ExpatMJGuy
I'm new and I'm just getting started as I just bought my Comanche last weekend. I've delt with many XJs over the years and this is my first MJ and this is the first Pre 97 of either platform for about 15 years! I took these pictures and plan to do a manual hunt in the wiring diagram PDF but if anyone knows exactly what some of this stuff goes to I'd be really grateful as it would speed up my understanding greatly. I only have newer Cherokees to go off of as examples in person the rest I need to find online (like here!) Wires were hanging out the dash and I have no reverse lights, no turn signals, no intermittent wipers, So popped the bezel off and this is what I had only the gauge cluster was plugged in and semi working. It would be helpful if you guys with more experience can tell me where all these plugs go. I'm thinking things like flasher modules? Intermittent Relay modules? The actual service manual for the Jeep will be here in a few days. I'm hoping that helps even more!

ExpatMJGuy
In the 9th pic there is a cut wire coming out of the just below the vacuum line. When you refer to orange wires for lights are you referring to the instrument illumination of the switch? Auto TPS? Automatic transmission throttle position sensor? Were the options for buttons on the left bed (cargo) light and fog lights? I know on the XJ the rear wiper and defroster was somewhere. I wanna say on the right side. What button options were on the right? i have suspected I’m missing something as far as relays go. Any ideas on what the blue orange and red wired connector in the 4th pic? Orange wires with spots for bulbs are for the illumination of the switch tops/what the switch does. Yep auto tps, tells the tcm where the throttle is at. Trans and roll bar lights iirc go on the right of the column. And Yea clock connector
ghetdjc320
The 7th picture is a set of rca cables probably for an aftermarket sub or amplifier. I can confirm all the rest of the answers here are correct as well on the other wiring plugs.
ExpatMJGuy
You guys are really awesome and have really shortened a lot of my work. Honestly you open the dash for the first time and see what I saw in that first pic for the first time its real intimidating and I used to work at a Ford and Nissan dealership about 13 and 14 years ago. Especially with the amount of electrical gremlins I need to hunt at once. It's got to be really easy to upgrade these older models with Junk Yard parts. They are even easier than my newer Jeeps models with changes in harnesses based in trim packages. They really all do seem to have the same wiring harness. I'm surprised the connectors weren't at least taped up to the harness like when there are unused connectors in more modern vehicles. The modern manuals have come a long way too from the few sketches I've come across online.

ExpatMJGuy
You sir are a life saver! It's strange that electrical is alone! Did they not put the diagrams in the FSM? I ordered MR 277 but it's not here yet. If so, is there any other essential sub manuals I need to know of? Besides the FSM, I'm accustomed to driveline component manuals such as the engine, transmission, transfer case, maybe a body manual and that's it! When I've checked this problem off my list, the next diagrams I will be after will be the vacuum lines for the HVAC blend doors. And now that I get a better look at them, and know what I'm looking at the orange wires do look like they could hold some lightbulbs.
JMO413
Electrical is it's own book. You will need both books in the 277 too cover after 86. Don't ask me how I know. There are also multiple other subject specific manuals like you mentioned. Fuel injection has one along with engine, each specific trans and each transfer case. Etc. ExpatMJGuy
Hey everyone. Thanks to the electrical manual posted earlier I've fixed most of my electrical gremlins. As everyone can see in my first pic before I put the dash back together I'm tidying everything up, labeling for future reference and making sure the cluster is refreshed before I put the dash all back together. It's sprung a few wires that I'm still trying to find answers for. Pics 2-4 are to the right of the steering column. As identified earlier the orange and black are illumination wires but these 2 are strange. One is still orange and black but has a larger square connector. The other one is a single orange\black wire with a single blade. I saw above where someone mentioned the cigar lighter for the square one but the cigar lighter is violet and orange and there is no place on the plate for illumination. I'm wondering if maybe it's an ashtray light with a different size bulb? I don't see an ashtray light on my vehicle so it's sus. I also found two other unused connectors under the dash in pics 5 and 6. Not sure where to start with these.
