Recommended Posts

hi all, i recently was give a 1990 Jeep Comanche straight 6 with smooth running engine the only issue is the pretty much the whole underside frame is rusted through. As i am new to the structural side of Vehicles i am in need of a little advice on where to start i don't want to feel like i am wasting my time with this but i really want to bring this vehicle back to road worth life, with some minor modern tweaks.

please with many thanks HELP haha

that's pretty bad, it looks like that the front leaf mount has almost completely rusted away, i'm going to say your best bet is to find a rust free shell then transfer the drivetrain over. that is unless you're really handy with a grinder and a welder.

Do not drive that truck on the road ever again. One of your leaf springs is almost ready to make a break for it, and when (not if) it does, you'll kill or maim someone. The uniframe looks like it's about ready to break in half anyway. That thing is a deathtrap. It's too far gone to even think about repairing.

Thats the kind of Comanche that I am looking for to put at my deer lease and never leave. Buy it for next to nothing to keep it from going to the scrap and let it live the rest of its life on the lease getting me to the deer stand and back until I come out to it one morning and its folded like a taco...

I could fix that.

But I wouldn't.  That cab has a lot more rust that has been bondo'd over.  I bet if you took it to a blaster there wouldn't be much left.  Now if somebody wanted to make a truggy, it would be a sorta good starting point.  Basically short of doing something that involves cutting off and trashing everything from the bump in the cab/doors and below, then rebuilding with tube, it is not worth anything other than to part it out.

Yeah...no.  I can see why it was given to you.  It would cost you way more than it will ever be worth just to get it safe.  If I had that in my yard I'd make a nostalgic ivy planter out of it and even then, likely not.

That truck must have spent it life near OC, MD or the PO parked it in the water.

You should search for another MJ to transplant the drive train in to.  (Although, every MJ available is probably suffering the same issues.)

You could make back some $ by parting it out.  It looks like a factory bumper.  Tail lights are needed by other MJs.  Other parts: leaf springs, tail gate, fuel sending unit, etc.

(Where in MD?)
