It almost sounds like you're going out of your way to talk yourself into believing the truck is worth it.

I still say it's a $500 truck at best.  But if you are convinced you want to buy it, go ahead.

I agree. Also better this truck goes to someone who knows about them and cares about them then some rando who will overpay and end up crushing it in a few years

I do think that I am trying to believe the truck is worth it, that is why I posted it here, to try to help get talked out of it. If I would get a video of it running, along with more pictures (and pictures that are actually decent), and find out that it is a true metric ton, I could maybe justify $2,200. That said, given the pictures, it does look like a $500 truck, if it were not in the rust belt. For me, the 2 good things about this truck is that it is a metric ton (according to the ad), and that it doesn't look overly rusty (it still has bedsides).

In your honest opinion, what would a $3,000 truck look like?

I don't know how he knows it's a metric ton with the missing tailgate. I bought mine for 2,000 312k miles little rust horrible interior it ran and drove and it was a metric ton for some scale

Here is a picture of my blue truck when I got it. I paid $1,750 for it in 2018 (I think). The truck had a knocking 4.0, D35, the Peugeot, needed a drivers door, needed floors, had rust holes above the wheel arch, and needed metal work on both cab corners and rockers. I was offered $3,500 for it the day after I bought it. When comparing my blue truck when I first got it to this red one, this red one seems like it would be a fair buy at $2,000 because the body looks about as nice, and the blue truck had engine issues. My blue truck was also the only MJ I had ever seen in person, so they are pretty rare in my area.

Thanks, I am not sure either, unless he looked at the rear end and leaf springs. I have been using your truck as a guide, as you bought your truck recently, so it should reflect the current prices of these trucks. I am thinking, if this truck has a good interior, $2,000 might be an OK buy for it, not great, but not awful either. That said, I have my doubts that the interior is much good in it because of the mice. But I also had an AMC Eagle with an almost perfect interior that had mice to so :dunno:.

A $3,00 truck would be running, driving, stopping.  All the lights would work.  No serious rust.  Basically, it would have to pass a general safety inspection (in a state that has inspections).

Body panels would have to be straight.  Paint would be in decent shape, as would the interior.  Some minor surface rust on a few things would be acceptable but no major cancer or any signs of potential cancer.

I'd have higher standards for a 4x2 truck.  Better condition, lower miles, something to make up around $1,000 over a 4x4.

Reading this, I think we do have very similar standards. According to the ad, the guy does say that all of the lights work, but that's only checking one item off of your list. With this list in mind, I will agree that the truck I posted is not a $3,000 truck. I do think it might be closer to a $2,000 truck as is if it is not driveable, which it is not, and it checks the rest of the boxes on your list. Like I said before, if the truck has excessive rust or is 2wd, I would not want it even at $1,000.

Here is a link for every single Comanche for sale on Craigslist Cars and Trucks within 500 miles of me.

https://cincinnati.craigslist.org/cto/d/dayton-88-jeep-comanche-rust-free/7240837866.html

^that guy is clearly lying about some of his claims, I think of that truck as about $3,000 tops in WI.

https://fortwayne.craigslist.org/cto/d/fort-wayne-jeep-comanche-reliable-rusty/7227164613.html

^Seems decent, but is super rusty, that said this truck does run and drive, but I value a body with a little rust more than a perfect drive train.

https://kalamazoo.craigslist.org/cto/d/portage-1988-jeep-comanche-mj/7241234823.html

^ this truck needs to be painted again, is 2wd, and it probably is not rust free.

When you compare it to these trucks, I think that the truck would be a fair deal at $2,000, if it is not rusty. That's a big IF.

Let me ask another question, is it worth getting more pictures and details about the truck?

you lost me at mice

I will admit, that is very worrying, but I had mice issues in a previous car and they did cause any rust damage or chew any wires that we found, and that car had an engine swap and I drove that car around the yard, and the lights worked.

If it's an '87 as claimed the 8th VIN position indicates the Trim/Payload:

    1    Base
    9    XLS
    F    Custom, Metric Ton
    P    Pioneer, Std. Payload
    R    Pioneer, Metric Ton
    S    Chief, Std. Payload
    T    Laredo, Std. Payload
    U    Laredo, Metric Ton

the 4th position indicates engine:

    B    2.1L Turbo-Diesel I4 (128 Cu. In.)
    H    2.46L I4 1V (150 Cu. In.) Gasoline Domestic
    M    4.0L I-6
    W    2.8L V6 (171 Cu. In.)
    Y    2.46L I4 1V (150 Cu. In.) Gasoline Export

and 6&7th positions indicate Drive/Bed length

    63    4WD Comanche, 6Ft. Box
    64    2WD Comanche, 6Ft. Box
    65    4WD Comanche, 7Ft. Box
    66    2WD Comanche, 7Ft. Box

Whoa. Thank you. I still will likely try to at least get the VIN for the registry.

"NO RUST NO RUST NO RUST"  ...except for the rusted out floor pans in pic #8.

I think 2,000 is on the high side but it might be worth it. mine was marked 3,000 online as well. mine had mice and the lights didnt work as well they are both 87s so it seems like a pretty apples to apples comparison. I would give him a call try to find the vin and then maybe drive out and take a look because as cool wind said they always say no rust but you could maybe save it from the crusher

Yeah, that truck is a turd. “Never offroaded” either.

This one was bad too, but not as bad as the other.

This is what I am leaning towards one I replace the choke cables on both of the tractors and finish up the blue truck.

Too many unknowns to even estimate what it's worth.

But, for me, it's close enough to look into. I drove 4 hours to look at mine, not running but cranked, but there were photos of the intact floor pans in the ad.

Paid for it, drove 8 hours to pick it up...

I might have found a different truck to buy instead.

88 SWB, 4.0 5speed

Partially through an AX-15 swap

Not running, but did before fuel tank was removed to swap bed

Rust free bed included

Roll bar

Looks pretty original

Price is $1,000

I'm thinking of buying it because it has an AX-15 and a rust free bed and a roll bar (which would help with my little project, @Jesse J knows what I am talking about)

factory rollbar?  :brows:

I believe it is.

Here is a picture, it looks relatively well optioned. If I do decide to pick it up, the rollbar would get traced for its dimensions and then the dimensions would get posted here. As much as it pains me to say it while looking at this bed, I think this truck would need to become a year round driver for me, I just can't justify 2 nice trucks that I drive in the summer. But if I get it, I would consider swapping to a less-nice bed that way I wouldn't feel as bad.
