Vandenborg1
So I have an 88 mj with a ba10/ I want to convert it to 4x4. I'm trying to find out my best option here. I've spent hours looking for donors and everything i find is auto. i want to stick with the manual, and what I've read says i can take an ax15 out of a dakota change out the bell housing and the t-case from the dakota will work is this wrong? Is there anything else I would need besides the obvious/crossmember?
Eagle
You can't find a 5-speed Cherokee 4.0L in 4WD anywhere?
Pete M
far as I know, the ax-15 was only 2wd in 4banger Dakotas. were they a 4wd option in v6 dakotas?
trinity5007
I believe they were in the 4x4 dakotas too.
Pete M
I know the v6 had a 4wd option, but was it an AX-15? I was thinking it was a nv3500 or something along those lines.
Vandenborg1
So now I've found a nv3550 out of a cherokee and an np231 down to the hunt for some axles thinking 8.25 trying to find a donor so I can steal some brackets etc

Dakotas with the 6 cyl and the 318. both had AX15s 2wd and 4wd but in my experience most of the 318s came with the 3500.

Vandenborg1
Ok so I have put the engine and Transmission in nv3550 and the rebuilt original 4.0 but I'm having an issue with the Trans mount am I missing a peice? Mount has 2 bolt holes Trans has 4? Also I think I have to pull it out anyway if anyone can confirm I'd appreciate it I swapped the flywheel that went with the new trans from an 00/01 cherokee. I read something saying the cops read the old flywheel differently?
rylee144
You need a transmission mount bracket.

87MJTIM
Transmission mount for an AX15. For the flywheel, it must match the ECU with the engine: Renix vs HO
Vandenborg1
That's what I thought I had found about the flywheel while looking for the mount info so thank you for confirming I emailed advanced adapters the say they have a peice to change the ba10 mount for the ax15 or the nv3550 but I'm still waiting for them to confirm it
Vandenborg1
So I've put the project on hold for while and I'm starting to get back into it. I've been doing some reading through the forums trying to find what route to go with a lift kit. everyone says stay away from rough country cool I can do that. I've looked at the rustys kit currently the sua is out of stock they have the soa available thoughts on this they say its a 4.5 but from what I've seen just the soa is closer to 6? I've also read on piecing one together long arm vs short arm ect what's everyone's thoughts?
Pete M
SOA lifts will vary depending on the shape of your leaf springs. it lifts 5.5-6.5 above what it is now, but if they are saggy or 2wd, you'll need less than that up front to match. omega_rugal
only the 4 cylinder dakotas had the AX15, and all were 4x2, you still need the tranfer case AND the bellhousing for the 4.0 so whats the point? the only good thing that may come out of going that route is that the 2.5l is very underpowered So the ax15 is likely to be in good shape
Warren99
Not sure if yall are passed this or not but I got my AX15 and NP231 from a 92 YJ. The bell housing was exactly the same, I think the YJ actually had like a 4.2 in it also. The 4wd shifter for the YJ is different, so either do what I did and use that and the YJ shift boot, or find a XJ/MJ with a 4wd AX15.
Vandenborg1
Down to lift kits I've looked at a couple long arm kits mainly from iro and rustys any opinions on them would be appreciated

rylee144
i don't believe that will work. It took some doing but i looked across the country on FB marketplace for XJ 5 speed part outs. i found a couple then got super lucky and got one from a member on here instead. dante2
Pretty pricey but if you need it sometimes you have to bite the bullet. https://www.ebay.com/itm/114980130788?hash=item1ac5598fe4:g:sY4AAOSwHVFhOkAT
