I have a 2001 jeep wrangler ax15 and np231 going into a 1987 jeep comanche 2 wheel drive Peugeot..will I have to reclock the np 231 if I plan on a 4 inch lift

if you're talking about putting the wrangler stuff into the MJ, yes, the wrangler t-case will be clocked up a bit, but no you won't have to redrill if you don't want to.  I've got a wrangler AX15/231 in mine and it cleared barely but it cleared and now I get the benefit of extra ground clearance. :D   a few guys needed to hit the floorboards with a big hammer, but even then it's nothing crazy.   

 

you will want to source yourself an XJ/MJ AX-15 crossmember and shifter plus shifter tower.  :L:  I've got the TJ shifter in mine and it's doable, but the bends put it right up at the dash in 1st/3rd.

Didn't the 2001 Wrangler have the 3500 transmission?

 

It should be an NV3550.  Just as good as the AX-15, more or less.

NV3550 was 00-04 and was replaced by the NSG370. AX15 was in the TJ from 97-99. The NV3550 is really no better or worse but does have a slightly lower 1st gear. Good tranny

The OP said he has an AX-15 out of a 2001 Wrangler. That combination didn't exist from the factory.

 

As to whether the NV3550 is better than the AX-15 -- I have an AX-15 in an MJ, and my 2000 XJ has the 3550. The 3550 is hands-down the better transmission, by far. There's no comparison. It's stronger, quieter, shifts smoother, and has better gear ratios.

I'm glad you enjoyed you enjoyed your nv3550. It’s not a bad tranny at all but history has shown it is about the same as the ax15. It is not an upgrade imho. And consider that your ax15 is quite an older version. The ax15 is still in production for a reason

Since it is a 19 year old Tj.....maybe it is an Ax15.....OP never said it was OE....just said the Ax15 came out of a 2001 wrangler......I know around here nobody ever mods a jeep....but I hear there are places that they do............

Thanks for the replies..I'm new to mj and the world..I have a ch 7 with an ls1 and Dana 60's..I have had much eye on the comanche I finally bought for 21 years..the guy just wouldn't let it go.its very clean with 70 thousand miles..but its 2 wheel drive n that I must change. I have sourced 3 xj's for part but all automatics..I'm determined to keep the comanche a manual. The ax15 i mentioned could very well be a nv 3550..i have yet to take the drive to purchase it yet..this weekend..its already out n on a skid..I was told it was out of a 2000 to 2004 wrangler..the pictures are very good and its clean with only 50 thousand miles on it..it was part of someone's else's project that never happened..what's a fair price?.I will have to source a shifter n I have a long arm kit with a new crossmember already..any comments are welcome. Thanks

Since it's out of a project, it could be either the AX15 or NV3550.  Either would be a great option.  But get information on what it came from so you know what you need for things like rebuild parts and so forth.

I can't recommend a good price.  Being on a pallet ready to go adds value to me because it's less work.  But being on a pallet, there's no way to know anything about the donor for sure.  It might have 270K miles on it for all you know.  What are they asking for it?

I realize its s gamble..I was told it had 70 thousand miles on it..it looks really clean..it belonged to the brother of the guy I'm talking to. Unfortunately he passed away. The guy really doesn't know cars..he just going on what he was told it came out of..500 bucks..everything but the shifter..no fly wheel but the clutch is still on the input shaft. Its got the belhousing and external slave still.u can tell it's not been pressure washed..its just normal clean taken care of..thanks guys..let me know..going tomorrow to look in person..does the nv series have a identity tag n if so where is it located

Well I bought it for 500 dollars..it's definitely a nv 3550..10 spline input..the shifter was in it also..I got the flywheel clutch n throw out bearing and fork is still on it. My question would be what year did they have the vibration damper on the tail shaft..some what like a liberty or newer version np231

The vibration damper weight was a Libertine thing. Not used on the Cherokee, and AFAIK not used on the Wrangler.

I'm looking for info or things to look out for when installing this 2000 nv3550 transmission with a np231 that has a vibration damper on the tail shaft 

 

Any info will be appreciated
