Finally got around to installing my headlight relay harness I bought quite some time ago. Did it more for the safety than brighter lights, which is good considering I really didn't notice a big difference. A little more so on high beams than low beams, but was a bit surprised. :dunno:

Yeah I ran a relay harness for a while on a really nice set of sealed bulbs and it just wasn’t cutting it for me. Went with morimoto projectors and haven’t looked back

Upgrading from the sealed beam to *insert choice of non-sealed headlight here* is the real winner as far as brightness/visibility goes. If your existing wiring is in good shape, you shouldn't see much difference in brightness with just the harness. If you DID see a large difference in brightness, you had a significant voltage drop somewhere in the system and you better be glad your truck hasn't already set itself on fire. The safety of not passing full current through the switch is the real point, and for those so inclined, the ability to run higher powered headlights depending on how beefy the harness is.

 

Of course, any diligent MJ owner should add the harness AND leave the sealed beams in the 80s where they belong. :thumbsup:

 

Now, in this pixie wrangler's opinion, the headlight system is just a good first step in the process of ensuring electrical safety - identifying any and all voltage drops, cleaning and sealing all electrical connections, and identifying any excessive current draws throughout the whole electrical system should be done. The headlights and blower motor are just the big ticket items that have destroyed some really nice trucks.

i deleted blower and heater all together good there. i just took out a headlight with a tree so that i might justify a full headlight relay wiring and lamp upgrades. :brows:

Currently working with @CoastChief on these(he offered to help). He's currently busy with life, making moldings and other top secret stuff. Supposedly my sister knows someone but I have not asked her yet. Trust me, I have some labels that should be reproduced too like the VIN barcode labels on the radiator support.

This completed all recommended ground upgrades per Cruiser's tips. Glad I finally finished them all, feel a lot more confident about the electrical now. :L:

Have not heard anything on the status of these other than they will happen. Coastchief is in the middle of life and will be replacing his head gasket on his truck.

I have searched high and low, and wish I could find glass 7 inch rectangular housings with interchangeable bulbs, say an H4 style.  I've done this upgrade with 7 inch round lights on my Austin Healey, with some excellent LED h4 bulbs and couldn't be happier.  Way lower power draw and still very classy looking.   It seems all the rectangular led upgrades look like some alien eyeball.

Update..........after driving more at night and on some very dark back roads, I will say they seem a decent bit brighter, definitely on high beams. Still happy with doing it just for the prevention of the switch melting, but happy to get some more light out of them too. Eventually I'll probably put in some Hellas with a little more juice in the bulb but for now, a great upgrade for less than $20.
