How rare arr the tilt columns? Just wondering if it is something I should invest time in to get from the junkyard before the truck is crushed or should I just leave it for someone else

It's just a GM Saginaw steering column, nothing special about them really except that from '91-94 they had Chrysler key cylinders in them. You may want to grab it if it's in a non-grey color you like. Other colors are sometimes hard to find but grey ones are everywhere. Took me a while to find a black one:

It is in gray, so ill just leave it. But what about the chrome levers for the tilt and the wiper speed selector?

I don't like tilt Saginaw columns. They always get loosy goosy over time, which at least requires a surgery tear down and tightening of the tilt mechanism, if your lucky. Unless you have multiple drivers that really need this optional feature, it's an unnecessary point of failure to me. ~2" of up/down column movement I don't need.

The chrome tilt lever and multifunction stalk switch from any pre-airbag GM Saginaw are PnP for our MJ columns.

Manual or auto column?  Auto tilt columns are fairly easy to find.  Manuals are a different ball game.  Auto XJs outnumber manual trucks by a significant margin.

is there a difference between the columns assuming both a floor shift?

I actually forgot my truck has a tilt steering column.  I had to fix it 7 or 8 years ago, since then I have never changed the position.  So, for me, it is useless.

I would assume it has to do with that little lever you have to depress when you want to take the key out.

I've got another column up in the attic that has the Chrysler lock cylinder in it. Anyone know if I can mix and match locks between that and the older GM-keyed ones?

You're right, i completely forgot about that. Oh well, I won't miss it. My dakota doesn't have one so neither will my jeep :P

both my MJ's have tilt.  One is crap though and PO took it apart and left all the parts in a plastic bag. Gonna toss it and replace it with one out of a donor XJ with floor shift.

I love my tilt column and I believe it was worth the work swapping it in. The column I bought also had intermittent wipers, which was something else I wanted. Subjective, like everything else.

My tilt column doesn't ever get adjusted, because it's where I want it to be. All of the vehicles I've driven without a tilt column always have the wheel in a less than optimal position, which goes from awkward to aggravating, and generally involves a ton of bus-driver. I imagine it would be the same for an XJ/MJ. I'm happy to have my tilt column.

The non-tilt position isn't horrible, but yeah it's definitely a bit bus driver-ish for me. Mine is normally a notch down from where it would be on a non-tilt column.
