 3.5" lift and 32" tires.   Just TrueTracs front and rear.  I did bypass the harder lines but had zero trouble.

If people are interested, I can spot them up Hell's gate.  It's a fun side trail on Hell's Revenge and a good opportunity to get good video.

That would be nice :L:. I'm up for most anything up to about a level 4 trail with the MJ. I enjoyed some tougher stuff with the YJ and TJ but it. I was thinking it would be nice to have a meet and greet and maybe 3 days of trails or so.

I agree, that seems like a great timeline

Perfect! I’m only on 31s with an LSD rear in my MJ, but I’m willing to use rock sliders a little bit. If we end up doing more aggressive trails, I’d be just as happy parking my truck and jumping in with someone else too.

I'll encourage people to push their comfort level on trails.  You'll be surprised what you and your Jeep can do.

But when it comes down to it, you shouldn't feel that you're being pushed beyond your personal limits.

The slickrock out there got its name when the pioneers in wagons with steel rimmed wheels were trying to get through.  The steel would just slide all over the hard rock.  But it's basically petrified sand dunes and it gives great traction to rubber tires.  Imagine rock covered in sandpaper.  It's very grippy and you can climb things that you wouldn't think you can.

One thing I have wanted to do is to run the Rimrocker Trail.  It goes from Montrose, CO to Moab.  It's typically a 2 day trip with camping overnight.  Very scenic but not really a hard trail.

https://rimrockertrail.org/

It would be a fun trail to run on the way to the meetup.

It's closed due to snow starting mid to late fall and doesn't open until the spring.

But is that something people would be interested in with this gathering?

It’s completely the wrong direction from where I’ll be coming from, but I’d be game.

Fall would work better for me. I will be pushing it to even have my MJ here in the springtime. I like the idea of this possibly becoming an annual thing.

YES!! YES!! Rimrocker has been on my list for years! I had the change to do it a long while back but it just didn’t work out. I’m down for this, but unfortunately my truck would’ve been perfect for this before its latest reincarnation.

You’ve got time to rereincarnate or unreincarnate the truck! Or of course, take the CJ

You could take the wagon! Call it an AMC trail ride showcase presented by Comanche Club. :jammin:

One thing you might want to consider is the possibility of forest fire smoke in the fall.  This has been the driest winter in the west and setting records every month.  If the next one is at all similar the west will be burning in the summer and fall.  Not my idea of a pleasant time.  Just a thought.  Like I said, the Spring is fabulous.

Good thought here. Right now I’m in a stage two fire ban and the smoke in the air is very much there already. It’s only March… :fistshake2:

Ok, I am going to keep the top post updated with trails we have explicitly mentioned wanting to do that way we can keep everything organized. Let's start suggesting trails.
