Best All-Terrain tires?

Recommended Posts

I'm planning to upgrade my tires to all-terrain 235/75/15s soon and am wanting to get some opinions on the best options.  I'd rather keep it as cheap as possible as I don't drive the truck much currently, and am not planning to take it off-road in any extreme conditions.

- The Cooper Discoverer tires seem like the best option.  I can buy them from Wal-mart for $105 per tire (Plus whatever installation fees wal-mart charges).  They've got pretty good reviews and they're relatively cheap.

- Wal-Mart also has Dextero DAT1 tires that ate $73/tire.  They're certainly the budget option, but I have no idea what the quality looks like.

- I've seen a lot of great reviews on the GoodYear Wranglers as well and they're not too expensive.

What's the best option for a set of AT tires, that won't empty the pockets?

I'm also hoping I can hang on to the current set of tires and resell them as they've got probably less than 500 miles on them.  That'll (hopefully) help offset the cost.

I ran some Coopers on my wifes KJ. They did fine. Never went offroad, just driving around town and dealing with snowstorms. Loads better than the Michelins we replaced. On my WJ I have the Falken AT3w and those have been great. I would stay away from off brands. You can also find some good deals hunting around. I just got some new tires from pepboys for my daily for dirt cheap because they are a last year model. Normally they are $140 and I got them for $70. My advice is to search through stores and just go by the size.

When you say you can find good deals by hunting around, are you suggesting calling local tire shops to see what they've got?  Or can you generally find those deals via their websites?

I've had a good experience with PepBoys when I've used them to put a set of tires on a car a few years ago.

Be careful with Walmart Coopers. They have less tread depth than true Cooper AT3s, which is why they're cheaper.

I have Cooper AT3 XLTs which I recommend.

Is there a quality difference as well?  Or just the difference in tread?  I did notice that the ones Wal-Mart sells are not the AT3s but I've still seen relatively good reviews from them.

Internet is your friend. Don't need to always call around  I always check craigslist, fb marketplace, eBay, discount, Walmart, pepboys, tire rack, tireeasy to name a few. I was surprised that pepboys had the cheapest price on my last set, they tend to be the highest but old stock is a bargain hunters friend. When I asked discount to match the price they wouldn't. You can also find used tires cheap just be sure to check the date stamp. I've scored good deals that way too. Tricky part on getting good deals is a lot of places won't mount them or they upcharge the f out of it. Les Schwab wanted to charge me 40 a tire last time. Went to a local tire shop and they charged me 25.

Well, I've been told that, but I just double checked and they do have the same tread depth. Hmm

It would help to know what your plans are for the tires. If you'll be doing 99% pavement and 1% gravel roads, there's probably nothing wrong with the tires you have now. If you plan on sinking it to the doorhandles in muskeg every weekend, you might be better off with something else, sure.

My daily driver is on the Grabber AT/X, at least in the summer. They've got me everywhere I've wanted to go and are decent mannered enough on the road, although they're louder than my studded winters. Honestly they're probably more aggressive than I actually need, probably costing me mpg as well, but I like the look. I also prefer them over the KO2s that I had before. That said, there are tons of AT's out there that are more suited to life on paved roads that would easily do what I need them to offroad. Heck, one of my MJs is on an older set of winters that came on my ZJ, and they've done way better than expected at getting me into places without pavement despite 2wd and an open diff.

Really happy with my Falken Wildpeak's.  Have run them on the MJ, an XJ and a Suburban.  Good road manners and great off road - at least in the terrain out her in the west.

The BFG K02's were great as long as I did not need to drive on wet roads where they were scary - had those on an XJ.

General grabber atx in 31" flavor on my daily mj.  Love them. Wouldnt hesitate to buy another set. Confident and stable handling for a 31" truck tire. Handles loads really well and has been able to walk out of all the off road situations I have put them in. My mj is not a wheeler by any means but does see the woods during firewood season.

Tuesday I am having cooper at3's put on my wj. The wj is a pavement princess and will probably never see anything worse than an Indiana gravel road. Currently it has cooper discover ht's (on it when it bought it)  they have good traction and road manners for a street tire too. Mine are dry rotting and need replaced.

I just put a set of mastercraft courser ax2s on my mj. Have em on my dodge too. I have mastercrafts on everything i have and love em.
Goodyear, Cooper snd mastercraft are the only American made tires left I think. All owned by goodyear.
