Most common interior color?

I'd say without doubt that the most common interior color in the XJ Cherokees was gray.  Not so sure on the MJs.  From my experience, it seems like there may be as many tan as gray.  And it seems like the other colors (red, burgundy, blue, black, etc) are more commonly seen than in the XJs.

I think charcoal was an easy sell neutral color for the 80’s as those colorful interiors of garnet, honey, light blue, Baltic blue and those other vibrant colors were going away. Hell you can see with today’s interiors that black, tan or a sand like color and various greys are vastly popular. I’d love to see a modern day garnet or cordovan interior but the closest we will get is the Ram Rebels with their red accents.

I would also agree that XJ is definitely mostly gray.  I've personally seen more tan than gray MJs but both are pretty darn common. 

 

I'm wondering if we see more of the other colors in MJs because there are so much fewer of them than XJs so it's more likely we will see the less common colors.  Statistically we would see more of the uncommon colors when there are less total to see.  Just a theory, no way to know for sure what the actual distribution numbers were.

A agree with the grey in the XJ. I think that either tan or grey would also be most common in the MJ. Grey seems to be the most common in 90-92 trucks.

Keep in mind that grey interiors in Jeeps weren't even a thing until 1988. Within that limitation, it's gotta be grey. The tan color of the year (and they changed it at least three times) is probably the next most common.

I have seen 3 mjs irl 2 tan one grey if that means anything

I pretty much only see tan or gray for both XJ’s and MJ’s. I’ve only ever seen colored interior XJ’s in a junkyard. 
 

The blue is my favorite in both vehicles. The first manche I looked at purchasing had blue interior and for that reason alone I wish I’d gotten it

I was curious and checked my sales brochures for what interior colors were offered.

 

1984- Almond, Slate Blue, Garnet, Nutmeg

1985- Almond, Slate Blue, Garnet, Honey

1986- Black, Blue, Garnet, Honey

1987- Black, Blue, Tan, Cordovan

1988- Charcoal, Navy, Tan, Cordovan

1990- Charcoal, Sand, Cordovan

The 4 1987-1992 MJs that have been through my ownership had gray interiors.  The 2 1986 MJs were both red interiors.

1989 switched out "Tan" for "Sand" which I'm fairly sure stayed the same until the 1997 refresh of the XJ. I have for sure seen multiple 96 XJs with Sand interiors.

 

Cordovan lasted at least until 1992, but was pretty damn rare by then. As far as I know, that's one of the unique option combos: the '92 Laredo models had, as an option, dual power leather seats that were different from the Limited ones. While I'm here, here's another unique interior: a 1988 Laredo is the only combination that you could get grey plaid seats and door panels in. Another one is 1987-1/2 XJ Limiteds with black leather.

 

Within the HO era I'd say it's probably a 74/24/2% split between Charcoal/Sand/Cordovan on both MJs and XJs. Personal experience, anyway. It's really sad what Chrysler did to the interiors of these things. Once the engine management system got into a good place, the interiors just got so damn boring. And I really don't think of the 97+ interior as an improvement in any way except electrical connectors.

 

@fiatslug87 - ever thought of adding an (original) exterior and interior color column to the registry spreadsheet? Would make for interesting data.

Good idea, I can look into it. I think a lot of the early build sheets are very sparse on that detail.

That's a great idea on the registry!  And, I agree about the interiors.  Unless you have a Country or other upscale trim, the interiors on the late model XJs are just blah.

I have to agree with fiat. Very little of the XJ and MJ build sheets tell what interiors they have. In order for us to get that info, the owners will need to provide a pic of the firewall VIN plate to where we can see the interior color code.
